Customers were reportedly allowed to contact T-Mobile and reject the migration.
If you received a newer notice, do not assume it is the same event. Check the exact plan name, effective date, and dollar amount on your notice or bill before taking action.

What happened to T-Mobile’s older unlimited plans?
On October 11, 2023, 9to5Mac reported that T-Mobile planned to migrate customers on four older unlimited plan families to newer plans:

The reported increase was approximately $10 per line per month. Notices were reportedly expected to begin around October 17, with the changes appearing in November billing cycles.

This was described as a migration to newer plans—not simply an unexplained surcharge. However, the plan list, price, timing, and replacement plan were account-specific. It did not apply to every T-Mobile unlimited customer.
Could customers opt out?
According to the contemporary report, customers could contact T-Mobile customer service to opt out of the migration. The available reporting did not establish a universal app button, online form, or guaranteed self-service process.
Opting out meant asking to retain the existing legacy plan. It was not the same as canceling T-Mobile service. However, customers should not assume that a legacy plan can be kept forever or restored after a voluntary change.

- Review the notice or bill. Record the current plan name, proposed replacement, effective billing cycle, per-line increase, and any stated deadline.
- Call T-Mobile. Dial 611 from a T-Mobile phone or 1-800-937-8997. T-Mobile lists these support options on its customer and plan pages.
- Use precise wording. Say: “I do not want to be migrated to the new plan. Please keep my current legacy plan and confirm the request in writing.”
- Verify the account. Ask the representative to confirm the plan name and recurring rate for every line.
- Ask about promotions. Confirm that free lines, discounts, device installment credits, AutoPay discounts, and age-based, military, or first-responder pricing remain unchanged.
- Save proof. Request a confirmation number. If you use chat, save the complete transcript.
- Check the next bill. Compare the plan name, recurring charges, taxes, fees, credits, and total amount with the previous invoice.
If a representative offers a different plan, ask whether the change is the formal opt-out process or a voluntary plan switch. Do not accept a replacement merely because its advertised base price appears lower.

Which replacement plans were reportedly offered?
The reported replacement mappings came from a customer notice shared through Reddit and were not presented as a definitive public T-Mobile migration table. They appeared to be:

These mappings should not be treated as universal. Your notice and T-Mobile’s account records control. Two customers with the same broad plan family could have different line counts, discounts, or replacement offers.
What could change if you accept a new plan?
A higher advertised price does not automatically mean the replacement is a bad deal. Newer plans may include more high-speed hotspot data, additional premium data, international benefits, streaming services, or upgrade features.

T-Mobile’s current Price Lock FAQ warns that changing plans can end a price promotion tied to the old plan. It also says the former plan and price may not be restorable. Treat a plan change as potentially permanent unless T-Mobile confirms otherwise in writing.
Why did T-Mobile offer an opt-out?
The 2023 report connected the opt-out context to commitments associated with T-Mobile’s acquisition of Sprint. An FCC merger document discussed commitments to continue T-Mobile and Sprint legacy rate plans for three years after the merger, or until better plans with a lower price or more data became available, subject to exceptions involving taxes, fees, surcharges, and certain third-party services.
That document was a dissenting statement discussing merger commitments—not a customer-facing explanation of the specific October 2023 migration. It should not be read as proof that the FCC directly ordered this particular price change or opt-out process.
How Price Lock affects the decision today
T-Mobile’s current Price Lock rules are not one universal guarantee. The company distinguishes among protections such as Original Price Lock, Last Month Price Lock, the Un-contract Promise, and the current 5-Year Price Guarantee based on when the account or plan began and whether the customer later changed plans.

T-Mobile says the 5-Year Price Guarantee applies to qualifying Experience plans activated or switched to beginning April 23, 2025. It covers the monthly talk, text, and T-Mobile 5G data rate for five years, subject to exclusions.
Price protection generally does not freeze every dollar on the bill. T-Mobile’s exclusions include taxes and fees, add-ons, third-party services, per-use charges, some discounts, and network-management practices. The current plan disclosures also show that advertised prices may depend on AutoPay and may exclude taxes, government charges, and provider fees.
For that reason, compare the total bill—not just the plan’s advertised monthly price. A $10 increase in the base rate may look different after taxes, fees, discounts, free lines, and credits are included.
When keeping the legacy plan may be best
Retaining the old plan may make sense when:
- Taxes and fees are already included or unusually favorable.
- You have valuable grandfathered discounts or free lines.
- Your existing international roaming or hotspot benefits exceed those of the proposed plan.
- You rely on device credits that could be disrupted by a switch.
- You do not need the replacement plan’s extra data, streaming, or upgrade benefits.
- The full cost of the replacement is greater than the value of its added features.
The main risk is uncertainty. T-Mobile could issue a later notice affecting the plan, and a future migration may have different terms. Keeping the plan today is not a guarantee that its price and benefits will remain unchanged permanently.

When accepting the replacement may be reasonable
A switch may be worthwhile if you need more hotspot or premium data, the new plan includes benefits you currently pay for separately, or the total multi-line price is competitive after all discounts and fees.
Before agreeing, obtain confirmation that free lines, device credits, and special discounts continue. Also ask for the exact future recurring total and whether taxes and fees are included.
When leaving T-Mobile may be worth considering
If the increase makes the account uncompetitive, compare the full cost of alternatives. A prepaid carrier or MVNO may offer a lower bill, but coverage, data priority, hotspot limits, roaming, customer support, and phone financing can differ.
Do not cancel before checking your T-Mobile account for device installment balances, promotional bill credits, and free-line conditions. A move may make you responsible for a remaining device balance or cause promotional credits to stop.
Any comparison should include:
- Total monthly cost after taxes and fees
- Coverage at home, work, and frequent travel locations
- Premium-data priority
- Hotspot allowance
- International roaming
- Phone financing and trade-in credits
- Family and free-line pricing
- Prepaid payment requirements and cancellation flexibility
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming the 2023 report is a new 2026 announcement: Check the date and your current notice.
- Assuming every customer pays $10 more: The reported amount applied to the identified legacy-plan migration and was approximately $10 per line.
- Comparing only base rates: Include taxes, fees, AutoPay, discounts, credits, and free lines.
- Assuming the app has an opt-out button: The reported instructions directed customers to contact T-Mobile.
- Switching before checking reversibility: T-Mobile warns that the old plan and former price may not be restorable.
- Confusing opt-out with cancellation: The reported option was to reject the migration while retaining service.
- Assuming Price Lock freezes the whole bill: Taxes, fees, add-ons, third-party services, and other charges may remain outside the guarantee.
Before-you-call checklist
- Download or photograph the notice.
- Write down the current plan name and account total.
- List every line, free line, discount, and device credit.
- Record hotspot, roaming, streaming, and premium-data benefits.
- Calculate the increase using the full bill, not just the advertised rate.
- Call 611 or 1-800-937-8997 and request the opt-out if that is your preference.
- Get a confirmation number or save the chat transcript.
- Review the next invoice line by line.
The safest decision is the one based on your complete account economics. If the legacy plan has valuable discounts or benefits, ask T-Mobile to preserve it before accepting any change. If the replacement provides benefits you would otherwise buy separately, compare the total value rather than rejecting it solely because the monthly rate is higher.
