The clearest like-for-like comparison is local: in San Francisco, La Scuola International School has the highest reported preschool cost per hour, while Children’s Day School has the highest monthly bill among the full-time programs described. Those are different rankings because their schedules differ.
What the available price evidence can—and cannot—rank
A credible “10 most expensive” list needs a defined geography and a common measure. Preschool fees vary by age group, school year, attendance days, daily hours, and whether meals, extended care, or enrollment charges are included. The current sources establish a San Francisco comparison and several school-specific fee schedules in other locations, but they do not provide ten comparable schools or a defensible global ranking.
The San Francisco Chronicle analyzed information from more than 300 local preschools and separated full-time programs (at least eight hours a day) from part-time programs. Its report identifies the leaders under two distinct price measures:
| San Francisco program | Schedule | Reported monthly tuition | Reported hourly cost | What it leads |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| La Scuola International School, part-time | 4 hours 45 minutes per day | About $3,780 | A little under $37 | Highest hourly cost identified |
| La Scuola International School, full-day | 9 hours per day | $4,730 | About $24 | Not the highest full-time monthly bill in the report |
| Children’s Day School | 10 hours per day | $4,890 | About $22.50 | Highest full-time monthly sticker price identified |
These are figures reported by the Chronicle on September 20, 2026, not a national ranking. La Scuola’s part-time schedule costs more per hour despite a lower monthly bill; Children’s Day School’s longer day produces the largest full-time monthly charge in the report. The Chronicle describes La Scuola as 90% Italian-language, Reggio Emilia-inspired, and offering an International Baccalaureate curriculum. It says Children’s Day incorporates Spanish instruction and outdoor farm and garden lessons. Those attributes describe program offerings, not independently measured outcomes or proof that a higher price buys better results. See the Chronicle’s San Francisco price comparison.

How San Francisco prices compare with the local midpoint
The Chronicle’s database, updated September 29, 2026, covers 312 San Francisco preschools. It reports a median monthly cost of about $2,500 for five-day programs operating during typical working hours. That local figure excludes co-ops and financial aid; it is not a national or global average. The database focuses on centers and co-ops with publicly available information, and some schools did not provide tuition details.
The Chronicle gathered source data from July to mid-September 2026. Where 2026–27 rates could not be verified, the database may show prior-year fees. Its tuition totals exclude fees, and meal charges vary. It defines a full day as at least eight hours or a program that offers optional extended care. Check the individual school’s current schedule and contract before treating a database amount as the total cost. The Chronicle’s preschool database explains its coverage and methodology.

Published fee schedules from other markets
Official schedules provide useful examples of what schools charge, but they cannot be ranked directly against the San Francisco figures without matching geography, school year, age group, days, hours, and included costs.
| School and location | School year and program | Published tuition | Additional cost context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Berkeley Rose Waldorf School, California | 2026–27 preschool, five days | $24,000 annually | The schedule also lists three-day preschool at $18,350 and four-day preschool at $21,100. Its $1,500 deposit note refers to 2025–26; the 2026–27 schedule does not establish that deposit handling is unchanged. |
| Pasadena Waldorf School, California | 2026–27 preschool, five-day full days | $26,960 annually | Three-day half days are $15,860; five-day half days are $22,950. The school lists a separate, non-refundable $1,000 enrollment fee and says tuition excludes other charges. |
| La Petite École, Ho Chi Minh City | 2026–27 nursery for ages 1–3, five full days | VND 200,000,000 annually | Five mornings are VND 163,000,000. The official schedule lists a separate initial enrollment charge, states that amounts include taxes, and lists an early-bird discount with a deadline. Amounts are kept in local currency rather than converted using an unspecified exchange rate. |
These are published tuition figures for different programs and markets, not entries in a common top-ten list. Pasadena’s enrollment fee is explicitly additional to tuition; for Berkeley Rose, families should check the current enrollment contract rather than assume the prior-year deposit note applies unchanged. Berkeley Rose’s 2026–27 tuition schedule, Pasadena Waldorf’s tuition information, and La Petite École’s 2026–27 fee schedule provide school-level details.

Why a “most expensive” ranking can mislead
- Monthly bill and hourly cost answer different questions. A long day may have the largest monthly bill, while a shorter schedule has a higher effective hourly rate.
- Program categories are not interchangeable. Nursery, preschool, pre-K, and transitional kindergarten may serve different ages and have different schedules.
- Tuition may not equal first-year cost. Enrollment charges, deposits, meals, transportation, uniforms, and recurring levies can change what a family actually pays.
- Annual tuition needs a calendar. A yearly total is not comparable unless the school year, attendance days, and daily hours are clear.
- Published sticker prices are not net prices. Financial aid or local subsidies can reduce a family’s bill, subject to eligibility and participating-school rules.
For example, the Chronicle says San Francisco’s Early Learning For All program provides free tuition at participating schools for qualifying families of four with income up to $178,300, with credits at higher income tiers. Eligibility and program rules can change, so families should confirm current terms with the local program. The Chronicle database describes the local assistance information it includes.
A practical way to compare preschool costs
- Match the program. Confirm the child’s eligible age, program name, school year, and whether the quote covers preschool rather than another age band.
- Match attendance. Record days per week, scheduled hours per day, and whether extended care is included or optional.
- Separate recurring tuition from additional charges. Ask for enrollment or registration fees, deposits, meals, transport, and other required costs, including whether deposits are refundable or credited.
- Compare the measures separately. Use the school’s published monthly bill for budgeting; calculate an hourly comparison only when the scheduled hours and included services are known. Do not treat a monthly or annual price as an hourly rate without stating the calculation assumptions.
- Check the net cost. Ask whether assistance is available and verify eligibility, participating-school status, and current rules directly with the relevant program.
What the Singapore figures do—and do not—mean
A 2026 GlobalSchoolGuide overview gives a premium international-school band of SGD 48,000–65,000 annually, but labels it a whole-school range rather than an exact preschool quote. It says early-years tuition is generally at or below the lower end of each school’s published range and advises families to confirm rates with schools. The band cannot support attributing SGD 48,000 or more to a particular preschool or using it to rank Singapore preschools. Read the Singapore fee guide and its qualification.
Rank #4
Likewise, Brentwood Presbyterian Church Preschool’s published 2025–26 schedule lists $16,750 for preschool and $21,750 for transitional kindergarten, with a $1,000 contract deposit. Those are older-year figures and a separate program category is included, so they are historical context rather than current comparable rankings. See the school’s tuition schedule.
