HelloFresh: broad meal-kit appeal
Food Network names HelloFresh its best overall service for most people, while Reviewed calls it the best overall meal kit. Reviewed highlights recipe variety and the “Quick & Easy” label for simpler cooking. It is a reasonable starting point if you want familiar meal-kit structure and many recipe choices, but the recurring total must be checked after shipping and any introductory discount expires.
Dinnerly: a value-first kit
Reviewed identifies Dinnerly as best value and reports meals starting at $4.99 per serving; NBC Select places it near the $5-per-serving budget tier. That makes it a candidate for reducing ingredient-planning costs when you are willing to cook. Starting prices are publisher-reported and may change, and a low per-serving figure does not include every checkout charge.

How to compare the real cost
- Price the recurring order. Record the standard per-serving price after any introductory offer, not just the first-box promotion.
- Add unavoidable charges. Include shipping, taxes and any required minimum order. The final checkout screen is the authoritative figure for your ZIP code.
- Divide by meals you will use. A four-serving order is not a bargain if two portions go uneaten. Include leftovers and household size in the calculation.
- Value your time honestly. For kits, account for chopping, cooking and cleanup. For prepared meals, account for reheating and storage rather than assuming zero effort.
- Check cancellation mechanics. Before subscribing, locate the skip, pause and cancel controls and the cutoff time for the next shipment.
NBC Select says its recommended services took less than an hour to prepare or under 10 minutes to heat. That is a publisher test observation, not a guarantee for every recipe or household.
Diet, customization and safety checks
- Use menu filters to narrow choices, then read the complete ingredient and allergen statement for the individual meal.
- Do not treat “gluten-free,” vegan or another filter as medical-grade allergen safety unless the provider explicitly describes its controls.
- Check whether substitutions are allowed, whether recipes are fixed, and whether the service can accommodate the number of servings your household needs.
- Confirm delivery coverage and packaging requirements for your address; availability can differ by region and can change.
What the reviewers actually tested
Food Network says it tested and researched 17 companies. NBC Select says its editors tested services and consulted chefs and nutritionists. Reviewed describes years of testing more than a dozen meal kits. Those are the publishers’ methods; they are not a claim that this article independently tested every box.
MealFan reports more than 50 services and 800-plus orders since 2019 (reported August 2026). Its 2026 scoring weights food quality at 30%, value 25%, menu variety 20%, ease of use 15% and customer support 10%. MealFan also discloses commissions on some recommendations, so its scores should be read as that publisher’s methodology rather than an industry standard.
As recipe developer and cookbook author Daniel Shumski told NBC Select: “So many meal kits and delivery services offer great introductory prices — it’s worth trying around to find one that fits your taste and budget,” he says.
Are meal delivery services worth it?
They can be worth the money when the service replaces costs you would otherwise incur—grocery trips, food waste, planning time or takeout—and when you will use the delivered portions. They are less compelling when shipping and unused servings erase the advertised per-serving savings, or when your dietary and delivery requirements narrow the menu too far. Run one full-price order through the cost-and-time steps above, then decide whether to continue.
