The ranking measures annual dollar sales—not copies sold—and GamesBeat reported it from NPD’s annual report.
What the 2019 ranking measures
The list is an annual ranking by reported dollar sales in the United States. It does not provide per-game sales totals, unit counts, or a platform breakdown for the overall top 20, so the positions show order only—not the size of the sales gap between games. GamesBeat’s report of NPD’s 2019 ranking was published January 16, 2020, and updated June 19, 2025.
These overall rankings are distinct from the report’s separate Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo 3DS charts. A game’s position in a platform chart should not be read as its position in the annual overall list.

How the ranking fits the wider U.S. market
GamesBeat reported that NPD put total U.S. sales across video-game hardware, full-game software, accessories, and game cards at $14.581 billion in 2019, down 13% from $16.695 billion in 2018. Within that total, full-game software sales were $6.6 billion, down 9%; hardware sales were $3.9 billion, down 22% from $5 billion; and accessories and game-card sales were $4.1 billion, down 7% from $4.4 billion. These are category totals, not sales figures for the 20 individual titles.
In the article, NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said: “Annual dollar software sales dropped 9 percent to $6.6 billion,” as quoted by GamesBeat. Separately, Activision Blizzard’s 2019 annual report, published in 2020, cited NPD data saying the top 10 titles accounted for 33% of U.S. interactive-entertainment retail sales in 2019.

What the chart may leave out
Sales-tracking charts reflect the data available to the tracker, and coverage is not necessarily exhaustive. A current overview notes that some publishers and storefronts do not share sales data with NPD/Circana; it specifically says Nintendo, Microsoft, and Electronic Arts have not shared digital sales data with NPD. This is a general limitation, not evidence that any particular title in the 2019 ranking was missing or misranked.
The Entertainment Software Association’s 2019 Essential Facts report identifies The NPD Group’s Retail Tracking Service and Digital Games Tracking Service as sources for its game-sales data. Its displayed top-20 list is for the prior year, however, rather than this 2019 ranking.
