USDA time-use data identify 11 a.m. to 12:59 p.m. as a popular period on both weekdays and weekends, with another weekday peak from 3 to 3:59 p.m. These are national shopping patterns—not a live forecast of lines at your store—so treat them as a guide and check what works locally.
When is the grocery store most likely to be busy?
The strongest official national evidence points to late morning as a popular time to shop, especially on weekends. USDA Economic Research Service analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics American Time Use Survey diaries from 2014–17 found that 19.9% of weekend grocery shoppers shopped between 11 a.m. and 12:59 p.m. On weekdays, the same two-hour period and 3 to 3:59 p.m. were peak periods; 16% of weekday grocery shoppers shopped in each.

The study also found that 13% of Americans aged 15 and older grocery-shopped on an average weekday, compared with 16% on an average weekend. Those figures describe the share who reported grocery shopping on an average day, not how many people were in a particular store at once. What are the best times to try if you want to avoid crowds?
If your schedule is flexible, try a weekday outside the identified late-morning/noon and mid-afternoon peaks. This is a practical inference: the national data identify when shopping was popular, but do not rank every other hour or establish that a particular off-peak window is reliably quiet. The least busy time for your local store may depend on its hours, neighborhood, and shopping patterns.

Use the patterns as a starting point rather than a guarantee. Compare a couple of different open weekday periods at the same location, and keep the option that feels faster and easier for you.
Are weekends or Saturdays always the worst?
Weekends were somewhat more popular overall in the USDA analysis, and late morning was a weekend peak. A 2024 Drive Research survey report also describes a Saturday increase from 10 a.m. to 1:59 p.m., offering a newer directional indication of a late-morning-to-early-afternoon rush. It is a survey, not the same kind of nationally representative time-use evidence as the USDA series. See the Drive Research report.

Saturday is a useful day to watch, not a universal worst day. Historical Circana analysis during the first COVID-19 stay-at-home period found that the leading shopping day shifted: Saturday ranked first in five of 12 weeks, while Friday and Sunday each led in four. Those unusual pandemic-period results do not establish a current ranking of shopping days. Circana describes that period.

- Check the store’s open hours. National time-use patterns cannot tell you which hours a particular branch is open or when it is quiet.
- Avoid the known peaks first. If convenient, test a weekday period other than 11 a.m.–12:59 p.m. or 3–3:59 p.m.; those are the weekday peaks in the USDA analysis.
- Compare visits at the same location. Notice when checkout lines and parking are easier on more than one trip. This gives you a location-specific answer instead of relying only on a national average.
- Use live store information when available. A store’s own crowd indicator or local updates may be more relevant to today than older national time-use data.
The USDA estimates were based on Americans’ reported activities in 2014–17 and published in 2019. They measure whether people reported grocery shopping during a time period; they do not directly measure store occupancy, queue length, parking availability, or stock. They are useful context, not a live 2026 crowd forecast.

Would pickup or delivery help?
If avoiding an in-store visit matters more than choosing a quieter hour, pickup or delivery may be an alternative. USDA ERS has also analyzed online grocery shopping using nationally representative 2022 American Time Use Survey data, which establishes online shopping as a relevant option without identifying a particular merchant or service.
