Why the lowest monthly payment was not the whole cost
The Ariya’s $99 headline payment works out to $3,564 in listed payments over 36 months, before the $3,329 due at signing. That is $6,893 in those two advertised amounts alone—not an all-in cost, because taxes, fees, and any other contract charges may add to it. This calculation also does not assign a value to the location-specific incentives or establish that a particular shopper qualified.

For a sense of how detailed disclosures can be, BMW of Gwinnett Place’s 2024 offer example listed a $449 monthly payment based on a $7,500 Lease Credit, a $2,850 suggested dealer contribution, a $3,495 capitalized-cost reduction, the first monthly payment, and an acquisition fee. It also specified a 30,000-mile total allowance and a charge for each excess mile. Those terms are from a different offer and illustrate why the monthly payment alone is not a complete comparison. Match the vehicle to how you drive
The August roundup reported range figures for several listed configurations: 149 miles for the LEAF S 40 kWh, 253 miles for the Niro EV Wind, 303 miles for the IONIQ 5 RWD example, and 310 miles for the Kia EV6 Light Long Range RWD. These are the source’s reported figures for those configurations, not independent road-test results; real-world range varies with conditions and use. A lower payment may be a poor fit if the vehicle’s range, size, or charging needs do not suit your routine.

Lease incentives are not automatically personal tax credits
The IRS’s 2024 clean-vehicle purchase-credit table listed the 2024 Nissan LEAF S and SV PLUS with a $3,750 credit amount and a $55,000 applicable MSRP limit. It listed several 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 configurations and the Chevrolet Equinox EV with $7,500 amounts and an $80,000 limit. These are entries in the IRS purchase-credit table; they do not establish that an individual lessee receives that amount or that a lessor passes it through in a particular lease. A 2023 Energy Innovation modeled study found that leasing an EV had a lower monthly cost in most of its evaluated comparisons than leasing a comparable gasoline vehicle or buying an EV or gasoline vehicle. Some modeled comparisons were up to $500 per month cheaper; the report attributed part of the modeled savings to a $7,500 leased-EV tax credit and said many, but not all, dealers passed lease-credit savings through. Those are modeled results from 2023, not observed prices or proof of how any specific 2024 contract treated a credit. Energy Innovation’s August 2023 analysis.
