The Best Shoes for Foot Pain, According to Podiatrists: How to Choose

There is no one best shoe for all foot pain. Compare fit, toe-box room, support and sole design to your symptoms, foot mechanics and activity.

There is no single best shoe for every kind of foot pain. The right choice depends on where it hurts, your foot shape and mechanics, what you’ll use the shoes for, and any advice from your clinician. Start with fit, then compare toe-box room, heel security, cushioning, support and sole design. Treat named shoes as options to try—not proven treatments or universal podiatrist picks.

Start with fit, not a brand name

A shoe should match both your foot and your activity. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) recommends trying shoes on rather than relying on the size printed on the box. Check that the width feels right and that there is about half an inch between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. A shoe that is too long can let your foot slide, so sizing up is not a substitute for finding a better width. AAOS: Shoes—Finding the Right Fit

Feet can swell during the day. Cleveland Clinic podiatrist Joy Rowland, DPM, recommends getting measured later in the day and says, “Always get measured for a shoe.” Use the measurement as a starting point, then assess how the shoe actually feels on your foot. Cleveland Clinic: Foot Support—What to Look For When Buying Shoes

  • Toe-box shape and depth: Round or square shapes generally give toes more space than pointed shapes. A deeper toe box can help accommodate hammertoes.
  • Heel security: Look for a heel that holds your foot without slipping or rubbing.
  • Width and length: Choose a width that fits; extra length may allow your foot to slide forward.
  • Insole options: A removable insole can make room for a cushioned replacement or an orthotic.
  • Activity: A shoe that works for walking may not be the right choice for prolonged standing, work, or sport.

Match support to your foot mechanics

More support is not automatically better. The Arthritis Foundation distinguishes stability shoes, which may suit people who overpronate, from neutral shoes for people without that pattern. A motion-control shoe can be a poor match: orthopedic surgeon Jonathon Backus, MD, warns that “wearing a motion control shoe if you do not overpronate can cause lateral foot pain.” Arthritis Foundation: A Guide to the Best Shoes for Arthritis

Choose features for the location and cause of pain

Heel pain or plantar fasciopathy

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board’s NHS Wales leaflet recommends a well-fitting shoe with a robust sole and lace or strap fastening for plantar fasciopathy. It advises enough width and depth at the toes, a sturdy sole that holds its shape, and a small heel pitch no higher than 25 mm. The leaflet cautions against flat canvas shoes, flexible memory-foam-style soles, slip-ons, ballet pumps and high heels. These are patient-care recommendations, not proof that a particular shoe cures heel pain. NHS Wales: Plantar Fasciopathy Management Guide

It names the Brooks Adrenaline GTS, ASICS Kayano, New Balance 860, HOKA Arahi and Saucony Guide as options to consider. These are that guide’s recommendations, not a clinical consensus ranking. Arthritis or joint pain

For walking, podiatric surgeon Ami Sheth, DPM, told the Arthritis Foundation, “If you’re walking, you need stabilizing, cushioning features.” For prolonged standing, the organization recommends considering supportive cushioning, a roomy toe box and a rocker bottom to reduce pressure on the forefoot. It also notes that a stability shoe may help some people with joint conditions by taking weight off the ball of the foot—but the right construction depends on your mechanics.

For osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, the Australian Podiatry Association emphasizes accommodating changes in foot shape. Depending on the person, useful features may include a stable heel, room at the toes, soft or stretch uppers, secure fastening, and extra depth with minimal seams. A podiatrist can assess whether an off-the-shelf shoe or custom footwear and orthotics make sense. Avoid shoes that need to be broken in. Australian Podiatry Association: Arthritis

Bunions, hammertoes or pressure at the forefoot

When toes are crowded, prioritize a deep, round or square toe box and a width that fits. AAOS notes that narrow or pointed shoes can crowd toes, and that high heels with narrow toe boxes can contribute to bunions, hammertoes and corns. A roomier shape may reduce pressure, but it does not replace an assessment if pain or deformity is progressing.

Sandals

A sandal can still offer useful support, but flimsy or poorly fitting designs may aggravate arch, heel or forefoot problems. The Australian Podiatry Association identifies possible features such as arch support, cushioning, a slight heel pitch, a sturdy outsole, a heel counter, a comfortable upper and adjustable straps. Which features matter depends on your foot, activity and environment; not everyone needs maximum support. Australian Podiatry Association: How to Buy the Right Sandal

When to consider a rocker sole or orthotic

A rocker sole may help some people reduce pressure on the forefoot, but it is not a universal solution. AAOS advises consulting a clinician before investing in rocker shoes and cautions that they are not appropriate for people with balance difficulty or an unsteady gait.

For orthotics, check whether the shoe’s insole can be removed and whether the remaining space accommodates the insert without crowding your toes or lifting your heel out of the shoe. The NHS Wales plantar fasciopathy leaflet recommends introducing insole use gradually over a week and stopping if new pain or redness appears. Ask the clinician who recommended an orthotic how to use it and what fit to expect.

How to evaluate a shoe before you buy

  1. Identify the problem to solve. Note where the pain is, what activity brings it on and whether a clinician has identified a condition or a particular gait pattern.
  2. Try the shoe on with your usual socks. Check both feet, since they may differ in size or shape. Walk around and notice slipping, rubbing, pressure and toe room.
  3. Check the specific features you need. Prioritize toe-box depth and width for toe pressure; secure fastening and a robust sole for plantar fasciopathy; or a clinician-guided stability, neutral or rocker design where appropriate.
  4. Check accommodation. If you use an orthotic, see whether the insole is removable and whether the shoe still fits securely with it in place.
  5. Do not assume discomfort will resolve after break-in. The Australian Podiatry Association advises against buying shoes that require breaking in, particularly when foot shape or arthritis is a concern.
  6. Reassess if symptoms change. A shoe that once fitted well may no longer suit a changing foot or a different activity.

What about the HOKA Bondi 9?

The Michigan podiatrist-reviewed guide includes HOKA Bondi 9 listings and names the Bondi line among options. That makes the Bondi 9 one cushioned shoe to compare—not “the best shoe for foot pain” or a proven treatment. Check the current listing, version, available widths and fit, and judge it against your own needs rather than its name or category.

When shoe shopping is not enough

Shoes may improve comfort and fit, but they cannot establish the cause of pain. Seek an individualized clinical assessment for persistent or severe pain, a changing foot shape, numbness or difficulty walking. If a clinician has already given you footwear or orthotic advice, use that as the starting point for your selection.
