APQP is a cross-functional automotive quality-planning approach for moving a project from concept toward launch while minimizing lead times and startup issues. For launch teams, the key update is that AIAG’s current APQP manual is the 3rd Edition, published in March 2024, and Control Plan guidance is now published separately in its own 1st Edition manual.
What is APQP?
Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) is an automotive approach for planning product quality as a project moves from concept toward launch. AIAG describes its purpose as minimizing lead times and startup issues. In practice, it brings connected launch decisions into view: customer needs, product and process risks, sourcing, changes, readiness evidence, and production controls.
APQP is not just a list of documents to complete. It provides a framework for coordinating work across functions and reviewing whether the project is ready to move forward. The detailed process, prescribed evidence, and acceptance criteria belong to the current controlled manual and applicable customer-specific requirements.
How does APQP help launch a product?
Launch problems often emerge when important decisions are disconnected—for example, a sourcing change is not reflected in risk work or production controls, or a readiness review misses an unresolved issue. APQP helps teams connect those decisions and make readiness visible before launch. AIAG’s stated goal is to reduce lead times and startup issues; its public summary does not establish a quantified reduction or guarantee a particular outcome.

A cross-functional team should make ownership visible for the work relevant to its program. The right roster depends on the organization, product, and customer requirements; AIAG’s public summary does not prescribe a universal team list.
What changed in APQP 3rd Edition?
AIAG published the APQP 3rd Edition in March 2024 (product code APQP-3). Its updates broaden attention beyond deliverables to the management of a changing launch program.
- Agile product management: addresses the need to manage product development as conditions evolve.
- Sourcing and change management: brings supplier-related decisions and changes into launch planning.
- Program metrics and gated management: supports monitoring progress and reviewing readiness at defined points.
- Risk assessment and mitigation plans: emphasizes identifying risks and planning responses.
- Part traceability, checklists, and analytical techniques: includes these areas in the updated guidance.
These are areas identified by AIAG, not a substitute for the manual’s prescribed steps, forms, thresholds, or gate evidence. Teams should use the licensed current manual and customer requirements to determine exactly what is required for a live program.

Is the Control Plan part of APQP?
Control planning remains connected to APQP, but the documents are now separate. AIAG removed Control Plan content from the APQP manual and issued a standalone Control Plan 1st Edition. The separate publication explains its links to APQP, use of control plans, and related best practices. AIAG says separating the documents also emphasizes Control Plans’ importance in product development and makes timely updates easier as systems evolve.

The practical implication is to align planning and risk analysis with the controls used to manage production and the launch period. Do not interpret the separate publication as meaning a launch team no longer needs a Control Plan.
When do we use the Control Plan?
Use Control Plan guidance as part of planning how production will be controlled, including the launch period. AIAG’s Control Plan 1st Edition highlights a Safe Launch requirement in control plan phases and includes examples for highly automated manufacturing. The exact applicable phases and required content depend on the current manual and customer-specific requirements.

Keep the control plan aligned with the risks and decisions tracked in APQP. When product, process, sourcing, or other program conditions change, determine whether the plan and related evidence need updating under the applicable requirements.

- Make ownership and timing visible. Coordinate the functions responsible for customer needs, product and process planning, sourcing, risk actions, production controls, and readiness evidence.
- Connect changes to risk and controls. Review whether sourcing or program changes affect risk assessments, mitigation actions, timing, or the production control plan.
- Use metrics and gated reviews to expose unresolved issues. Consult the current manual and customer requirements for the formal gates, measures, and evidence; do not invent thresholds based on a summary.
- Maintain traceability. Apply the relevant traceability guidance and checklists, and use analytical techniques as required for the program.
- Align production controls and Safe Launch. Use the standalone Control Plan guidance alongside applicable customer requirements.
- Confirm the required edition and evidence package. Verify the live customer-specific requirements before setting a gate, submission, or approval date.
Which edition and requirements apply to a program?
AIAG stated that APQP 3rd Edition and Control Plan 1st Edition implementation was required by GM and Stellantis as of September 1, 2024, and by Ford as of December 31, 2024. Those milestones describe AIAG’s stated implementation dates for those automakers; they do not establish that every customer, contract, plant, or geography uses identical requirements.

AIAG lists hard-copy and single-user e-document formats and multiple language offerings on its publication pages; availability can vary by market and should be checked on the current listing. AIAG also lists APQP and Control Plan training for teams seeking help understanding and adopting the approach. Training does not replace the manuals or customer-specific requirements.
