Paid identity-theft protection is best understood as a monitoring and recovery service—not a force field around your identity. These companies can watch credit files, bank accounts, data-broker listings, public records, and other signals, then alert you when something changes. They may also provide fraud-resolution help, insurance, password management, VPN access, or device security.
They do not replace the most important free protections: freeze your files at Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, review your reports, turn on bank alerts, and request an IRS Identity Protection PIN. With that baseline in place, Aura is the strongest all-around paid option for most households in 2026. LifeLock makes more sense for Norton customers, Identity Guard offers strong value for broad monitoring, and Experian IdentityWorks is the natural fit for people who want Experian’s tools.

- Family: $32 per month annually, or $50 monthly.

Aura advertises up to $1 million in identity-theft insurance per adult, with up to $5 million on the Family plan. Annual plans advertise a 14-day free trial and a 60-day money-back guarantee.
Independent 2026 evaluations from Forbes Advisor, TechRadar, and Tom’s Guide put Aura among the leading services. TechRadar says it evaluated 27 identity-protection services, while Tom’s Guide highlighted Aura’s navigable interface and broad feature set.
Important caveat: Aura disclosed a March 2026 security incident involving approximately 900,000 records from a marketing tool. Aura said the records consisted primarily of names and email addresses, with fewer than 20,000 active customers and fewer than 15,000 former customers having contact information exposed. It said its identity-protection databases were not accessed and that Social Security numbers, financial information, credit records, passwords, payment details, and credentials were not compromised.

2. LifeLock: Best for Norton customers and high-limit recovery coverage
LifeLock is a better fit for people already invested in Norton’s security ecosystem. Its plans can combine identity monitoring with Norton antivirus, VPN, password management, and parental controls. It also advertises some of the highest headline identity-theft coverage limits in this comparison.

The main individual tiers are:
| Plan | Annual price | Monthly price | Advertised identity-theft coverage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core | $124.99 for the first year | $12.49 | Up to $1.05 million |
| Advanced | $199.99 for the first year | $19.99 | Up to $1.2 million |
| Total | $349.99 for the first year | $34.99 | Up to $1.5 million |
LifeLock’s plan levels differ in bank-account alerts, credit-bureau monitoring, credit and payday-loan locks, reimbursement, and the limits applied to stolen funds and recovery expenses. The large insurance number should not be treated as a promise that every loss will be reimbursed; the policy’s definitions, exclusions, and sublimits matter.
The biggest weakness is pricing complexity. First-year offers and renewal prices can be difficult to compare, and family plans may provide less adult coverage than shoppers expect. TechRadar also flagged LifeLock’s confusing pricing and post-introduction increases.
Choose LifeLock if: you want Norton’s broader security bundle or specifically value LifeLock’s higher advertised coverage limits. If you want a simple, lower-cost identity-monitoring subscription, compare the renewal price against Aura and Identity Guard first.
3. Identity Guard: Best value for broad monitoring
Identity Guard’s lower introductory price makes it attractive for households that want more than basic credit monitoring without paying LifeLock’s higher tiers. Its plans add progressively broader alerts, with the more expensive options covering areas such as bank and investment accounts, title records, USPS address changes, and credit activity.
Current individual pricing is:
- Value: $7.50 per month for the first year when billed annually; $8.99 monthly and $8.99 per month at renewal.
- Total: $16.67 per month for the first year; $19.99 monthly and at renewal.
- Ultra: $25 per month for the first year; $29.99 monthly and at renewal.
Family plans cover up to five adults and unlimited children. Plans include fraud resolution and up to $1 million of identity-theft insurance. Higher tiers add three-bureau credit monitoring, monthly scores, Experian CreditLock, bank and investment monitoring, title monitoring, and USPS address-change monitoring.
The value calculation changes substantially after the first year. The discounted annual price is an introductory rate, not the continuing cost. Identity Guard advertises a 60-day money-back guarantee on annual plans, but shoppers should still record the renewal date and check the cancellation terms.

- UNLIMITED RE-INK: Miseyo roller stamp comes with an ink hole on the side, do not have to worry about the ink running out when you have to throw away the roller stamps, it can be refilled with ink for repeated use, no need to replace the roller, and permanently hide private identity information
- GOOD TIME SAVER: Are you still shredding private paper the old way? Trouble with pen scribbling 100 times? Burning danger and worry? Use miseyo stamp simple scroll to solve your worries and quickly hide your private and important information
Choose Identity Guard if: you want broad monitoring at a lower first-year price and are willing to manage renewal pricing carefully. The Value plan is not equivalent to the higher tiers, so check which bureaus and account types are included before selecting it.
4. Experian IdentityWorks: Best if Experian tools are the priority
Experian IdentityWorks is the clearest choice for people who want Experian’s credit tools integrated into their identity-protection subscription. Its Premium plan includes three-bureau monitoring, Social Security number trace alerts, change-of-address alerts, court-record and booking alerts, non-credit-loan alerts, social-network monitoring, Experian CreditLock, quarterly three-bureau reports and scores, fraud-resolution support, and up to $1 million in identity-theft insurance.
Pricing is less flexible than the alternatives:
- Premium: $24.99 per month after a seven-day trial.
- Family: $34.99 per month after a seven-day trial.
A credit card is required for the trial, and the subscription continues automatically unless canceled within seven days. That makes the trial deadline worth treating as a calendar reminder rather than an assumption.
Experian also has a free Basic tier with Experian credit monitoring, one free Experian report and FICO Score, a FICO Score tracker, a dark-web surveillance report, and a privacy scan. It is useful, but it is not the same as paid three-bureau monitoring.

Choose Experian IdentityWorks if: Experian’s score, CreditLock, and account experience matter more to you than the lowest price or a broader device-security bundle.
What identity-theft protection actually covers
Monitoring is not prevention
Monitoring looks for signs that information has been used or exposed. A credit freeze works earlier in the process by restricting prospective creditors’ access to your credit file. The Federal Trade Commission calls a freeze the best way to prevent an identity thief from opening many new accounts in your name.

A paid alert may tell you about a new inquiry, account, address change, exposed email address, or suspicious bank transaction. It cannot guarantee that a criminal will be stopped before damage occurs.
Credit monitoring misses important types of theft
The FTC warns that credit monitoring will not necessarily detect money withdrawn from a bank account or a fraudulent federal tax return. Use direct alerts from your bank and card issuers, and add an IRS Identity Protection PIN. Those controls cover risks that a credit-focused service may not see.

Dark-web alerts do not prove fraud
An alert that finds your email address or phone number in a leaked database means the information may be exposed. It does not prove that someone opened an account, accessed your bank, or committed identity theft. Change reused passwords, enable multifactor authentication, and investigate any accompanying account activity.
Insurance is narrower than the headline number
Identity-theft insurance commonly covers qualifying recovery expenses such as copying, postage, lost wages, and legal fees. It generally is not general reimbursement for money stolen by a scammer, and it may not pay losses already covered by homeowners or renters insurance. Read the policy’s exclusions and sublimits before treating insurance as a reason to buy.
Three-bureau monitoring needs a closer look
“Three-bureau monitoring” does not mean every feature uses all three credit bureaus. A plan may monitor one bureau for a particular alert, obtain a score from another, and offer a lock for only one file. Compare the bureaus monitored, the bureau supplying the score, and the bureau that can be locked as separate features.
Likewise, a provider’s credit lock is not the same as a statutory credit freeze. A lock is a service feature governed by the company’s terms. A freeze is a federally regulated consumer right and is free.

Build the free protection stack first
- Freeze all three credit files. Use the official freeze portals for Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. You can temporarily lift a freeze when applying for credit.
- Check your reports. Go to AnnualCreditReport.com, the federally authorized source. Reports from all three nationwide bureaus are currently available weekly.
- Request an IRS IP PIN. Sign in to your IRS Individual Online Account, open Profile, and select the IP PIN option. The IRS issues a new six-digit PIN each year. Anyone with an SSN or ITIN who can verify their identity may request one.
- Turn on financial-account alerts. Enable notifications for logins, new payees, transfers, card-not-present purchases, address changes, and large transactions through each bank and card issuer.
- Use a fraud alert when appropriate. An initial fraud alert lasts one year. An extended alert for identity-theft victims lasts seven years, and a fraud alert can be used alongside a freeze.

FAQ
What is the best identity-theft protection service in 2026?
Aura is the best overall paid option for most people because it combines identity and credit monitoring with fraud remediation, insurance, data-broker removal, a VPN, password management, and device security. LifeLock, Identity Guard, and Experian IdentityWorks can be better fits for specific needs.
Is paid identity-theft protection worth it?
It can be worthwhile if you value automated monitoring across several data types, recovery assistance, family coverage, insurance, or privacy and device tools. It is not essential for everyone: free credit freezes, bank alerts, AnnualCreditReport.com, and an IRS IP PIN provide a strong baseline.
Does identity-theft protection prevent identity theft?
No. Paid services generally monitor and alert after suspicious activity or exposure. A credit freeze is the stronger tool for preventing many new-credit accounts, while bank alerts and an IRS IP PIN address risks credit monitoring may miss.
What should I do if my identity has already been stolen?
Contact the affected bank, card issuer, or creditor; review all three credit reports; place freezes and a fraud alert; report the theft at IdentityTheft.gov; and notify the IRS if tax fraud is involved. A paid service’s fraud-resolution team may help organize these steps, but you can start them for free.

The Bottom Line
Our verdict: Aura is the best overall paid identity-theft protection service for 2026. LifeLock is strongest for Norton users and shoppers focused on higher advertised recovery limits. Identity Guard offers the best value for broad monitoring, while Experian IdentityWorks suits people who prioritize Experian’s credit tools.
Before buying any subscription, freeze your Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion files, request an IRS IP PIN, obtain your reports from AnnualCreditReport.com, and activate alerts with your financial institutions. Paid protection improves convenience, monitoring, and recovery support; it does not guarantee prevention.
