The July 29, 2025 Roku promotion listed three devices at $19, $29 and $79—not “starting at $20,” as the headline rounded it. Those prices were temporary and are historical. Match the player to your television: the HD stick suits a 1080p set, the Streaming Stick Plus is the value choice for most 4K televisions, and the Ultra is for buyers who want Ethernet, premium picture formats and the most capable remote.
For context, Roku’s product pages showed different limited-time prices on August 18, 2026: $29.99 for the Streaming Stick, $39.99 for the Streaming Stick Plus and $99.99 for the Ultra. Do not treat those later prices as the 2025 promotion.
What the 2025 Roku deals included
| Model | 2025 deal price | Listed regular price | Claimed discount | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Roku Streaming Stick HD | $19 | $29.99 | 37% | Older or smaller 1080p TVs |
| Roku Streaming Stick Plus | $29 | $39.99 | 27% | Affordable 4K streaming and travel |
| Roku Ultra | $79 | $99.99 | 21% | Fast performance and home theater features |
The promotion was described as a back-to-school sale and directed shoppers to retailers including Amazon, Walmart and Target. Inventory, retailer terms and prices could change. See the July 29, 2025 deal article for the original listing.
Which Roku was the best buy?
Best value for most 4K TVs: Streaming Stick Plus
At $29, the Streaming Stick Plus was the strongest balance of price, 4K output, compact size and simple setup. Roku lists support for 4K, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG. It uses Wi-Fi and is designed to draw power from the television, making it convenient for travel. It does not list Dolby Vision, Ethernet or USB playback, so it is not a substitute for the Ultra in a home theater.

Confirm the bundle’s exact remote: Roku’s current page lists a voice remote with TV controls and Bluetooth Headphone Mode, while retailer bundles can differ.
Cheapest option for an HD set: Streaming Stick HD
The $19 Streaming Stick HD was the lowest-cost offer and is adequate for a television whose maximum resolution is 1080p. Roku lists HD output up to 1080p, dual-band Wi-Fi, a built-in HDMI connector, USB-C power and a voice remote with power, volume and mute controls. Buying it for a 4K television will not produce a 4K picture.
Rank #2
- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
Best premium choice: Roku Ultra
The $79 Ultra added features that explain its higher price: 4K, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos passthrough, Wi-Fi 6, 10/100 Ethernet, USB 3.0 and HDMI 2.1b. Its second-generation Voice Remote Pro has backlit buttons, a rechargeable battery, hands-free voice control, a lost-remote finder and direct Bluetooth headphone listening. Roku says the Ultra is 30% faster than other Roku players; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independent benchmark.
Quick decision guide
- Your TV is 1080p only: choose the Streaming Stick HD unless you expect to replace the television with a 4K model soon.
- Your TV supports 4K: choose the Streaming Stick Plus for compact value and the Ultra if you need Dolby Vision, Ethernet, USB or the premium remote.
- Your Wi-Fi is unreliable: the Ultra’s Ethernet port may solve the problem more effectively than buying a faster Wi-Fi-only stick.
- Your built-in TV software is fast and supported: you may not need an external Roku at all.
Picture, sound and connection requirements
| Model | Maximum picture support | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Streaming Stick HD | 1080p HD | No 4K |
| Streaming Stick Plus | 4K; HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG | Dolby Vision is not listed on the current product page; Wi-Fi only |
| Roku Ultra | 4K; HDR10+, Dolby Vision; Dolby Atmos passthrough | Compatible TV, content, cables and audio equipment required |
All players need an available HDMI input and internet access. Some older 4K televisions lack HDMI/HDCP 2.2 support, which can prevent 4K playback. HDR, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos also depend on compatible content and equipment. Roku’s specifications are on the Streaming Stick, Streaming Stick Plus and Ultra pages.

- 4K picture quality: With Roku Streaming Stick Plus, watch your favorites with brilliant 4K picture and vivid HDR color.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
Power and portability
The Streaming Stick and Streaming Stick Plus plug directly into the TV and are intended to use the TV’s power, reducing cable clutter. USB output varies by television; if the stick reports insufficient power or restarts, use the included power cable and wall adapter. The Ultra uses a dedicated power adapter.
The sticks are the practical travel choices because they are small. Hotel Wi-Fi may require a browser sign-in or network authorization, which can complicate setup even when the device itself is compatible.

Do you need an external Roku?
A Roku is optional when your television’s built-in system is responsive, receives needed apps and remains supported. It can still be worthwhile when the TV is slow, has poor app support, receives fewer updates or has an interface you dislike. Roku TVs already include the platform; an external player lets you replace the streaming hardware without replacing a satisfactory screen. Roku’s Roku TV information explains compatibility and content availability.

Prices observed after the 2025 sale
On August 18, 2026, Roku’s official pages displayed the Streaming Stick at $29.99 (reduced from $39.99), the Streaming Stick Plus at $39.99 (reduced from $59.99) and the Ultra at $99.99 (reduced from $149.99). Roku marked these offers as limited-time and subject to stock. Verify the live price, seller and terms before purchasing.
Deal-check checklist
- Confirm the exact model name and model number; a generic “Roku Stick” title may describe an older device.
- Check HD versus 4K output and the included remote version.
- Verify that the item is new rather than refurbished.
- Check the seller, shipping charge, delivery date and return policy.
- Look for coupon, membership or checkout requirements.
- Confirm stock and whether the offer is a temporary promotion.
- For 4K, check your TV’s HDMI/HDCP capability and your network performance.
The Bottom Line
The 2025 $19 Streaming Stick HD was the cheapest deal, but the $29 Streaming Stick Plus was the better value for most 4K-TV owners. Pay more for the $79 Ultra only when Ethernet, Dolby Vision, USB, faster hardware or its rechargeable backlit remote matter to you.
