Lore raises $1.1 million to build a fandom-focused search engine for internet rabbit holes

Lore wants to turn fandom rabbit holes into a personalized search and discovery experience. Its $1.1 million pre-seed round is confirmed, but the product’s public availability, technology and long-term traction remain unclear.

Lore is a fandom-focused search and discovery startup founded by Zehra Naqvi. It reportedly raised a $1.1 million pre-seed round led by Village Global, with participation from Precursor Ventures, to develop a way for fans to connect theories, context, Easter eggs and related discoveries across the fragmented web. The company’s vision is clearer than its publicly demonstrated product: the cited October 3, 2025 coverage did not include screenshots, technical specifications or an independently reviewed public launch.

What Lore says it is building

Lore is described as a search and discovery layer for fandom culture, not simply another social network or a general-purpose answer engine. Its proposed experience combines five activities that are usually split among different services:

  • Search: finding relevant pages, videos, posts and reference material.
  • Discovery: surfacing adjacent theories, historical context, interpretations and connections a user did not explicitly request.
  • Personalization: remembering or mapping interests over time.
  • Community: preserving the conversation and disagreement that make fandoms useful.
  • Curation: organizing a coherent path through scattered material.

Reported plans included a personalized graph of a user’s interests, links between fandom topics, a feed of fandom and “stan” updates, monthly reports about changing interests, and controls to zoom in on one theory or zoom out to see links among different fandoms. These are stated or planned capabilities, not independently verified features. The report did not explain how much of the system would be algorithmic, editorial, user-generated or AI-generated.

The company was expected to emerge from stealth on October 6, 2025, with a broader launch discussed for the following year. The cited reporting does not establish that Lore had become publicly available by August 18, 2026, so readers should look for a current first-party signup or product page rather than assume access.

Why fandom might need another layer

Fandom research is distributed across social networks, forums, wikis, video platforms, newsletters and conventional search. A fan can find an isolated clue yet lose the surrounding thread when a post disappears from a feed, a page changes or a conversation moves to another platform.

Naqvi has described spending hundreds of hours researching Marvel films without a persistent system recording what she had learned or how one discovery connected to another. That problem is practical, not merely nostalgic:

  • Interesting discoveries vanish into chronological feeds.
  • Search engines often optimize for a direct answer instead of a productive detour.
  • Fan theories and interpretations are separated from the scenes, interviews or historical context that prompted them.
  • Canon, rumor, speculation and personal interpretation are frequently mixed together.
  • People who prefer to lurk may want to explore without posting, building a following or performing an identity publicly.
  • Older or busier fans may want a structured way to return to a hobby rather than reconstructing it from browser history.

A useful product would therefore need to preserve provenance and disagreement while making exploration easier. A colorful graph alone would not solve the problem.

Who founded Lore?

Zehra Naqvi is the company’s solo founder. The reported background combines consumer investing at Headline Ventures, a Columbia art-history degree, newsletter writing and long participation in online fandoms. She reportedly built an audience of about 250,000 followers across Tumblr and Twitter while following Marvel and One Direction fandoms.

That history explains the product motivation, but it is not evidence that Lore’s search, recommendations or moderation work at scale. At the time of the funding report, the company had hired an engineer and a marketing executive.

What is confirmed about the company

Item What the public report establishes
Funding $1.1 million in pre-seed funding, reported October 3, 2025
Investors Village Global led the round; Precursor Ventures participated
Founder Zehra Naqvi, described as a solo founder
Early experiment More than 1,000 logins, nearly 24,000 searches and about eight cumulative days, or roughly 200 hours, of usage
Technical details Not disclosed in the cited coverage
Public availability Not established by the cited coverage; verify a current first-party access page

The funding and product description were reported by TechCrunch. Village Global also posted about backing Lore on LinkedIn, and Naqvi introduced the company in a public post.

What the early usage numbers do—and do not—show

More than 1,000 logins, almost 24,000 searches and approximately 200 cumulative hours indicate activity among early testers. They do not, by themselves, establish product-market fit.

The meaningful questions are unanswered in the cited account:

  • How many unique people produced the logins?
  • Over what period did the searches occur?
  • Were testers recruited from Naqvi’s existing audience?
  • How many returned after their first session?
  • How often did searches produce useful, correctly sourced results?
  • Were searches mainly navigational, informational or exploratory?
  • Did users create and revisit multiple fandom graphs?
  • Were incentives involved, and were the figures independently audited?

Those details would distinguish durable demand from an enthusiastic early cohort trying a novel experiment.

Lore versus Perplexity, Reddit and reference sites

Lore’s proposed distinction is primarily about experience design. Perplexity is an established general-purpose AI search product built around direct, cited responses and follow-up research. Its official materials describe free and paid plans, including Pro features; the company’s pages have displayed different annual-price presentations, so pricing should be checked at the time of purchase. See the product overview, Pro page and plan comparison.

Service Primary job Discovery and memory Community and source character
Lore (proposed) Explore cultural obsessions and connected rabbit holes Personal interest graph, pathways and reports are planned Fandom-first, potentially lurker-oriented; implementation and sourcing remain unverified
Perplexity Answer questions and conduct cited research Threads and research organization, not a demonstrated fandom graph Broad audience; source-backed answers rather than a dedicated fan community
Reddit Discussion, theories, reactions and niche expertise Community history is fragmented across subreddits and search Strong first-person knowledge; quality and moderation vary
Wikipedia Reference information, timelines and production context Structured links among subjects Encyclopedic standards; limited room for informal theory and live debate
Fandom wikis Franchise-specific databases Character, episode, item and location organization Fan-maintained reference material; usually weak for cross-fandom personal mapping
Search engines and bookmarks Find and save individual pages User-managed tabs, folders and history No unified fandom context or community layer

Reddit, Wikipedia, Fandom, YouTube, TikTok, Tumblr and Discord already perform parts of this job. Lore would have to make the organizing layer materially better than combining those services with bookmarks and an AI search tool. No public comparison demonstrates that it currently does.

“Lurker-first” is a promise, not a proven advantage

Naqvi has described Lore as “lurker-first”: interactive and colorful without requiring users to post constantly or cultivate a public identity. The idea could appeal to fans who want to save, follow or privately map discoveries.

Before that promise can be evaluated, users need clear answers about whether graphs are private, public or shareable; whether accounts are required; how spoilers are controlled; and whether personalization becomes another engagement-maximizing feed. Moderation also matters. Fandom products must handle harassment, brigading, misinformation and disputes over ships, characters and canon even when users are not posting frequently.

The hard product questions

Canon, theory and provenance

A fandom search engine must label the difference between an official fact, a creator interview, a journalist’s report, a fan theory, a rumor and an interpretation. It should show where each claim came from, when it was published and which franchise, episode or character it concerns. A confident summary without that provenance would make the rabbit hole less trustworthy.

Spoilers

Spoiler controls need to work across linked articles, videos, images, social posts and search snippets. A single hidden paragraph is not enough if a recommendation card reveals a late-season event.

Privacy

A personal obsession graph could expose sensitive interests involving politics, sexuality, religion, celebrity fixation or private communities. Users would reasonably want to know what is stored, whether it is public by default, whether searches train models, and whether data can be exported or deleted.

Copyright and attribution

The underlying material spans copyrighted entertainment, fan fiction, fan art, social posts, forum discussions and unstable or deleted pages. Lore would need permissions, durable links, creator attribution and policies for takedowns and summaries. Indexing a discussion is not the same as owning or republishing it.

Coverage and explainability

A recommendation should explain why two topics are connected, not merely draw an attractive line between them. Coverage also needs to extend beyond English-language, U.S.-centric and heavily monetized fandoms if the product claims to map internet culture broadly.

What the $1.1 million round means

This is an early pre-seed financing, not a Series A or proof of scale. The cited report disclosed no valuation, revenue, paid plan, business model or current runway. The money was described as supporting hiring, user acquisition and continued testing.

Possible monetization paths are analysis rather than announced plans:

  • Subscriptions for deeper research, larger archives or advanced graph tools.
  • Licensed franchise databases or partnerships.
  • Affiliate commerce involving books, films, games, collectibles and merchandise.
  • Creator and community tools.
  • Licensing a knowledge graph or recommendation system.
  • Sponsored discovery.

Each option creates a trust trade-off. Official studio partnerships could provide data and funding but bias recommendations toward authorized interpretations. Sponsored merchandise could make an independent fan space feel like a storefront. Subscription pricing could protect editorial independence but limit access.

What would make Lore genuinely useful?

  • High-quality sources instead of unsupported summaries.
  • Visible separation of canon, reporting, theory, rumor and speculation.
  • Granular spoiler controls.
  • Support for articles, videos, interviews, archives, images, wikis, forums and social posts.
  • Explainable connections that preserve dates and context.
  • Privacy controls for personal interest histories, including export and deletion.
  • Moderation that addresses harassment, manipulation and misinformation without flattening legitimate disagreement.
  • Respect for copyright, creator attribution and platform terms.

Bottom line

Lore’s potentially new category is not a demonstrated search breakthrough; it is a fandom-first way of organizing discovery, memory and cultural context. The $1.1 million pre-seed round gives Naqvi’s team resources to test that thesis, while the early usage figures show interest rather than verified product-market fit. Until a public, inspectable product reveals its sources, privacy controls, spoiler handling and recommendation quality, Lore is best understood as a promising proposal—not yet a proven replacement for Reddit, wikis, bookmarks or AI search.
