For most households, the Canon MegaTank PIXMA G3290 is a low-cost way to get high-yield color printing; for a home office, the Epson EcoTank ET-3950 adds useful duplex scanning and a larger paper tray. Choose the Epson ET-5850 for heavy document workloads or the ET-8550 for wide-format photos, and compare replacement-ink costs against your actual printing needs.
A printer’s sticker price is only the first expense. The recurring cost comes from ink, wasted paper, maintenance cycles, and the features you may need to replace later. Refillable-tank printers generally cost more upfront than cartridge models, but their included and replacement bottles can cover thousands of pages.
These are five choices for keeping long-term printing costs under control in 2026. The picks are based on verified ink-yield claims, printer features, and the type of work each model handles best. Published yields are estimates, not guarantees: photos, page coverage, print quality, maintenance, and black-and-white settings all affect actual consumption.

1. Canon MegaTank PIXMA G3290: best budget all-in-one
The Canon PIXMA G3290 is a straightforward choice for households, students, and occasional home users who want to stop buying small cartridges. It prints, copies, and scans, uses refillable Canon GI-21 bottles, and supports automatic two-sided printing.
#1 Best Overall
- INNOVATIVE CARTRIDGE-FREE PRINTING — No more dealing with tiny, expensive ink cartridges; With this wireless printer each ink bottle set is equivalent to about 80 individual cartridges²
- LESS FREQUENT INK REPLACEMENT — Replacement ink bottles don't have to be changed nearly as often as ink cartridges¹; Color printer lets you print up to 4,500 black and white pages and 7,200 color³
- PRINT FOR LONGER — Up to 2 years of ink in the box⁴ (and with every replacement ink set) for fewer out-of-ink frustrations; This home printer keeps printing longer
- HIGH CAPACITY INK TANKS – Printer, scanner and copier utilizes Epson’s exclusive EcoFit ink bottles, making the refill process easy and worry-free
- ZERO CARTRIDGE WASTE — By using an Epson EcoTank printer you can help reduce the amount of cartridge waste ending up in landfills; Cartridge-free printer utilizes ink bottles for more convenience and less waste
Canon rates a replacement set at up to 6,000 black-and-white pages and 7,700 color pages in Default mode. Canon’s Economy mode figures are up to 7,600 black pages and 8,100 color pages. These are estimates based on Canon’s test methodology, not personal guarantees. A document with full-page graphics will use more ink than a lightly covered letter. (Canon G3290 specifications)
The G3290 has a 100-sheet rear tray, a 2.7-inch LCD, Wi-Fi on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, Wi-Fi Direct, and a flatbed scanner. Canon rates color print speed at approximately 6.0 images per minute. The significant compromise is the lack of an automatic document feeder: scanning or copying a multi-page packet means placing each sheet on the glass individually. (Canon G3290 specifications)
One budgeting detail is easy to miss: the first bottles may produce less than a normal replacement set because ink is consumed while the printhead is charged during setup. (Canon product information)
Best for: a family or student who needs inexpensive everyday color printing and does not regularly process multi-page documents.
2. Epson EcoTank ET-3950: best home-office value
The Epson EcoTank ET-3950 is a practical home-office machine and the current successor to the ET-3850. Epson rates its replacement bottles for up to 8,500 black pages and 6,500 color pages. Its 250-sheet tray means fewer interruptions than the Canon’s 100-sheet rear feed. (Epson ET-3950 product page; Epson announcement)
Epson rates it at 18 ISO pages per minute in black and 9 ISO pages per minute in color. Automatic duplex printing reduces paper use, while the automatic document feeder supports multi-page copying and automatic two-sided scanning. That combination matters financially: saving paper and reducing manual handling can be more valuable than chasing the lowest bottle price. (Epson ET-3950 product page)

- FULLY LOADED WITH SAVINGS – Best for low-cost, high-volume printing—up to 3 years of HP Ink included; get up to 6,000 color or black pages right out of the box
- KEY FEATURES – Print, copy and scan, plus borderless prints, mobile and wireless printing
- MESS-FREE REFILL – Replenish ink with HP's easy-access, mess-free refill system; simply plug the ink bottles into this cartridge-free ink tank and let them drain—no squeezing, no spilling
- BEST PRINT QUALITY, PERIOD – Sharper text, richer colors, only with HP Smart Tank
The ET-3950 has a 2.4-inch color display and supports Wi-Fi, USB, Apple AirPrint, and Epson Smart Panel. Its EcoFit bottles use keyed tips designed to reduce the chance of pouring ink into the wrong tank. (Epson ET-3950 product page)
The tradeoff is the purchase price. A cartridge printer may be cheaper at checkout, especially when discounted, but the ET-3950 is aimed at buyers who print often enough for high-yield bottles to offset that initial premium. Epson’s published yields can vary with coverage, print settings, humidity, and maintenance.

3. Brother MFC-T780DW: best Brother refillable-tank printer
The Brother MFC-T780DW is a sensible option for people who prefer Brother’s document-oriented software and workflow but do not want conventional disposable cartridges. It is a wireless, duplex-capable all-in-one in Brother’s INKvestment Tank range. (Brother MFC-T780DW product page)
Brother lists the supplied starter black bottles at a combined approximate yield of 14,625 pages, while the starter cyan, magenta, and yellow bottles are rated at approximately 4,400 pages. For replacement color ink, Brother’s BTD180 cyan, magenta, and yellow three-pack is rated for up to 5,000 pages per bottle. (Brother MFC-T780DW product page; Brother BTD180 replacement bottles)
Do not combine those figures into a simplistic cost-per-page calculation. Brother’s starter black yield and replacement-bottle yields are not presented on directly interchangeable terms. Before estimating annual expenses, check the rating for the replacement black bottle as well as the bottle price available for your model.

4. Epson EcoTank Pro ET-5850: best for heavy office workloads
The Epson EcoTank Pro ET-5850 is a productivity pick. It is a four-color, all-pigment multifunction printer with print, copy, scan, fax, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet. Epson rates it at 25 ISO pages per minute in both black and color, with two-sided printing rated at 21 ISO pages per minute. (Epson ET-5850 product page)
Two 250-sheet front trays provide 500 sheets of capacity, and a rear feed handles specialty media. Epson rates its 542 replacement bottles at up to 7,500 black pages and 6,000 color pages. Epson lists replacement ink at approximately 2 cents per ISO color page under its stated comparison method. (Epson ET-5850 product page)

Best for: a small business or busy home office printing large volumes of documents and needing Ethernet, capacity, and speed.
5. Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550: best for inexpensive wide-format photos
The ET-8550 is the specialist pick for photographers, crafters, and artists. It prints borderless photos and artwork up to 13 by 19 inches, uses six-color Claria ET Premium ink, and includes a rear straight-through feed for thicker media. (Epson ET-8550 announcement)
Epson rates replacement ink for up to 6,700 black document pages and 6,200 color document pages. For photos, Epson estimates approximately 4 cents per 4-by-6-inch photo using its stated comparison method. (Epson ET-8550 announcement)
The six-color setup includes black, photo black, cyan, magenta, yellow, and gray. The additional colors are useful for photographic gradients and tonal detail, but they also mean that replacement supplies are not directly comparable with a standard four-color printer. You are paying for a photo-focused system, not simply the cheapest way to print text.
The ET-8550 prints, copies, and scans and supports Ethernet and wireless connections. It does not have an automatic document feeder, and it is less suited to high-volume office documents than the ET-5850. (Epson ET-8550 product page)
Best for: anyone printing photos, art, or wide-format graphics often enough to justify a higher initial purchase.

How to choose based on your total cost
- Estimate your real monthly volume. Separate black-and-white documents, color documents, and photos. A printer rated for thousands of pages may be poor value if you print only a few pages each month.
- Compare the replacement bottles, not just the printer. Check the bottle price, stated yield, number of colors, and whether the manufacturer uses the same test method across products.
- Account for paper. Automatic duplex printing can reduce paper consumption. A larger tray can also prevent last-minute purchases at retail prices.
- Pay for features you will actually use. Choose an ADF for multi-page scanning, Ethernet for a stable office connection, and wide-format support only if you genuinely print larger media.
- Plan for maintenance. Ink tanks can clog after long periods unused. Run the manufacturer’s nozzle-check and cleaning procedures rather than repeatedly replacing parts or abandoning the printer.
What “cheap ink” does not mean
- Published yields are standardized estimates. Heavy graphics, photos, print quality, temperature, humidity, and cleaning cycles can change the result. (Epson yield information)
- Setup ink is not always equivalent to replacement ink. Initial filling and printhead charging consume some of the supplied ink. (Canon product information)
- Black-only printing may still use color ink. Epson states that all ink colors are used for printing and printer maintenance, and monochrome printing can use color ink depending on the model and settings. (Epson yield information)
- Ink-tank printers still require maintenance. On the Epson ET-8550, the relevant path is Maintenance > Print Head Nozzle Check. If the pattern has gaps, Epson instructs users to clean the printhead. (Epson maintenance instructions)
- Waste-ink components eventually fill. On ET-3950-series models, borderless printing can fill the borderless-printing ink pad. Epson says replacement may require an authorized service provider. (Epson ET-3950-series user guide)
- Third-party ink creates a warranty risk. Canon excludes damage caused by non-Canon or refilled ink, and Epson and Brother likewise recommend genuine supplies and warn that non-genuine ink damage may not be covered. (Canon G3290 support)
Which one should you buy?
Choose the Canon G3290 if your priority is a low-cost color all-in-one and you can live without an ADF. Choose the Epson ET-3950 for the strongest balance of home-office features and bottle yield. The Brother MFC-T780DW is the best fit for buyers committed to Brother’s refillable-tank ecosystem.
For a busy office, the Epson ET-5850 justifies its higher entry cost with speed, capacity, pigment documents, and Ethernet. For photos and 13-by-19-inch artwork, the Epson ET-8550 is the specialized value choice, provided you print enough creative work to use its six-color system.
FAQ
Are printers with refillable tanks cheaper than cartridge printers?
They usually have a higher purchase price but much lower ongoing ink costs when you print regularly. The savings are strongest for households and offices that produce substantial color volume. If you print only a handful of pages each month, the upfront premium may not pay back quickly.
Which printer has the cheapest ink in this list?
There is no single universal winner because the printers use different ink systems and yield tests. The Canon G3290 has high published yields for a budget all-in-one, while Epson lists approximately 2 cents per ISO color page for the ET-5850 under its stated comparison method. Compare bottle prices and yields for the type of pages you actually print.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo ink-tank printers dry out or clog?
They can, particularly when left unused for long periods. Dust, debris, and dried ink can cause missing colors, white lines, or blank pages. Use the manufacturer’s nozzle-check and printhead-cleaning process, and avoid leaving the machine unplugged for extended periods. (Brother troubleshooting guidance)
Is the Epson ET-8550 a good general home-office printer?
It can handle ordinary printing, but it is primarily a photo and wide-format model. Its six-color ink system and lack of an ADF make it less practical for routine office documents than the Epson ET-3950 or ET-5850. Choose it when photo, art, or large-format output is the main reason to buy.
The Bottom Line
For most budget-conscious households, the Canon MegaTank PIXMA G3290 offers a straightforward route to high-yield color printing. The Epson EcoTank ET-3950 is the more capable home-office investment, while the ET-5850 is better when speed and volume matter. Buy the ET-8550 for photos and wide-format work, not simply because its ink is inexpensive.
Whichever model you choose, calculate total cost from replacement ink, paper use, maintenance, and your actual print volume—not from the printer’s purchase price or the largest headline page-yield number.
