Thoughtful, funny, and encouraging words for a retirement card, toast, or new chapter.
Retirement changes a work role, not a person’s capacity for curiosity, relationships, contribution, or joy. The right words can make a card feel personal, give a toast some lift, or help someone name a new beginning in their own way. Choose the tone that fits: celebratory, grateful, reflective, gently funny, or simply hopeful.

How to use a retirement quote
Pair one line with one true detail. Name what the person brought to the work—steady judgment, generosity, calm in a crisis, a gift for teaching, a memorable laugh—then add a forward-looking wish. For example: “Your steady counsel made difficult days easier. As Cicero put it, ‘He plants his trees to serve a race to come.’ May the next chapter give you time for everything you have been planting.”
Text links point to the historical editions used for these quotations. Public-domain status and reuse rules vary by country; Project Gutenberg specifically asks readers outside the United States to check their local law.
The Bottom Line
The strongest retirement message is not the most famous quote—it is the quote that sounds like the person, followed by one specific memory and a warm wish for what comes next.
