You probably should not buy or pack all 19. The list mixes practical tools with comfort upgrades, luxury accessories, and highly personal editor favorites.
This guide breaks down every T+L pick by usefulness, price, space, availability, and airport rules. T+L’s page, updated January 30, 2026, is an editor-recommendation roundup—not a standardized product test—and its displayed prices are snapshots that can change. Most importantly, “TSA-approved” is not a blanket certification for consumer products: screening officers make the final decision, while airlines separately control bag size, weight, and fare rules.

| Need | T+L pick to consider | Why it may be worth the space or money |
|---|---|---|
| Charging | Anker Nano 3-in-1 Portable Power Bank | Combines a power bank, wall plug, built-in cable, and battery display. Verify the exact model before buying. |
| Hydration | Owala FreeSip insulated bottle | Carry it empty through security and refill it afterward. |
| Organization | Care.e.on Carry-all | Gives small seat essentials a designated place instead of leaving them loose in the seat pocket. |
| Sleep or comfort | Ostrichpillow Mini Handy Pillow or Marlow The Mini Pillow | Choose one based on your sleeping position; bringing both is usually redundant. |
| Reading | Kobo Libra Colour | A dedicated reading device for long flights, though a phone or tablet may already cover this need. |
| Noise | Loop Dream, AirPods Pro 2, or Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2e | Choose one audio solution based on desired size, battery life, noise reduction, and budget. |
| Dry lips or eyes | e.l.f. Skin Holy Hydration Lip Mask or Blink Tears | Useful for travelers who already experience these problems; neither is essential for everyone. |
| Bag weight | Travel Inspira Digital Luggage Scale | Most useful for checked bags or airlines with strict carry-on weight limits. |
The best-value carry-on is not necessarily the cheapest product. It is the item you will use repeatedly, can access quickly, and will not need to replace with something already in your bag.

First, understand what “carry-on” means
A carry-on bag is generally the larger cabin bag stored in the overhead bin. A personal item is generally a smaller bag stored under the seat. An in-flight essential is simply something you remove from either bag after boarding; it is not automatically a third free bag.
There is no universal worldwide carry-on size. For example, American Airlines and Delta list a standard maximum of 22 × 14 × 9 inches, including wheels and handles. Frontier currently lists a paid carry-on limit of 24 × 16 × 10 inches and a 14 × 18 × 8-inch personal item. Fare type, aircraft, route, regional-jet restrictions, and international airline rules can change the result.
Before buying a large travel accessory, check the operating airline—not just the airline that sold the ticket. Measure the bag with its wheels, handles, and exterior pockets where the airline includes them. A product that fits inside a full-size roller may be a poor choice for a free personal-item-only fare.
All 19 T+L picks, sorted by practical value
The prices below are the amounts displayed on the T+L roundup during research. They are not guaranteed current prices, sale prices, or evidence that one product is objectively better than another.
| Category | Product | Price shown by T+L | Practical verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sleep and comfort | Ostrichpillow Mini Handy Pillow | $39 | Compact hand-and-window support for window-seat or forward-leaning rest. Manufacturer dimensions are 9.8 × 6.7 × 2.7 inches and 80 grams. |
| Charging | Anker Nano 3-in-1 Portable Power Bank | $53 Amazon; $40 Anker | Potentially high value because it combines several accessories, but the exact T+L-linked Anker page currently returns a 404. Confirm the model, watt-hour rating, connector, and stock. |
| Clothing and comfort | White + Warren Cashmere Travel Wrap | $385 | A scarf, shawl, blanket, or pillow substitute that can be worn instead of packed. It is a luxury purchase: 81 × 36 inches and 100% cashmere according to the official listing. |
| Wellness | Comrad Knee-high Compression Socks | $34 | Graduated 15–20 mmHg compression may appeal to travelers who experience leg discomfort or swelling. The selected style showed as sold out during research, and compression socks are not medically necessary for everyone. |
| Reading | Kobo Libra Colour | $259 Amazon | A dedicated 7-inch color E Ink reader with page-turn buttons, 32 GB storage, waterproofing, and Stylus 2 compatibility. Excellent for committed readers, redundant if your phone is enough. |
| Weight control | Travel Inspira Digital Luggage Scale | $10 | Small and inexpensive insurance against a weight fee. More useful for checked luggage or weight-restricted airlines than for every U.S. domestic traveler. |
| Beauty | e.l.f. Skin Holy Hydration Lip Mask | $7–$8 | A low-cost option for travelers whose lips dry out in the cabin. Pack it with other liquids, gels, or creams if its consistency requires it. |
| Organization | Care.e.on Carry-all | $36 | A removable organizer designed for seatback-pocket items. It can reduce loose-item clutter, but you still need to inspect the seat pocket before leaving. |
| Hydration | Owala FreeSip insulated bottle | $24–$30 | The 24-ounce model is listed as leakproof and insulated, with a built-in straw and wide-mouth opening. Empty it before security and refill it after. |
| Audio | Apple AirPods Pro 2 | $195–$264 | Small active-noise-canceling earbuds that are easy to store. Performance depends on fit, seal, battery, and selected noise mode; they will not eliminate every sound. |
| Entertainment | Nintendo Switch Lite | $227–$230 | Useful offline entertainment for gamers and long delays, but it adds weight and charging needs and may duplicate a phone or e-reader. |
| Eye comfort | Blink Tears Lubricating Eye Drops | $11–$26 | Reasonable for travelers who already use lubricating drops or regularly experience dry eyes. Follow a clinician’s advice for chronic eye conditions. |
| Blanket | Prince of Scots Highland Tweeds Herringbone Roll-up Travel Blanket | $295 | A large shared blanket for couples or families, not a compact universal essential. T+L itself notes that it is not small. |
| Pillow | Marlow The Mini Pillow | $56–$65 | A rectangular alternative to a C-shaped neck pillow. A preference-based comfort upgrade; verify current dimensions and availability before purchasing. |
| Sleep and noise | Loop Dream Earplugs | $50 | Reusable, battery-free noise reduction for travelers who do not want over-ear headphones. Keep enough awareness for announcements and crew instructions. |
| Audio | Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2e | $399 | A premium over-ear option, but its case and bulk make it a poor default for light packers. Compare it with headphones you already own before spending. |
| Beauty | Merit Flush Balm Cheek Color | $30 | A brush-free blush balm that can also be used on lips. Depending on its form, screening officers may treat it as a cream or balm under liquids rules. |
| Skin care | Laura Mercier Natural Dewy Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30 | $50 | The 45-mL tube is below the 100-mL container limit, but it belongs in the liquids bag. SPF is part of a normal skin-care routine, not a special airline requirement. |
| Clothing and comfort | Garnet Hill Cashmere Ankle Socks | $40 | A light comfort layer that is easier to justify than a large blanket. The supplied product link now redirects to a general socks category, so verify the exact style. |
The genuinely useful core: pack these first
1. A power bank, if you need your phone to function after boarding
The Anker concept is practical because one device can replace a wall charger, cable, and separate battery. But do not purchase from an old link without confirming the exact model. The T+L-linked Anker URL currently returns a 404, while retailer listings describe a similar 10,000-mAh, 30-watt model. Check whether it has the connector your phone uses, whether it can charge your other devices, and whether its output is sufficient for a tablet or laptop.
Capacity is normally advertised in milliamp-hours, but aviation rules use watt-hours. A 10,000-mAh battery is not automatically a 10,000-watt-hour battery. Watt-hours are calculated from voltage multiplied by amp-hours; use the manufacturer’s printed watt-hour rating rather than guessing from the marketing name. A typical 10,000-mAh pack at a nominal 3.7 volts would be about 37 Wh, but the label for the exact unit controls.
2. An empty refillable bottle
The TSA’s item guidance permits empty water bottles and empty beverage containers through security. With the Owala FreeSip, the useful routine is simple: empty it before the checkpoint, keep it accessible if an officer wants to inspect it, and refill it after security. It can reduce repeated airport beverage purchases, but choose a size that fits your bag’s side pocket and your airline’s under-seat space.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →3. A small organizer
The Care.e.on Carry-all addresses an ordinary but costly travel annoyance: small items disappearing into a seat pocket or being left behind. It is most useful if you carry earbuds, cables, eye drops, lip balm, medication, and a passport. If your personal item already has an accessible pocket, the $36 organizer may be redundant. Its real value is retrieval and end-of-flight accountability, not extra capacity.
4. Medication and personal necessities
Some of the most important items are not among the 19 products. Carry prescription medication, essential over-the-counter medicine, identification, travel documents, payment methods, glasses or contacts, critical chargers, and valuables in the cabin. If checked luggage is delayed, a spare shirt or underwear, basic toiletries, tissues or wipes, and a small snack can matter more than a luxury blanket.
Rank #2
- The Perfect Size: The textured, scratch-resistant exterior of this hardshell carry-on luggage is 15 x 10 x 23 inches" with wheels and meets the cabin size restrictions of most airlines.
- Stay Organized: This small hard-sided carry-on suitcase provides ample packing room with a spacious 20.5" x 14.5" x 10.0" interior. The elastic straps, divider, and pouch ensure everything stays neatly in place
Comfort upgrades: choose one pillow and one warmth layer
The comfort category contains several overlapping solutions. Packing every one consumes the space the products are supposed to save.
Pillows
- Ostrichpillow Mini Handy Pillow: best suited to window-seat support or forward-leaning rest. Its listed 9.8 × 6.7 × 2.7-inch size and 80-gram weight make it the more obviously compact choice.
- Marlow The Mini Pillow: a rectangular pillow alternative for travelers who dislike the shape of a traditional neck pillow. It is a personal comfort preference, so check the current listing and dimensions before buying.
Choose based on how you actually sleep: a window-seat traveler may value a surface that braces against the wall, while someone who prefers a conventional pillow shape may prefer Marlow. For a personal-item-only trip, use the pillow only if it replaces another packed item or can be attached externally under the airline’s rules.
Wraps, blankets, and socks
- White + Warren Cashmere Travel Wrap, $385: expensive, but more space-efficient when worn as a scarf or wrap. The official listing gives dimensions of 81 × 36 inches and 100% cashmere.
- Prince of Scots Highland Tweeds Herringbone Roll-up Travel Blanket, $295: intended as a large shared blanket. It directly contradicts the idea that every pick is small enough for any cabin bag, so treat it as a family or couple splurge, not a default carry-on essential.
- Garnet Hill Cashmere Ankle Socks, $40: a compact warmth upgrade. The supplied link no longer resolves to the exact product, so confirm that the style is still sold.
- Comrad Knee-high Compression Socks, $34: a targeted wellness product, not simply another pair of warm socks.
For most travelers, one pair of comfortable socks or one wearable wrap provides a better space-to-benefit ratio than a large blanket. A luxury purchase makes more sense when it will also be used at home or on many future trips.
What compression socks can—and cannot—do
Long periods of immobility, particularly trips longer than four hours, can increase the risk of travel-related blood clots. The risk is small for most people but higher for travelers with factors such as a previous clot, recent surgery, pregnancy or postpartum status, cancer, obesity, estrogen use, or limited mobility.
CDC guidance emphasizes moving the legs and walking periodically. Some higher-risk travelers may benefit from graduated compression stockings after discussing the choice with a clinician. Do not describe a particular sock as universally preventing DVT, and do not use compression socks as a substitute for medical advice.
Entertainment and audio: avoid buying three versions of the same solution
Reading
The Kobo Libra Colour has a 7-inch color E Ink display, page-turn buttons, 32 GB of storage, waterproofing, and compatibility with the Kobo Stylus 2. It is a strong fit for someone who reads for hours and wants a dedicated device. The stylus may be an additional purchase, and a traveler who reads only occasionally may get better value from a phone, tablet, or paperback already owned.
Gaming
The Nintendo Switch Lite is a reasonable offline entertainment choice for gamers facing a long flight or delay. It costs more and occupies more space than a phone, requires its own charge, and adds games and accessories to the packing list. It is an entertainment preference—not a universal carry-on need.
Earplugs and headphones
- Loop Dream Earplugs, $50: smallest and simplest of the three audio approaches, with no battery to recharge. They may suit sleepers who do not want headphones.
- Apple AirPods Pro 2, $195–$264: compact and useful for music, podcasts, calls, and active noise control. Fit and seal affect results, and they will not remove every cabin sound.
- Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2e, $399: a premium over-ear choice for people who prioritize extended listening comfort. Its case and bulk are meaningful costs in a small bag.
Choose one primary audio solution. Earplugs, earbuds, and over-ear headphones together are difficult to justify unless each serves a different, regularly used purpose. With any noise-reducing product, remain attentive to announcements and crew safety instructions.
Beauty and wellness: useful if they are already part of your routine
Cabin air can feel dry, but that does not make every skin-care product an essential. The best rule is to pack small quantities of products you know you use, rather than buying a travel version because a list calls it a must-have.
- e.l.f. Skin Holy Hydration Lip Mask, $7–$8: a low-cost, low-space comfort item for travelers prone to dry lips.
- Blink Tears Lubricating Eye Drops, $11–$26: sensible for people who already use lubricating drops. Travelers with chronic eye problems should follow their clinician’s instructions.
- Merit Flush Balm Cheek Color, $30: a brush-free cosmetic that may do double duty on cheeks and lips. Its balm or cream-like form can affect how it is screened.
- Laura Mercier Natural Dewy Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30, $50: the listed 45-mL tube is under the U.S. 100-mL container limit, but it still belongs with other liquids, creams, and gels. SPF is ordinary skin-care guidance, not an aviation-specific requirement.
TSA and FAA rules for these products
There is no blanket “TSA-approved” label
T+L describes its picks using TSA-approved language, but TSA’s own guidance says that a generally permitted item may receive additional screening and that the screening officer makes the final decision. A more accurate description is that these products are generally permitted in carry-on baggage when packed under the applicable liquid, battery, and screening rules.
Rank #3
- Flexible Size & Set Options for Every Trip: Choose the 22” expandable carry-on alone, the 3-piece travel set (22” carry-on + 15” boarding tote + 10” travel kit), or the complete 5-piece set including 30”, 26”, and 22” suitcases with matching travel accessories
- Durable ABS Hardside with Lightweight Construction: Rigid ABS shells protect your belongings while remaining easy to lift, maneuver, and check, ideal for frequent travel and longer trips
- Expandable Design for Extra Packing Capacity: All suitcases expand to provide additional space when needed, giving you flexibility for souvenirs, returns, or extended travel
- Smooth 360° Spinner Wheels & Telescoping Handle: Four multi-directional spinner wheels and a push-button telescopic handle deliver effortless rolling and stable control through airports and terminals
- Coordinated Travel Accessories with Smart Features: Included in the 3 Piece Set and 5 Piece Set options are a 15” boarding tote with add-a-bag sleeve for secure stacking and a compact 10” travel kit to keep essentials organized and accessible
Put liquids, creams, gels, and drops in the liquids bag
Under the standard U.S. rule, each liquid, gel, aerosol, cream, or paste container must be no larger than 3.4 ounces or 100 mL, and the items should fit in one quart-size bag. That means the following should be accessible for screening:
- e.l.f. lip mask, if its consistency is treated as a cream or gel;
- Blink Tears eye drops;
- Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer;
- Merit Flush Balm if the product is treated as a cream or balm;
- any other liquid, gel, aerosol, or paste personal-care product.
The TSA travel guidance and its 3-1-1 checklist provide the applicable instructions. Medically necessary liquids can exceed the standard limit in reasonable quantities, but declare them and expect separate screening. Product format and officer judgment matter, particularly for balms and cosmetics.
Power banks must remain in the cabin
The most important rule for the Anker device comes from the FAA, not a generic TSA product label:
- Power banks and spare lithium batteries must be packed in carry-on baggage, never checked baggage.
- If your carry-on is taken at the gate for checking, remove the power bank and keep it with you in the cabin.
- Lithium-ion batteries up to 100 Wh are generally allowed.
- Batteries from 101 to 160 Wh require airline approval and are limited to two spare batteries.
- Batteries over 160 Wh are prohibited on passenger aircraft.
- Your airline may impose stricter limits or additional instructions.
Keep the power bank accessible rather than buried under clothing. Charge devices before departure, and do not rely solely on airport Wi-Fi or a seat outlet.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA realistic personal-item-only packing list
If your fare includes only a personal item, prioritize the following:
- Passport or government ID and travel documents.
- Prescription medication and other essential medical items.
- Phone, charging cable, and power bank.
- One small pouch for earbuds, lip balm, eye drops, and cables.
- Empty refillable bottle.
- One entertainment device: phone, e-reader, or gaming device.
- Glasses, contacts, and backup vision supplies if needed.
- A change of underwear or shirt if checked luggage is involved.
- Small snacks and tissues or wipes.
In this scenario, skip the large Prince of Scots blanket, avoid carrying both pillows, and think carefully before adding a full-size headphone case, Switch Lite, and e-reader. Wear a wrap or jacket instead of packing it when the airline allows that arrangement, but do not assume an external item is exempt from the airline’s baggage policy.
Match the picks to the trip
| Traveler or trip | More defensible choices | Items to question |
|---|---|---|
| Short domestic flight | Phone and cable, empty bottle, lip balm, existing earbuds, medication | Luxury wrap, large blanket, dedicated e-reader, luggage scale |
| Long-haul traveler | Power bank, bottle, one pillow, one warmth layer, one audio option, eye drops if needed | Every competing pillow, blanket, and audio product at once |
| Personal-item-only traveler | Small organizer, compact earbuds or earplugs, empty bottle, medication, phone or one entertainment device | Large blanket, bulky headphone case, duplicate electronics |
| Frequent international traveler | Power bank with clearly labeled capacity, compact organizer, bottle, one comfort layer | Assuming U.S. airline dimensions or liquid rules apply everywhere |
| Family or couple | Shared blanket only if the airline and bag arrangement allow it; one common organizer can be useful | Assuming the $295 blanket fits inside a small cabin bag |
| Traveler with dry eyes or lips | Blink Tears and e.l.f. lip mask, packed correctly | Buying products you do not normally use; ignoring clinician instructions |
| Traveler at higher clot risk | Movement during the trip and clinician-approved compression strategy | Assuming any compression sock guarantees clot prevention |
Buying advice for a personal-finance-minded traveler
Use the replacement test
Before paying for a product, ask what it replaces. The Anker may replace a wall plug, cable, and separate battery. A wrap may replace a blanket and scarf. A Kobo replaces a stack of books for a frequent reader. But an organizer does not necessarily replace an existing zip pouch, and a second pair of noise-reducing headphones does not create value if your current earbuds work.
Account for the total cost
Price is only one part of the decision. Include the case, extra cable, stylus, replacement parts, delivery, return shipping, and the space or weight penalty. A $399 pair of headphones can be rational for someone who flies often and uses them at home; it is a poor travel purchase if it will be used for one vacation and carried in a bulky case.
Separate low-cost experiments from luxury commitments
- Lower-cost practical trials: the $7–$8 lip mask, $10 luggage scale, and $11–$26 eye drops.
- Midrange upgrades: the $24–$30 bottle, $34 compression socks, $36 organizer, and $39 compact pillow.
- Higher-cost or luxury purchases: the $50 earplugs, $50 moisturizer, $56–$65 mini pillow, $195–$264 earbuds, $227–$230 Switch Lite, $259 e-reader, $295 blanket, $385 cashmere wrap, and $399 headphones.
Do not let the label “editor essential” flatten those price differences. A $7 cosmetic and a $399 headphone solve very different problems and should not receive the same buying standard.

Check availability immediately before buying
At least three listings in the roundup require caution: the exact Anker URL returns 404; the selected Comrad sock style showed as sold out; and the Garnet Hill link redirects to a general socks category rather than the exact product. Prices, colors, retailers, and model numbers can change. Verify the exact item, current stock, dimensions, weight, return policy, and retailer before checkout.
Pack in this order
Before leaving home
- Check the operating airline’s carry-on and personal-item dimensions, weight limits, and fare restrictions.
- Measure your packed bag, including wheels, handles, and exterior pockets where applicable.
- Move all liquids, creams, gels, and aerosols into containers of 100 mL or less.
- Put standard liquids into one clear quart-size bag.
- Separate medically necessary liquids and keep them accessible.
- Confirm the power bank’s watt-hour rating and pack it in your carry-on.
- Charge your phone, headphones, e-reader, or gaming device before departure.
- Place passport, medication, valuables, and one small in-flight pouch where they can be reached quickly.
At security
- Carry the bottle empty.
- Follow the checkpoint’s instructions for electronics and liquids.
- Declare medication and medically necessary liquids when required.
- Expect additional screening if an item is difficult to identify or inspect.
After security and on the plane
- Refill the bottle.
- Return the liquids bag to the personal item.
- Keep the power bank accessible.
- Move only the items you need during the flight into one small pouch.
- Keep earplugs and noise-canceling headphones at a level that allows you to notice crew instructions.
- Before deplaning, check the seat pocket, under-seat area, and charging outlet for forgotten items.
If the carry-on is gate-checked
Remove the power bank, spare batteries, medications, passport and documents, valuables, and any electronics you need during the flight. The FAA specifically requires spare lithium batteries and power banks to remain with the passenger in the cabin.
Bottom line on the 19-item list
T+L’s roundup is useful as a menu, not as a universal shopping list. For the broadest value, choose the Owala bottle, a compliant power bank, a small organizer, and one compact audio or entertainment option—then add products tied to a real need. Choose one pillow, one warmth layer, and one audio solution. Treat the cashmere wrap, large blanket, premium headphones, e-reader, and gaming device as discretionary purchases whose value depends on how often you will use them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are all 19 T+L carry-on products TSA-approved?
No. TSA does not provide a blanket approval for consumer products. Most ordinary personal items are generally permitted, but liquids, creams, batteries, and unusual items can require special handling. TSA may conduct additional screening, and the screening officer makes the final decision. Check the official TSA guidance before flying.
Can I bring an empty Owala bottle through airport security?
Yes. TSA lists empty water bottles and beverage containers as permitted. Empty the Owala before the checkpoint and refill it after security. The airline’s size and storage rules still determine whether it fits comfortably in your carry-on or personal item.
Can a power bank go in checked luggage?
No. Power banks and spare lithium batteries must remain in carry-on baggage. If your bag is gate-checked, remove the power bank and keep it with you in the cabin. Review the FAA lithium-battery rules and your airline’s policy.
Recommended Free Tools
Do I need compression socks for flying?
Not necessarily. Most travelers have a small risk of travel-related blood clots, but prolonged immobility and certain medical factors increase risk. Move your legs and walk periodically; ask a clinician whether graduated compression stockings are appropriate if you have risk factors.
Which T+L picks are best for a personal-item-only trip?
Prioritize a power bank, phone and cable, medication, an empty bottle, a small organizer, lip balm, and one compact audio or entertainment device. Leave behind the large Prince of Scots blanket, duplicate pillows, and bulky over-ear headphones unless they solve a specific need.
Do eye drops and tinted moisturizer count as liquids?
They may. Pack eye drops, tinted moisturizer, lip masks, and cream or balm cosmetics according to the applicable liquids rules. The standard U.S. limit is 3.4 ounces or 100 mL per container, with standard liquids fitting in one quart-size bag. Medically necessary liquids can receive different treatment when declared.
The Bottom Line
Pack the solution, not the entire roundup. Start with the power bank, empty bottle, medication, organizer, and one audio or entertainment option. Add a pillow, wrap, compression socks, or skin-care product only when it addresses a problem you actually have. Check your airline’s bag limits, keep power banks in the cabin, and verify product stock and pricing before buying.
