Tesla’s so-called “walking job” is a full-time robotics data-collection role, not a job that pays people simply to walk. In the current Draper, Utah, posting, Tesla says operators must walk more than seven hours a day while carrying up to 30 pounds of equipment. They also collect motion data, manipulate objects, follow test protocols, operate recording devices, and upload and report results. The listing does not state a salary, so the widely repeated “$6,000+” figure is not a confirmed offer for this opening.
What the Tesla walking job actually is
The official title is Data Collection Operator, Optimus. In the current full-time posting for Draper, Utah (Req. ID 272817), the work supports Tesla’s Optimus robotics program by capturing human movement and task data. Operators walk predetermined routes, interact with objects, and wear motion-capture equipment so the activity can be recorded and analyzed. Tesla’s Draper job listing describes this as a hands-on data-collection role, not ordinary walking or a fitness test.
The work also involves starting and stopping recording devices, following precise test instructions, uploading and analyzing data, and submitting daily reports. Tesla lists minor equipment and software debugging, feedback on equipment, safety, and communication with leadership among the duties. Walking is a major physical requirement, but it is only one part of the job.
Can you meet the physical demands?
For the Draper requisition, Tesla says applicants must be able to walk more than seven hours per day while carrying up to 30 pounds of equipment. That is the posting’s stated benchmark; it does not mean every shift consists of uninterrupted walking or establish the exact walking time on any particular day.

The same listing gives a height range of 5 feet 7 inches to 6 feet, citing the role’s motion-capture equipment. It also calls for coordination, attention to detail, the ability to follow precise instructions, and basic software proficiency. Treat these as requirements for this specific posting, rather than assumptions about every Tesla data-collection job.
What hours does the Draper posting list?
The Draper listing shows a schedule of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sunday through Thursday. Schedules are not necessarily the same across Tesla locations. For example, a separate Fremont posting surfaced day and night shifts with 12-hour rotations. Confirm the shift and workdays on the exact location and requisition you are considering; the Fremont schedule is not evidence of the Draper schedule or vice versa. Tesla’s Fremont requisition is a separate posting.

Does Tesla really offer a $6,000 salary for walking?
The current Draper listing reviewed does not state a pay range. The “$6,000” headline comes from secondary coverage published by Glass Almanac on October 9, 2025, which translated compensation into a monthly figure; it does not establish the current pay for the Draper requisition. That article’s headline should not be read as a universal or confirmed current Tesla salary.
Search results for separate Fremont and Quebec Tesla postings showed a range of $25.25–$34.50 per hour, plus cash and stock awards and benefits. That is a location-specific range surfaced for those postings, not a pay figure verified for Draper or every Tesla role. The Fremont posting and Quebec posting are distinct requisitions; check the live listing for the location, compensation terms, and eligibility that apply to you.

How to assess a posting before you apply
Compare the details within the same requisition instead of treating a headline, a monthly conversion, and another location’s hourly range as one offer. Check:
- Location and requisition: Make sure the role is open where you can work and note its job ID.
- Pay and benefits: Look for the stated hourly or salary range, and whether cash awards, stock awards, and benefits are included.
- Schedule: Verify shift hours, days, and whether rotations are specified.
- Physical requirements: Read the walking, equipment-carrying, and any other role-specific requirements carefully.
- Day-to-day work: Confirm that you are comfortable with motion capture, object tasks, recording procedures, data handling, and daily reporting—not just prolonged walking.
For the reviewed Draper posting, comfortable shoes for prolonged walking may be practical preparation, but footwear is not stated as a Tesla requirement or endorsement.
