The 42 Best Toys for 1-Year-Olds, According to Parents and Experts

First-birthday toys work best when they meet a child where they are: stacking blocks, pushing a ride-on, naming pictures in a sturdy book, or copying everyday routines in pretend play. Start with safety and the manufacturer’s age grade, then choose the kind of hands-on play your child is ready to enjoy.

First-birthday toys are most useful when they meet the child in front of you: something to stack and knock down, a sturdy book to name together, a vehicle to push, or a pretend object that mirrors everyday life. A toy does not need to promise “learning” to be worthwhile, and no particular toy is required for a child to reach a milestone. The better test is whether it is safe, correctly age-graded, manageable in your space, and interesting enough for shared hands-on play.

Parents’ current roundup presents 42 individual product entries, although its live headline currently says “41 Best Toys.” The guide below preserves the 42-item product inventory while treating it as a starting point—not an independent safety endorsement or a claim that every item suits every child who has turned one.

How to choose a toy for a 1-year-old

“One year old” covers a substantial developmental range. Around 15 months, some children may be beginning to walk independently, use familiar objects appropriately, stack two objects, follow a gesture-supported direction, or hug a stuffed animal. Those are examples of emerging interests, not a checklist; CDC milestone materials are not a substitute for developmental screening.

Choose for the play action, rather than a marketing promise:

  • Hands and problem-solving: large blocks, stackers, sorters, knobs, and simple turn/push/drop actions.
  • Words and shared attention: board books, picture naming, and simple interactive toys used with an adult.
  • Pretend and imitation: dolls, animals, household objects, kitchens, and large-scale play sets.
  • Movement: push toys, ride-ons, and climbers only when the age grade, setup, floor space, and supervision all fit.
  • Sound, texture, and manipulation: uncomplicated instruments, rattles, and objects that invite safe touching and repetition.

Before ordering any toy, confirm the exact model’s manufacturer age grade, every included loose component, dimensions, assembly requirements, battery needs, cleaning instructions, storage footprint, and current recall status. A toy can be well liked and still be a poor fit for a child who mouths components, a small apartment, or a household that wants quieter play.

Those are Parents’ editorial labels, not universal rankings. In particular, the LeapFrog book’s 18–48-month manufacturer grade takes priority over its inclusion in a broad one-year-old guide. If a product’s age grade or components do not fit your child now, choose another play format rather than buying ahead on the strength of a “best” label.

Safety checks that matter more than a “best toy” badge

  • Follow the package age range and your child’s current abilities. For children under 3, keep small balls and toys with small parts away. U.S. toy rules prohibit toys intended for under-threes from containing or releasing small parts after required testing, but that does not make a damaged, mixed-up, or older toy risk-free.
  • Open and inspect before play. Remove plastic wrap and packaging promptly. Check used, inherited, and heavily played-with toys for loose, broken, or detachable pieces.
  • Avoid button batteries and high-powered magnets. Do not rely on a broad category label such as “Montessori” as a safety signal. A June 25, 2026 CPSC recall covered the Small Fish Montessori Busy Board, model 2512JX02, after magnets could detach and create a potentially fatal ingestion hazard. That recall does not establish that the iHarPro board is recalled; it illustrates why the exact brand, model, and components must be checked.
  • Check the exact SKU against current CPSC recalls immediately before purchase or publication. A recall applies to the named product/model, not automatically to every busy board, magnetic toy, or brand.
  • Set up movement toys for the room you actually have. A push toy, rocker, slide, climber, or ride-on needs the manufacturer’s prescribed assembly and a clear, level, supervised play area. Do not buy an active-play toy on the assumption that it will be safe in any room.

A practical buying decision

  1. Start with one play need: building, books, pretend, movement, music, or simple manipulation.
  2. Match it to what your child already enjoys doing, while leaving a little room for new ways to use it.
  3. Read the exact manufacturer listing—not only a retailer card—for age grade, included pieces, batteries, dimensions, cleaning, and setup.
  4. Rule out hazards and mismatches: small or detachable parts, button batteries, magnets, insufficient floor space, or a child below the stated age.
  5. Prefer a toy you can use together. Naming pictures, taking turns, copying an everyday routine, or simply observing a child’s lead is often more valuable than an “educational” feature list.

Parents reports that its roundup drew on writer, toy-expert, and parent input, including interviews with pediatrician Natasha Burgert, MD, and Toy Association senior advisor Kristin Morency Goldman. It also discloses commerce relationships. Treat the list as useful product discovery, then make the final decision from current manufacturer instructions and official safety information.

Can I buy a toy early so my child can grow into it?

Not necessarily. A toy can be intended for an older child, contain pieces that do not fit your child’s current abilities, or require more space and supervision than your home allows. Follow the manufacturer’s age grade and instructions first.

The Bottom Line

The best toy for a one-year-old is not necessarily the most elaborate one. Buy the safe, correctly age-graded option that fits the child’s current interests, your space, and the kind of shared play your family will actually enjoy.
