The Washington Post reported on April 7, 2025, that Elon Musk made personal appeals to President Donald Trump over the weekend of April 5–6, asking him to reverse the tariffs announced the previous week. The report, which cited two people familiar with private talks who spoke anonymously, said the appeals had not succeeded at that point. It did not publish a transcript or establish that Musk literally “begged” Trump.
What did Musk reportedly ask Trump to do?
According to The Washington Post’s April 7, 2025, report, Musk personally appealed to Trump to reverse the tariffs announced on April 2. The account came from two people familiar with private talks, both unnamed in the article. The report is the source for the private-appeal claim; official government documents do not independently confirm what was said in those conversations.
The headline’s word “begged” is a characterization, not a verified quotation. The report describes “direct appeals” and “personal appeals,” but provides neither the exact words nor a transcript. It is therefore more precise to say Musk reportedly urged Trump to reverse the tariffs.
What did Musk say publicly about tariffs?
Separate from the reported private appeals, Musk publicly advocated lower trade barriers. The Associated Press reported that on April 5–6, 2025, he criticized tariff adviser Peter Navarro and, by video conference with Italian politicians, called for a zero-tariff arrangement between Europe and the United States. As quoted by the AP, Musk said: “I hope it is agreed that both Europe and the United States should move ideally in my view to a zero-tariff situation, effectively creating a free trade zone between Europe and North America.”

That public position helps explain why Musk opposed the tariffs, but it does not establish what he said privately to Trump. The AP’s account of his public remarks and The Washington Post’s account of private appeals are distinct reporting. The AP report covers his public comments.
What tariffs was he asking Trump to reverse?
On April 2, 2025, Trump announced a reciprocal tariff policy. The administration’s April 2 fact sheet said a 10% baseline tariff would take effect April 5, with higher individualized rates scheduled for April 9. It also listed exceptions and said the order allowed rates to be adjusted in response to trading partners’ actions. Those details describe the announcement at that time, not the tariff schedule in force today.

The administration’s rationale appears in Trump’s April 2 remarks and the fact sheet: reciprocal treatment was presented as the guiding principle. In the official transcript, however, the line “This memorandum will reshape American trade policy, with the guiding principle being that our tariffs and our treatment of other countries should be reciprocal based on their treatment of us” was spoken by Staff Secretary Scharf, who introduced the memorandum—not by Trump. These statements set out the administration’s argument; they are not independent evidence that the policy achieved its goals. The White House transcript records the remarks.

At the time of The Washington Post’s April 7 report, Musk’s appeals had not succeeded. The article also reported that Trump had threatened further tariffs on Chinese imports that Monday. That is a snapshot of events as reported on April 7, not proof of the eventual outcome of the private discussions.

It reflects the administration’s account of those changes and claimed deal terms; it does not establish the complete tariff schedule in force on October 8, 2026. The September 5 fact sheet should be read with that date attached.
