Why wear shoes in shared showers?
Athlete’s foot can spread through damp shared surfaces, including showers, pools, and locker-room floors, according to MedlinePlus. The CDC recommends sandals in locker rooms and showers as part of its ringworm-prevention guidance, and says ringworm can spread through contaminated surfaces such as locker-room floors (CDC: Ringworm Prevention; CDC: What Causes Ringworm).
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises: “Wear shower shoes, flip-flops, or sandals when walking around pools, gyms, shower or locker areas, and hotel rooms.” The AAD also recommends keeping feet clean and dry. Footwear is one practical precaution, not a guarantee against infection.
What to look for in shower shoes
Compare pairs on practical features rather than assuming a particular material or construction is best. The health guidance cited above recommends footwear but does not compare designs, materials, grip, or durability.

What the available guidance can—and cannot—tell you
CDC, AAD, and MedlinePlus guidance supports wearing footwear in relevant shared wet areas and keeping feet clean and dry. It does not identify a best shower shoe, test specific models, rank materials, or provide a percentage reduction in infection risk. There is therefore no evidence-based basis here to name a best overall pair or claim that rubber, plastic, drainage holes, or any other design feature is universally superior.
