The useful choice is the right type for the cause: corticosteroid or antihistamine sprays for allergy symptoms, decongestant sprays for brief relief of stuffiness, and saline for moisture and mucus support. These options are not interchangeable, and not every stuffy or runny nose is caused by allergies.
Choose a spray by symptom and likely cause
For allergic rhinitis, MedlinePlus describes nasal corticosteroid sprays as the most effective treatment and says antihistamine nasal sprays work well. A topical decongestant has a different role: short-term relief of nasal stuffiness. Saline is nonmedicated support for moisture or mucus removal, not a substitute for medicine when medicine is appropriate.

| Spray type | Best fit | How to think about use | Key caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nasal corticosteroid | Allergy-related inflammation and symptoms, including congestion | Use regularly as directed; improvement may take time | Possible effects include nasal stinging and nosebleeds |
| Antihistamine nasal spray | Allergic rhinitis symptoms | Follow the specific product’s directions | Availability and prescription status vary by product and jurisdiction |
| Topical decongestant | Temporary relief of stuffiness | Use only for the short period stated on its label | Longer use can worsen congestion through rebound effect |
| Saline spray or wash | Mild symptoms, moisture, or loosening and removing mucus | Nonmedicated symptom support | For a home wash, use distilled water or water that has been boiled and cooled |
1. Nasal corticosteroid sprays: a regular-use option for allergies
For allergic rhinitis, MedlinePlus says nasal corticosteroid sprays are the most effective treatment. They reduce inflammation and can address allergy symptoms, including nasal congestion, according to the FDA’s allergy-medication guidance.
These are not instant decongestants. MedlinePlus says they work best with regular use and may take two or more weeks of steady use to improve symptoms. Follow the label for the specific product rather than using an occasional dose as if it were a quick-acting congestion spray.

Possible side effects include nasal stinging and nosebleeds, the FDA notes. Read the product’s Drug Facts label and use it as directed.
2. Antihistamine nasal sprays: for allergy symptoms
MedlinePlus says antihistamine nasal sprays work well for allergic rhinitis. They target allergy symptoms, not every cause of nasal congestion or drainage. If symptoms do not seem allergy-related, a different approach may be more appropriate.

Which products are available without a prescription, their age limits, and their directions depend on the product and location. Check the current label or ask a pharmacist before choosing.
3. Topical decongestant sprays: short-term stuffiness relief
These sprays are intended to relieve stuffiness, not to treat allergy inflammation over time. The FDA warns that using decongestant nose sprays for more than a few days may cause a rebound effect, in which congestion gets worse. MedlinePlus advises not using them for more than three days in a row.
Rank #3
- ACTIVE INGREDIENT: This nasal spray contains oxymetazoline hydrochloride 0.05%, a nasal decongestant that compares to the active ingredient in Afrin Original
- PURPOSE: This nasal spray temporarily relieves nasal congestion, sinus congestion and pressure due to the common cold, hay fever and upper respiratory allergies

Use the shorter limit if the product label is more restrictive, and do not keep spraying because congestion returns. If you have already used a decongestant spray longer than directed, ask a healthcare professional or pharmacist how to proceed rather than extending use.
4. Saline sprays and washes: nonmedicated symptom support
Saline spray can add moisture and support mild stuffy or runny-nose symptoms; a wash can help remove mucus. MedlinePlus includes store-bought saline spray in self-care guidance. Saline is not an allergy medicine or a replacement for medication when medication is needed.

- Identify the job. For suspected allergy symptoms, compare corticosteroid and antihistamine sprays. For brief stuffiness relief, consider whether a topical decongestant’s strict short-term limit fits. For moisture or mucus support, consider saline.
- Check the active ingredient and category. Do not assume all sprays labeled for congestion work the same way; identify whether the product is a corticosteroid, antihistamine, topical decongestant, or saline.
- Read the current Drug Facts label. Confirm age directions, dose, duration, ingredients, warnings, and whether the product is appropriate for you. FDA advises using OTC products according to their labels.
- Ask a pharmacist or clinician when uncertain. Product availability and prescription status differ by product and jurisdiction, and symptoms alone may not establish their cause.
When to get professional advice
The FDA’s OTC label guidance recommends seeking professional help if congestion does not improve within seven days or occurs with fever. Ask sooner if you are unsure which spray is suitable or how to use it safely.

Why this is a guide to spray types, not seven ranked brands
A brand ranking requires current product-label checks and a defensible way to compare products. The available sources establish useful categories and safety guidance, but do not establish seven current brands as the best, compare their performance head to head, or verify their current prices and availability. For that reason, choosing by ingredient, intended use, and label is more reliable than an unsupported numbered brand list.
