There isn’t a defensible, apples-to-apples ranking of eight lunch containers in the available product information. Instead, this shortlist compares eight options by the job they’re designed to do—small divided portions, more capacity, stainless steel, hot-and-cold meals, or added cold-carrying support—so you can match a lunch box to your child’s appetite and routine.

Specifications below come from manufacturers or named editorial sources, not a uniform independent test. Capacities are published product figures, not standardized measures of usable food volume. Prices and current stock were not verified.

Compare the eight options at a glance

Model Best suited to Published capacity Key distinction
Bentgo Kids Smaller, divided lunches 2.4 cups (Bentgo specification, accessed 2026) Five compartments; removable tray
Bentgo Kids Snap & Go A larger lunch or appetite 4.2 cups (Bentgo specification, accessed 2026) Four clips and sealed compartments, per Bentgo
Bentgo Chill Lunches where a built-in ice pack is appealing Not stated in the cited source Built-in removable ice pack described by Bon Appétit
Yumbox Original Portioned foods in a divided tray Not stated in the cited source Six compartments and leakproof construction described by a secondary comparison
PlanetBox Rover Families considering stainless steel 5 cups (PlanetBox comparison page, accessed 2026) Five compartments; listed weight 1.6 lb
LunchBots Bento Cinco Families considering a stainless-steel bento Not stated in the cited sources Named in BabyGearLab’s review; verify exact model details
OmieBox A hot entrée with cold sides 47 oz box; 8.5 oz thermos (OmieLife specifications, accessed 2026) Built-in thermos compartment
PackIt Freezable Playtime Cold-carrying support alongside a separate food container Not stated in the cited source Freezable gel built into bag walls; it is a carrying bag, not a divided container

Which lunch box fits your child’s meal?

For smaller portions and several food types: Bentgo Kids

Bentgo lists its standard Kids model for ages 3–7, with five compartments and a 2.4-cup capacity. The tray is removable and, according to Bentgo, microwave- and dishwasher-safe; the company recommends hand washing the outer shell. This is a reasonable format to consider when you want separate small portions, but the listed age range and capacity are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that the box fits every child’s appetite.

See Bentgo Kids product details.

For a larger divided lunch: Bentgo Kids Snap & Go

Bentgo lists 4.2 cups of capacity for Snap & Go, compared with 2.4 cups for its standard Kids model. The company describes four clips and sealed compartments; it says the container is microwave-safe and the tray is top-rack dishwasher-safe. That makes it the larger-format option on this shortlist, though published capacity does not establish how much of a particular meal will fit comfortably.

For a built-in ice pack: Bentgo Chill

Bon Appétit describes Bentgo Chill as having a removable ice pack. The available information does not establish the model’s current official specifications or care instructions, so check the exact product listing before buying. An ice pack feature can support a cold-lunch setup, but a container’s presence alone does not demonstrate that perishable food will stay at a safe temperature.

Read Bon Appétit’s lunch-box guide.

For six separate portions: Yumbox Original

A secondary comparison describes Yumbox Original as a six-compartment, leakproof box with portion guidance. Those details are not confirmed here against the manufacturer’s current listing, so treat them as a starting point and verify the exact model and claim before relying on them—particularly if preventing spills is your main concern.

Omie OmieBox Kids Insulated Leakproof Bento Lunch Box with Food Jar (Pink Berry)
  • KIDS EAT BETTER — With OmieBox, you can pack more variety and keep their favorite foods at just the right temperature, so lunch is always something to look forward to. • EASIER, FASTER LUNCH PREP — No more scrambling to invent new room-temp meals. OmieBox lets you pack hot and cold foods side by side, so you can simply rotate the meals you know they’ll eat — like warm pasta and fresh fruit — without getting stuck in a sandwich rut. It keeps lunch exciting and makes hectic mornings a whole lot easier.
  • BUILT TO LAST & EASY TO MAINTAIN — Parents say it’s the only lunchbox that still looks new after a year of daily use. OmieBox is designed to last for years — and individual parts like seals and dividers are easily (and affordably) replaceable, so you don’t have to buy a whole new box.
  • A HIGH-QUALITY INVESTMENT — More than just a bento box, OmieBox is made from premium, food-safe materials that stand up to real kid life. It’s BPA- and Phthalate-free, weighs a sturdy 1.7 lbs., and features a removable 18/8 304 grade stainless steel vacuum insulated container to keep hot foods warm for hours.
  • EASY TO CLEAN — OmieBox comes apart for a thorough clean. The rubber seals are completely removable. If seals ever wear out, you can simply replace them — extending the life of your lunchbox and cutting down on waste.

See The Bento Kids comparison.

For a stainless-steel option: PlanetBox Rover

PlanetBox lists Rover as a five-compartment lunch box with a 5-cup capacity and a weight of 1.6 pounds. Its comparison page describes it for ages 3 and up; the product page warns that it has small parts and is not intended for children under 3. Confirm the precise set or variant, since included components can affect what you receive.

For another stainless-steel bento to investigate: LunchBots Bento Cinco

BabyGearLab names Bento Cinco among the models in its lunch-box review, updated January 2, 2025. LunchBots describes stainless steel and platinum silicone food-contact interiors across its product range, but that brand-level statement does not establish the materials or construction of every individual model. Check the exact Bento Cinco listing for its compartments, closure, care instructions, and current specification.

For a hot entrée and cold sides: OmieBox

OmieLife describes OmieBox as a children’s bento with a built-in thermos compartment. Its specifications list 47 ounces for the box and 8.5 ounces for the thermos. Those are product specifications, not independent heat-retention results. Check the manufacturer’s use and care instructions for the foods and setup you have in mind.

See OmieBox product details.

For a freezable carrying bag: PackIt Playtime

PackIt Freezable Playtime is not a divided lunch container: its gel is built into the bag walls, so it is best considered as carrying support for food held in a separate container. PackIt says to hand clean it, let it dry fully, and only then refreeze it. Don’t choose it as a substitute for a bento if you need built-in compartments.

Choose by capacity, temperature, and cleanup

  • Start with what your child eats. Use the meal and appetite as your guide, not the age label alone. Published cup capacities are useful for comparing manufacturer specifications, but they are not a standardized test of usable volume.
  • Decide whether you need compartments or temperature support. A divided tray separates foods; that feature by itself does not keep perishable food cold. For a hot entrée alongside cold sides, OmieBox has the distinct built-in thermos design in this shortlist.
  • Check how it will be washed. Bentgo says the Kids removable tray is dishwasher-safe but recommends hand washing the outer shell. PackIt says Playtime is not machine- or dishwasher-safe and needs to dry fully before refreezing. Verify the exact model’s instructions for other options.
  • Consider handling as well as material. Stainless steel may matter to your material preferences, but it does not answer questions about weight, closure, compartment sealing, or how easily your child can use the box. Try latches and zippers with your child where possible; there is no common age-specific opening test across these models in the cited information.

Pack perishable lunches with a cold source

USDA FSIS guidance for packed lunches gives two frozen gel packs, each at least 5 by 3 inches, or one such frozen gel pack combined with a frozen drink, as examples for keeping perishables cold. That is packing guidance, not a performance claim for any lunch box on this list. Follow current USDA advice and the food’s handling instructions when packing items that need refrigeration.

Read USDA FSIS guidance on packing a safe lunch.
