2025 is over, so these products are no longer upcoming. The five Apple launches that generated the strongest combination of buyer interest, strategic importance and credible release evidence were the iPhone 17 family, MacBook Air with M4, iPhone 16e, iPad Air with M3 and Mac Studio with M3 Ultra.
This is a retrospective for anyone deciding whether one of these devices is still worth buying, upgrading to or considering against an older model. U.S. launch prices are identified where verified; current prices, trade-in values and carrier promotions can differ by country and date.
How this list was chosen
“Look forward to” can mean novelty, usefulness or sheer mainstream importance. This ranking weighs five factors: pre-launch reader interest, evidence that Apple would actually ship the product in 2025, the scale of the change, its practical importance to buyers and the distinct audience it served.
That distinction matters. Apple’s 2025 rumor coverage included possible products such as a smart-home hub, foldable iPhone, smart glasses, updated Apple TV and new HomePod models. Those were not all confirmed, and several were uncertain or potentially delayed. MacRumors’ January 2025 roundup illustrates why rumor lists should not be treated as launch schedules.

1. iPhone 17 family, particularly the iPhone Air
The iPhone 17 line was the year’s most consequential Apple launch because the iPhone remains the company’s central mainstream product category. Apple announced the family on September 9, 2025, including the standard iPhone 17, Pro models and the new iPhone Air. Apple’s announcement positioned the Air around thinness and light weight rather than simply placing another model into the existing range.
The Air was the clearest product-positioning change in this list. It appealed to buyers who cared more about a slimmer, easier-to-carry phone than about having every Pro-level capability. That makes it interesting, but not automatically the best iPhone. A buyer who prioritizes camera flexibility, battery capacity, speakers, durability or maximum performance may have stronger reasons to choose a standard or Pro model.
Who should choose which model?
- Choose the standard iPhone 17 if you want the mainstream balance of price, features and everyday performance.
- Choose the iPhone Air if thinness and portability are the primary reasons to upgrade and you accept possible compromises in capability.
- Choose an iPhone 17 Pro if cameras, battery life, display features and maximum performance matter more than minimizing thickness.
Verdict: The iPhone Air was the year’s most attention-grabbing design experiment, while the standard iPhone 17 was likely the safer all-round choice. Existing iPhone owners should upgrade only for a meaningful need—such as a new form factor, camera improvement, battery requirement or aging hardware—not merely because the model is newer.

2. MacBook Air with M4
Apple announced the M4 MacBook Air on March 5, 2025. Its main change was the move to the M4 chip, accompanied by a new sky-blue finish, while the familiar fanless Air design remained broadly intact. Apple’s 2025 newsroom archive confirms the announcement.

For ordinary buyers, this may have been more important than the technically faster products lower on the list. The MacBook Air is a practical default for students, office workers, developers with moderate needs, families and creators whose work does not require a workstation. M4 performance and efficiency make it a strong general-purpose option, but the chip alone does not erase the Air’s product boundaries.
What to consider before buying
- The fanless design is quiet, but sustained heavy workloads may be better suited to a MacBook Pro with active cooling.
- The Air’s port selection and display capabilities are more limited than a Pro model’s, so check your monitor, dock and peripheral requirements.
- Recent M2 or M3 Air owners may see an incremental rather than transformative improvement unless they need more performance, memory, a particular configuration or a resale opportunity.
- Owners of older Intel Macs, or buyers replacing a much older computer, have a stronger reason to consider the M4 Air.
Verdict: The M4 MacBook Air was the strongest value-oriented Apple computer for many mainstream buyers, but “new chip” should not be confused with a completely new laptop. Compare the configured memory and storage price, not just the base model.

3. iPhone 16e
Apple announced the iPhone 16e on February 19, 2025, and made it available on February 28. Its U.S. launch price started at $599, with 128GB, 256GB and 512GB configurations. Apple’s launch release lists its A18 chip, Apple Intelligence support, 6.1-inch OLED display, 48MP two-in-one camera system, USB-C, Face ID and satellite-related safety features.
The 16e was the spiritual successor to the iPhone SE line, even though Apple used a new name. It brought a current processor and modern design features to a lower price tier, and introduced Apple’s first C1 cellular modem. It was not, however, a low-priced version of an iPhone Pro.

The compromises behind the lower price
Buyers should check whether they need premium camera features, a larger display, or other capabilities available on more expensive iPhones. Apple also described the 16e as offering its best battery life in an iPhone of its size; that is Apple’s claim and should not be treated as an independent test result.
Apple Intelligence availability was dependent on language, region, operating-system version and feature rollout. Compatible hardware did not mean every feature was available everywhere or immediately. Check Apple’s current regional and language information before buying.

Verdict: The iPhone 16e was one of 2025’s clearest value propositions for buyers who wanted a modern iPhone without paying flagship prices. It was a poor fit for buyers whose priority was a Pro camera system or the full flagship feature set.
Check current iPhone pricing at Apple, and keep the $599 figure separate from current pricing, trade-in credits and carrier promotions.
4. iPad Air with M3
Apple announced the iPad Air with M3 on March 4, 2025, alongside a new Magic Keyboard. The update put a newer Apple-silicon chip in the midrange iPad, between the entry-level iPad and iPad Pro. The announcement appears in Apple’s 2025 newsroom archive.

The M3 iPad Air made sense for people who wanted a flexible tablet for note-taking, study, drawing, media, light creative work and occasional keyboard use. It did not automatically become a laptop replacement. Whether it can replace a computer depends on the software you use, how much multitasking you need, your external-display requirements and your tolerance for iPadOS limitations.
Budget for the complete setup
- Compare Wi-Fi and cellular versions rather than assuming cellular connectivity is necessary.
- Include the Magic Keyboard if you expect laptop-style typing.
- Include a compatible Apple Pencil if handwriting or drawing is part of the plan.
- Check storage carefully; adding accessories and storage can move the total cost toward a MacBook Air.
- Owners of an M1 or M2 iPad Air may not gain enough from the M3 chip to justify an upgrade, while owners of older iPads may see a more meaningful improvement.
Verdict: The M3 iPad Air was a sensible middle ground, but its value depended heavily on whether you wanted a tablet or were trying to build a laptop substitute. Price the full system, not just the tablet.

Apple announced the 2025 Mac Studio on March 5, including the M3 Ultra. Apple described it as its most powerful Mac, a positioning claim aimed at professional users rather than a universal value recommendation. The 2025 newsroom archive confirms the launch.
The target audience included video editors, 3D artists, software developers, scientists, audio professionals and others with sustained, demanding workloads. Those buyers may benefit from more memory, storage, external-display support and professional software optimization. For everyone else, the Mac Studio is likely unnecessary capacity.

Remember that the computer is only part of the workstation
The desktop-only design means you may also need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, webcam, speakers, dock and specialist storage. Configuration upgrades can materially increase the price. A Mac mini may be the better value for lighter workloads; a MacBook Pro may make more sense if you need mobility; and a Mac Pro may be relevant when expansion requirements justify it.
Verdict: The M3 Ultra Mac Studio was the specialist highlight of 2025, not the default Mac recommendation. Buy it because your software and workload can use its capacity—not because Apple’s maximum chip tier is automatically the best value.

What did not make the list?
Rumors about a foldable iPhone, smart glasses, a smart-home hub, AirTag refresh, Apple TV update, new HomePod mini and lower-cost Vision headset generated interest, but interest was not the same as a confirmed 2025 launch. Some were uncertain, delayed or discussed as possible 2026 products. Their omission here does not mean they were unimportant; it means the evidence was not strong enough to rank them alongside products Apple actually announced and shipped in 2025.

Which 2025 Apple product was worth waiting for?
- Best mainstream upgrade: iPhone 17 for buyers who needed a new phone, with the Air appealing specifically to thinness-focused buyers.
- Best lower-cost iPhone: iPhone 16e, provided its missing premium features were acceptable.
- Best laptop for most people: MacBook Air with M4, especially for older Mac owners and general-purpose users.
- Best midrange tablet: iPad Air with M3, provided the accessory-inclusive price remained sensible.
- Best professional desktop: Mac Studio with M3 Ultra for workloads that genuinely benefit from workstation-class performance.
- Best reason not to upgrade: A recent Apple-silicon MacBook Air or iPad Air owner with no specific need for more performance, memory, storage or a new form factor.
Keep the total cost in view
A device’s advertised starting price is only one part of the decision. For iPhones, separate the U.S. launch MSRP from trade-in credits, carrier installments and promotional “up to” savings. For iPads, add the keyboard and Pencil if they are necessary to your workflow. For Mac Studio, add the display and peripherals. AppleCare+ may be more relevant for expensive, portable devices, but it should be treated as an optional cost rather than assumed value.
