The 4 Major North American Sports Commissioners: What We Know About Their Wealth

The four major North American sports commissioners are Roger Goodell, Adam Silver, Gary Bettman and Rob Manfred. Public pay reports and limited third-party estimates do not establish a comparable net-worth ranking.

The four commissioners typically meant by this comparison lead the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB: Roger Goodell, Adam Silver, Gary Bettman and Rob Manfred. Available public estimates do not support a reliable ranking of all four by personal net worth. Goodell and Silver have third-party estimates, but comparable figures for Bettman and Manfred are not established; reported compensation is a different measure from wealth.

Who leads the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB?

Commissioner League Verified leadership detail
Roger Goodell NFL NFL.com says he was elected commissioner in 2006. His latest reported extension runs through the 2030 league season and expires March 31, 2031; its compensation terms were not disclosed. NFL.com
Adam Silver NBA Identified as NBA commissioner in the compensation comparison; the sources reviewed do not establish additional current-term details. Forbes
Gary Bettman NHL NHL.com says he became the league’s first commissioner on February 1, 1993, and described him in January 2026 as its longest-running leader. NHL.com
Rob Manfred MLB MLB says he became commissioner on January 25, 2015, and is serving a term that concludes after the 2028 season. MLB.com

Why there is no substantiated richest-to-poorest ranking

A net-worth ranking requires comparable estimates of each person’s assets and liabilities, prepared on a consistent basis and at a stated date. The available material does not provide that for all four. It includes third-party estimates for Goodell and Silver, but no similarly sourced estimates for Bettman and Manfred. Those two figures cannot establish who is richest among the four.

Personal net worth is not the same as annual pay, career earnings, a league’s revenue or the value of its teams. A commissioner’s compensation may contribute to personal assets, but it does not reveal taxes, spending, investments, debts or other holdings. No league revenue or franchise valuation should be treated as the commissioner’s personal wealth.

What public figures say—and what they do not

Person and figure What the source reports How to interpret it
Roger Goodell: $250 million Celebrity Net Worth estimate cited by Pro Football Network in a February 8, 2026 article as current as of 2025. Pro Football Network An imprecise third-party personal-net-worth estimate, not an official disclosure. The same article says the NFL does not publicly disclose Goodell’s current compensation.
Adam Silver: $60 million Celebrity Net Worth estimate; no date or shared methodology with Goodell’s estimate is established in the available sources. Celebrity Net Worth An unverified estimate, not a figure that can be compared confidently with Goodell’s or used to rank all four.
Goodell: $63.9 million in each of two fiscal years Forbes reported on October 29, 2021, citing The New York Times, that this was his compensation in fiscal years 2019–20 and 2020–21. The article also listed then-reported annual compensation of $10 million for Silver and Bettman, and $11 million for Manfred. Forbes Historical compensation reporting—not current pay and not personal net worth.
Rob Manfred: $17.5 million; Silver: $10 million; Bettman: $9.5 million SportsCasting’s comparison, updated March 17, 2025, reports these annual compensation figures and also includes Goodell’s historical $63.9 million figure. SportsCasting Secondary reported figures with disclosure periods and bases that are not harmonized; they should not be read as audited, directly comparable current salaries.

How to read claims about a commissioner’s “earnings”

Questions such as “How much does Roger Goodell make?” ask about compensation, while “What is Roger Goodell’s net worth?” asks for an estimate of assets minus liabilities. One reported pay figure cannot answer both. Goodell’s extension has no compensation terms in the NFL.com report, and Pro Football Network says the NFL does not publicly disclose his current compensation.

The NFL owners’ memo quoted by NFL.com characterized Goodell’s extension as “heavily performance based,” with more than 95% of total compensation tied to his and the NFL’s performance against metrics and at the Compensation Committee’s discretion. That describes contract design, not the amount of his personal wealth.
