Match insulation and breathability to activity
For high-output exercise, prioritize breathability and a secure fit so excess heat and moisture can escape. For commuting or standing outdoors, ear coverage and insulation may matter more. A hat that feels cozy at rest can become uncomfortable during strenuous activity if it traps too much heat. Travel + Leisure’s guidance favors merino for active use, cashmere for style, and fleece for extreme cold, but those are broad material pointers—not guarantees of how a particular hat performs.

Check coverage, fit, and adjustability
Consider whether you need ear coverage, face coverage, or room for a ponytail. A cuff can extend coverage, while an adjustable band or drawcord can help tailor fit. “One size” does not mean one fit works for everyone: check the brand’s size guide and customer reviews, especially if you have a larger or smaller head or want to wear the hat over another layer.
Think about travel, weight, and care
If a hat will live in a commuter bag or suitcase, packability and resistance to losing its shape matter alongside listed weight. Travel + Leisure favors compact merino styles for packing, but the listed weights are not a packing-volume comparison. Care can also affect convenience: always follow the product’s own care label. The guide says wool and cashmere are often hand-wash and flat-dry; merino and fleece may allow cold or delicate machine washing but generally should not be tumble-dried; cotton and acrylic may tolerate warmer washing and low tumble drying. These are general tendencies, not instructions for every item.

The guide does not state exact test dates, controlled temperature ranges, or a formal scoring protocol, so its picks are best understood as editorial recommendations based on reported real-world use rather than standardized lab rankings.
The guide also corrects the common claim that people lose most of their body heat through the head: heat loss depends on exposed skin across the body, and the text provides neither a numerical share nor a named study. A hat can still make a meaningful comfort difference by covering exposed skin in cold weather.
