In J.D. Power’s 2026 North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index, Microtel by Wyndham ranked highest in the Economy segment, while WoodSpring Suites led Economy Extended Stay. Those are guest-satisfaction winners within their respective categories—not proof that either chain will offer the lowest price for your next trip. Rates depend on the destination, dates, property, taxes, and fees.
Which budget hotel chains do guests rate best?
J.D. Power’s 2026 study named two leaders among the economy categories:

J.D. Power reported that each brand had ranked first in its segment for four consecutive years. The scores are segment-specific results from the 2026 study; they are not price rankings. J.D. Power’s 2026 results cover 104 brands across nine segments and draw on responses from 44,787 branded-hotel guests whose stays took place between May 2025 and May 2026.
What does the guest-satisfaction ranking measure?
The study evaluates check-in and check-out, hotel connectivity, facilities, food and beverage, guest rooms, staff service, and value for prices paid. It offers a broad view of guest experience across branded stays, rather than a guarantee about a particular hotel or a ranking of the lowest available nightly rates.

Across the full study—not just the Economy categories—overall satisfaction rose 13 points to 665 out of 1,000 in 2026, and satisfaction with value for prices paid increased 18 points year over year. These are overall-study findings, not scores or changes specific to Microtel or WoodSpring. J.D. Power explains its segment-based awards on its hotel awards page.
How to decide whether a chain is actually a good deal
Use the segment ranking to narrow your options, then compare the actual stay you would book. A high guest-satisfaction position does not tell you whether a property is convenient, well maintained, or affordable for your dates.

- Compare the total trip-specific price. Check the same dates and room type, and include taxes and any fees shown before booking. The study does not compare live rates, taxes, or property-level charges.
- Check the exact location. Compare travel time to your destination, parking arrangements, and any transportation costs that affect your budget.
- Read recent reviews for the specific property. Look for current comments about cleanliness, upkeep, staff, room condition, and noise rather than assuming every hotel in a chain delivers the same experience.
- Match amenities to your stay. Connectivity, food, room setup, and check-in experience may matter differently on a short visit than on an extended stay.
When an extended-stay brand or nearby category may fit better
WoodSpring Suites for an extended stay
Choice Hotels describes WoodSpring Suites as an economy extended-stay brand with suites, in-room kitchens, laundry, free Wi-Fi, and flexible payment options. Those are chain-level descriptions, not a promise that every property offers the same facilities or terms. Check the specific hotel’s listing before relying on a kitchen, laundry, Wi-Fi, or payment arrangement. Choice Hotels’ WoodSpring Suites page provides the brand description.
Other value-oriented winners outside the Economy segment
If your priorities make a broader value-oriented option worth comparing, J.D. Power’s 2026 study also named Hampton by Hilton the Upper Midscale leader, Tru by Hilton the Midscale leader, and Home2 Suites by Hilton the Upper Midscale/Midscale Extended Stay leader. They are not Economy-segment winners, so compare their actual prices and amenities with your budget rather than treating them as equivalent category results.

Hilton describes complimentary hot breakfast at Hampton, breakfast and modern guest rooms at Tru, and in-suite kitchens and complimentary breakfast at Home2 Suites. Confirm the offer and facilities at the specific property. The Hilton announcement lists its 2026 segment results and brand descriptions.

The 2026 results are useful evidence of how guests rated brands within defined segments, but they cannot predict your experience at one hotel. They also cannot identify the cheapest chain for a particular U.S. city and date. For a booking decision, combine the category result with the property’s current reviews, location, amenities, and all-in price.

Be careful when comparing the scores with earlier editions. J.D. Power reported Microtel at 619 and WoodSpring at 600 in 2025, but said the study had been redesigned and the scores were not comparable with previous-year studies. The 2025 figures therefore do not show a valid year-over-year score change against the 2026 results. J.D. Power’s 2025 results provide that context.
