For most travelers, the Samsonite Freeform two-piece set is the best place to start. Travel + Leisure says its Freeform carry-on was tested three times and describes the carry-on-and-large-checked combination as reliable, durable, and fairly priced; Good Housekeeping also names Freeform its Best Overall set after repeated three-foot drop tests showed no major damage. If keeping the cost down matters most, consider the Amazon Basics Hardside Spinner Set. Families needing two carry-ons and two checked bags should look at Coolife’s four-piece hardshell set.

| Amazon Basics Hardside Spinner Set | Best affordable set | Piece count and sizes not stated in Travel + Leisure’s 2026 affordable-set review. | Travel + Leisure evaluated affordable sets averaging $50–$100 per bag and reports six months of real-travel evaluation; the accolade is for this set within that tested group, not a current fixed price. |
| Coolife four-piece hardshell set | Best family configuration | Four pieces: two carry-ons and two checked cases (Travel + Leisure, 2026) | The review provides dimensions, weights, and capacities for each case; check the live listing because marketplace configurations can change. |

Best overall two-piece luggage set: Samsonite Freeform
The Freeform is the strongest general-purpose choice in the available testing because it pairs one carry-on with a large checked case rather than adding pieces a typical traveler may not need. Travel + Leisure reports testing the Freeform carry-on three separate times and recommends the carry-on/large-checked combination for reliability, durability, and value. Good Housekeeping independently selected Freeform as its Best Overall set after repeated three-foot drop tests resulted in no major damage.

Those findings support a balanced recommendation, not a promise that a case will never scratch, dent, or fail. Warranty coverage is another separate question: Travel + Leisure cautions that luggage warranties often address manufacturing defects rather than ordinary cosmetic wear such as scratches or dents. Read the current warranty terms for the exact set before purchase.
Best affordable luggage set: Amazon Basics Hardside Spinner
Travel + Leisure names the Amazon Basics Hardside Spinner Set Best Overall in its affordable-set test. The publication says its tested sets averaged $50–$100 per bag, and it evaluated spaciousness, design features, maneuverability, value, and durability after six months of real travel. That makes this a useful budget-led pick, but the test’s average is not a current price for this set: retailer prices, discounts, and what each listing includes can change.

Before choosing a low-cost set, confirm the pieces and dimensions in the current listing. Then compare the features that affect everyday use: interior capacity and organization, wheel movement, handle stability, shell construction, and whether the case expands. A lower purchase price matters less if the set includes sizes you will not use or if one bag cannot meet your airline’s carry-on limit.

| Case | Dimensions | Weight | Capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smaller carry-on | 19 × 12.75 × 8.25 in | 4.7 lb | 30 L |
| Larger carry-on | 22.5 × 15.5 × 9.25 in | 6.3 lb | 38 L |
| Medium checked case | 26.5 × 18.25 × 10.25 in | 7.9 lb | 60 L |
| Large checked case | 30.25 × 20.75 × 11.75 in | 10 lb | 93 L |
The review identifies the cases as ABS and non-expandable. Capacity varies substantially across the four sizes, so the set offers different roles rather than four interchangeable bags. Check the current marketplace listing to ensure it matches this configuration; dimensions alone do not establish that either carry-on will meet every airline’s size limit.

The brand says the carry-on is sizer-bin tested for most major U.S. airlines, but warns that it may not meet airline restrictions when fully expanded. If a carrier strictly enforces its size limit, board with the bag unexpanded and confirm the airline’s current rules. Travelpro specifies a 100% polycarbonate shell and two-inch expansion.
Travelpro’s official page describes a limited warranty covering functional defects involving wheels, zippers, extension handles, and carrying handles. It also says registration adds shipping and carrier-damage benefits for stated periods, and offers a 100-day trial. Check the current terms for eligibility, coverage periods, and return conditions before relying on those benefits.

How to choose the right luggage set for your trips
Match the number of pieces to how you travel
Travel + Leisure’s guidance is that two-piece sets usually suit solo or light travelers, while overpackers, families, and people on extended stays may benefit from three- or four-piece sets. Think about whether the extra cases will be used: a larger set may offer flexibility, but it also takes up storage space and can cost more than buying only the sizes you need.

Outside dimensions help determine whether a bag can fit in an overhead bin or a checked-bag limit, but they do not tell you how much it holds or how easy it is to pack. Compare stated liters and interior organization, and consider how the different sizes will divide clothing and belongings among the people on the trip.

Check mobility and construction
Wheel smoothness, handle sturdiness, and maneuverability are among the factors Travel + Leisure evaluated in its affordable-set testing. Construction also affects the trade-offs: ABS, polycarbonate, and softside fabric differ in weight, flexibility, access, and resistance to damage. Expandability can add packing room, but an expanded bag may exceed airline limits.
Verify airline fit before flying
Airline size limits differ and can change. Check each carrier’s published carry-on rules for your itinerary, including whether dimensions include wheels and handles, and measure the bag in the configuration you intend to board with. Do not assume that an unexpanded case remains compliant after adding an expansion panel.
Read warranty and return terms as separate protections
A warranty may cover functional defects without covering everyday cosmetic wear. A return trial is not the same as a warranty, and registration benefits may have eligibility conditions or time limits. Review the current terms for the specific set and seller, especially for shipping costs, carrier damage, and exclusions.
