A good white button-down should suit the way you wear it, stay opaque enough for your comfort, and fit without pulling or gaping. Good Housekeeping’s 2026 comparison is the strongest documented test basis here: analyst Amanda Constantine says the team researched more than 50 styles and selected 14 to test for fit and wear, opacity, wrinkle resistance, and shrinkage. The evidence available supports a useful shortlist and buying framework, but not a verified ranking of nine shirts or claims that this publication tested them.
What the documented testing can—and cannot—tell you
Good Housekeeping’s August 7, 2026 article names The Shirt’s Jet Set Boyfriend Shirt as best overall, with Old Navy’s Oversized Button-Down Boyfriend Shirt as best value, Frank & Eileen’s Relaxed Button-Up Shirt as its laid-back pick, and Express’s Stretch Cotton Poplin Oversized Shirt as a deal pick. These are Good Housekeeping recommendations, not independent tests by this publication; product stock and recommendations can change. Read the Good Housekeeping comparison and its full list of picks.
Constantine describes testing fit by trying the shirts on and wearing them out, opacity by placing them on a black mannequin in the lab, and wrinkle resistance and shrinkage by laundering according to care labels. That makes the comparison more informative than a product-photo roundup, but it does not establish that every shirt suits every body, wardrobe, or laundering routine.
How to choose a white shirt that works for you
Check opacity in the fabric, not just the photo
White fabric can range from nearly opaque to visibly sheer. Product images and words such as “poplin” do not guarantee how much a specific shirt conceals. Consider what you plan to wear underneath and whether you are comfortable with the fabric’s transparency. Good Housekeeping’s black-mannequin comparison offers one way to assess it; its finding reflects that test setup, not every lighting condition.

#1 Best Overall
Assess fit at the shoulders, bust, and hem
A label such as “relaxed” or “oversized” does not tell you whether a shirt will pull at the chest, fall at the right point, or tuck smoothly. Check shoulder placement, body volume, and length against how you intend to wear it. If buttons gape at the bust, a placket with an extra hidden button may help; it is worth checking the garment details rather than assuming every shirt includes one.
Good Housekeeping’s analyst describes the desired balance as “not too sheer but not too thick, not too boxy but not too formfitting, not too crisp but not too flowy.” Use that as a prompt to decide which trade-off matters most to you, rather than as a universal fit standard.

Match fabric and care to your routine
Fiber, fabric weight, and finish affect how a shirt feels and behaves. Cotton poplin is one option for a more structured shirt; a washed cotton shirt may feel softer and lighter, according to customer impressions reported on J.Crew’s product page. Those impressions are not controlled tests. Wrinkles and shrinkage also depend on care and garment construction, so follow the label and look for testing that describes its laundering method.
Use garment measurements and length options
Compare listed garment measurements with a shirt you already like, especially if you are between sizes or want to wear the shirt untucked. Asket lists its women’s white Poplin Shirt as a relaxed straight fit and offers two lengths per size, along with garment measurements. Those are brand specifications, not independent fit results. Which option should you start with?
- For a tested recommendation: Start with Good Housekeeping’s named picks, then check the current product page for measurements, care, color, and stock.
- For a longer or more precisely measured fit: Asket publishes two length options per size and garment measurements.
- For a classic cotton-poplin description: J.Crew Factory lists a 100% cotton poplin shirt in Signature Fit; rely on its current size details rather than the rating alone.
- If bust gaping is your main concern: Prioritize shoulder and bust fit, and look for a hidden extra placket button. One reader phrased the concern as finding a shirt that “doesn’t gap at the chest”; that is a useful fit question, not evidence about how prevalent the issue is. Who What Wear’s 2025 shopping roundup also reflects common consumer use of “button-down” for shirts with a front closure.
Button-down or button-up?
Technically, “button-down” describes a shirt with small buttons fastening the collar to the shirt; “button-up” is the broader term for a shirt that closes down the front. Retailers and shoppers often use the terms less strictly, so search both when comparing products.
