The U.S. Air Force selected Boeing in March 2025 to develop its Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) fighter, designated the F-47. The decision is already made; the current story is the aircraft’s planned development, schedule and funding—not a competition to choose a developer this year.
Who is building the F-47?
Boeing won the Air Force’s F-47 development selection, announced March 21, 2025. The award covers development of the NGAD fighter. The Air Force has not announced a current contest between developers for this contract. The Air Force announcement describes Boeing’s selection.
How the F-47 program developed
The selection followed a decade of research into air dominance. DARPA traces its involvement to a 2014 Air Dominance Initiative study that led to its Aerospace Innovation Initiative. Under DARPA research and development contracts, Boeing and Lockheed Martin designed two X-planes to reduce risk for the NGAD platform. DARPA says the aircraft first flew in 2019 and 2022 and logged several hundred flight hours each. That research history does not establish that the two companies were the final competitors for the F-47 development award. DARPA’s account of the X-plane work provides the program background.
What the Air Force expects the F-47 to do
The F-47 is intended to be the Air Force’s next air-superiority fighter and to replace the F-22 in the air-superiority and interceptor roles. It is also expected to operate alongside Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA), unmanned aircraft intended to perform autonomous offensive and defensive roles. These are planned roles, not evidence that the F-47 or its associated aircraft have demonstrated operational capabilities. Stars and Stripes’ coverage of the program plans describes the expected relationship with CCA.

When is the F-47 expected to fly?
Stars and Stripes reported on August 3, 2026, that the Air Force planned the F-47’s first flight for 2028 and intended to acquire 185 Boeing-built aircraft. Both figures describe service plans, not completed milestones or guaranteed outcomes; schedules and procurement quantities can change. Gen. Dale White, director of Critical Major Weapon Systems, said in remarks reported after a July 29, 2026 speech, “The F-47 will fly in this administration.” That statement is a public expectation, not confirmation that a flight has occurred.
What the published budget figures mean
Reported F-47 funding figures refer to different fiscal years and budget statuses. A request or projection is not the same as an enacted appropriation or money already spent.

| Fiscal year | Reported amount | Status and source |
|---|---|---|
| FY2026 | $3.45 billion | Air & Space Forces Association reported this figure from Air Force budget documents as FY2026 spending. Its May 2026 budget account says the F-47 engineering, manufacturing and development (EMD) chart figures were redacted. |
| FY2027 | $5.03 billion | Stars and Stripes reported this as the Air Force’s FY2027 F-47 budget request. The August 2026 report describes a request, not an enacted appropriation. |
| FY2027 | $5.04 billion | Air & Space Forces Association reported this as the FY2027 request in its account of Air Force budget documents. The same account says the EMD budget chart figures were redacted. |
| FY2028 | $5.25 billion | Air & Space Forces Association reported this as a projection, not an enacted appropriation. |
The two FY2027 reports give slightly different request figures: $5.03 billion and $5.04 billion. They should be attributed to their respective reports rather than treated as one exact, independently confirmed amount.

The cited public reporting does not establish detailed F-47 design specifications or final operational capabilities. It does not support claims about exact performance, survivability, classified features or readiness. Those limits matter when interpreting plans for a new aircraft: a development award and projected schedule do not by themselves demonstrate what the finished fighter will be able to do.
