The date matters: December 2024 is in the past. A list of assets that might be worth considering now would need current, date-specific evidence; it cannot be inferred from a historical headline or from a later regulatory classification.
What does the SEC’s later classification of Bitcoin, Ether, and Solana mean?
On March 17, 2026, the SEC announced a joint SEC-CFTC interpretive action addressing how federal securities laws apply to certain crypto assets and transactions. The action describes a taxonomy that includes digital commodities, digital collectibles, digital tools, stablecoins, and digital securities, and covers subjects including staking and airdrops. In the SEC’s crypto asset resource, Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), and Solana (SOL) are examples of digital commodities under that guidance.

That classification is regulatory context published after December 2024. It does not say those assets are suitable investments, rank them against one another, establish their expected returns, or show that they were the best buys in 2024. The SEC Division of Corporation Finance’s FAQ, updated through September 28, 2026, also says its answers represent staff views, not rules or regulations, and have no legal force or effect.
How can someone get crypto exposure?

The SEC says bitcoin and ether are highly speculative investments. For spot bitcoin and ether ETPs, it also identifies possible loss, price volatility, differences between the ETP share price and the underlying asset’s performance, risks in the underlying crypto market, and sponsor fees. An ETP changes how exposure is packaged; it does not remove the possibility of loss.
What risks should a buyer assess before making a decision?
The SEC’s March 23, 2023 crypto securities investor alert describes risks that can affect crypto asset securities and related platforms. Its cautions are not a prediction about a particular token or product, but they are relevant questions to consider when evaluating an investment or the services used to access it.

- Price and liquidity: Crypto assets may be volatile, and an asset or platform may be illiquid when an investor wants to sell or withdraw.
- Platform and custody: A platform may fail or enter bankruptcy, suspend withdrawals, or provide limited information about asset ownership or custody. Unauthorized transfers, hacking, and malware are also risks.
- Fraud and protections: Fraud and regulatory restrictions can affect crypto-related investments and services. Investor protections may be limited; do not assume that protections applying to other financial products apply in the same way.
- Personal fit: Consider your financial plan, risk tolerance, and time horizon. The SEC cautions against investing money you cannot afford to lose entirely.
For an ETP, review the actual product documents rather than treating “spot” or “futures” as a complete description of its costs and risks. Fees, custody, product structure, and tracking behavior can differ by product.

A hardware wallet does not prevent a crypto asset’s price from falling, make an investment sound, or guarantee security. Self-custody shifts operational responsibility to the owner: losing access to keys or exposing the recovery backup can create a separate problem from market risk.
