The available record confirms that InStyle published a scar-cream roundup on July 24, 2025, but it does not establish the full list of 12 products or the article’s testing methods. The only product identified in a partial secondary excerpt is Biodermis Epi-Derm C-Strip silicone scar sheets, reported as the overall pick. For choosing scar care, the more useful starting point is the type of scar: American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) guidance supports silicone mainly for raised scars and keloids, not as a universal treatment for every mark.
What can be verified about InStyle’s 12-product roundup
Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai’s clipping record indexes a closely matching InStyle headline, dated July 24, 2025, and lists Paul Frank. The record does not include the complete article or describe its testing method. A partial secondary search-result excerpt identifies Biodermis Epi-Derm C-Strip silicone scar sheets as the reported overall pick. That is not enough to verify the other 11 products, any category awards, or whether the products were tested hands-on.
Accordingly, there is no reliable basis here for presenting a complete ranked list under the promise “tested by InStyle.” The identified product is a reported roundup pick, not an independently verified winner or proof that it works for every scar type.
Which scars may benefit from silicone
Scar care depends on what kind of scar you have and when it formed. AAD distinguishes raised scars and keloids from depressed acne scars, which need different assessment and treatment. Silicone sheets or topical silicone gel are options to discuss for raised scars; AAD says they may reduce features such as size, hardness, redness, swelling, itch, or stiffness, and may help prevent raised scars, particularly after surgery. In studies cited by AAD, sheets appear to work better than ointment.

- Overnight Scar Treatment: Specially formulated to work with your skin's nighttime regenerative activity to visibly reduce scars while you sleep. Absorbs quickly without leaving a sticky residue, making it comfortable for nightly use
- Triple-Action: Penetrates beneath the skin's surface to seal in moisture, renew cells, and support collagen production.
- Clinically Proven: Improves the color, size, and overall appearance of scars, helping them appear softer, smoother, smaller, and less visible.
- Tripeptol Complex: Contains peptides, collagen, and antioxidants to nourish and promote healthy-looking skin. Safe for sensitive skin.
- Trusted Brand: Mederma is trusted by doctors, pharmacists, pediatricians, and plastic surgeons (Of U.S. physicians and pharmacists surveyed by an independent market research firm)
That guidance does not establish that a silicone product will treat depressed acne scars, erase a scar, or work equally well for every person. If you are unsure whether a mark is raised, depressed, or something else, a dermatologist can assess it and advise on treatment and timing.
Sheets or gel: what to weigh
| Format | What the guidance supports | Practical considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Silicone sheets | AAD says sheets may help raised scars and appear more effective than ointment in studies. | They are worn daily, often for months. Consider whether a sheet will stay in place on the scar’s location and whether you can follow the wear instructions. |
| Topical silicone gel or ointment | AAD includes silicone gel or ointment among options for raised scars. | It can be a format alternative if a sheet is inconvenient. AAD’s comparison says sheets appear to work better than ointment in studies. |
Either format can cause skin problems, including rash or skin breakdown. Follow the product’s directions, and stop using it and consult a dermatologist if irritation or other side effects occur. Cost and value depend on current product pricing; no current price comparison is established here.

When to start—and when not to use scar products
Do not put silicone sheets on an open wound or scab. AAD’s wound-care guidance is to clean a wound, keep it moist with petroleum jelly or a similar ointment, and cover it. Treat it as a wound until it has healed; use silicone only after closure, following the product directions and medical advice. AAD’s keloid guidance likewise advises waiting until the wound has healed or scabbed over before starting silicone sheets.
Protect a healed scar from sunlight
For a healed scar that clothing does not cover, AAD recommends broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Sunscreen helps protect the area from sun exposure; it is not a scar-removal treatment.

Set realistic expectations
AAD’s wound-care guidance puts the limits plainly: “Although no scar can be completely eliminated, most scars fade over time.” The right next step depends on the scar type, its age and history, and whether it is still healing—not simply on whether a product is marketed as a scar cream.
