There is no evidence here to rank ten brands or name a universally best wipe, so this guide focuses on what to look for, when wipes may not suit a child, and how to care for diaper rash. Check the ingredient list on the current package: formulas can change, and fragrance-free does not mean irritation-proof.
What to look for in baby wipes for sensitive skin
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises using fragrance-free baby wipes or plain water for ordinary diaper care. Its diaper-rash guidance also recommends avoiding wipes with alcohol or fragrance. These are useful starting points, not a guarantee that a particular wipe will suit every baby.
Read the current label rather than relying on front-of-pack terms such as “sensitive,” “natural,” “water-based” or “hypoallergenic.” Those words do not establish that a product is allergy-proof or medically endorsed. If comparing products, use observable details: whether the label says fragrance-free and alcohol-free, whether the full ingredient list is available, and—if verified—the sheet size, texture, pack format and current cost per wipe.
Fragrance-free is different from unscented
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) explains that “unscented” can mean a fragrance has been masked, while “fragrance-free” means the product has no fragrances, including fragrances that cannot be smelled. Fragrance-free is the clearer label to seek, but a baby may still react to another ingredient.

Why a product can still cause a reaction
The AAP notes that some babies react to ingredients in wipes or creams, including fragrances and preservatives. A rash that appears after each exposure and where the product touched the skin can be a clue to an ingredient reaction, but it does not diagnose an allergy. If you suspect a product is involved, stop using it and ask your child’s clinician for advice if the rash persists or concerns you.
When wipes may not be right for a baby with eczema
For children with eczema, the AAD takes a more cautious approach: wipes may contain eczema triggers, and rubbing can trigger eczema. It suggests a clean, soft cotton cloth with warm water instead. This advice is specific to eczema; it is not a blanket recommendation that every baby avoid all wipes.

How to clean gently during diaper rash
At least half of all babies get diaper rash at some point, according to the AAP; the accessed page does not state a publication year for that figure. The most common type is irritant dermatitis, says Ingrid Polcari, MD, FAAP, in the AAP’s guide to common diaper rashes and treatments.

- Change diapers promptly and often. Frequent changes limit how long skin is in contact with urine and stool.
- Clean gently. The AAD recommends water and a soft washcloth, or wipes that are alcohol- and fragrance-free, during diaper-rash care. For a severe rash, a squirt bottle of water may be gentler than wiping.
- Let the skin dry. Pat gently or allow the area to air dry rather than rubbing.
- Use a barrier when appropriate. The AAP recommends a barrier paste containing zinc oxide or petrolatum for diaper-rash care; the AAD also recommends zinc oxide cream when appropriate.

Contact your child’s clinician if a rash does not clear or you are concerned about it. The AAD advises seeking medical advice for fever, blisters, draining pus, a worsening or non-resolving rash, or significant pain. A product-linked pattern can help guide a conversation, but it is not a substitute for an evaluation.
