Tesla’s revenue rose 12% year over year to $28.095 billion in the third quarter of 2025, but the increase does not prove that buyers rushed to beat the federal clean-vehicle tax-credit deadline. Tesla cited higher Model 3 and Model Y cash deliveries as the main driver; its filing does not attribute those deliveries to the credit. The deadline was September 30, 2025, and the credit is no longer available for vehicles acquired after that date.
What happened to Tesla’s revenue in Q3 2025?
Tesla reported $28.095 billion in total revenue for the quarter ended September 30, 2025, up from $25.182 billion in Q3 2024. That 12% year-over-year rebound came after a weaker first half: for the first nine months of 2025, revenue was $69.926 billion, down from $71.983 billion in the same period of 2024. These figures are from Tesla’s Form 10-Q, filed October 22, 2025.

A stronger quarter therefore did not reverse the cumulative decline through September. Revenue measures sales, not profit: Tesla’s margin figures also weakened year over year.
What drove the quarterly increase?
More Model 3 and Model Y cash deliveries
Tesla said automotive sales revenue increased by $1.53 billion, or 8%, to $20.359 billion from $18.831 billion a year earlier. It attributed the increase primarily to approximately 46,000 more combined Model 3 and Model Y cash deliveries. Fewer deliveries of other models and lower recognition of one-time Full Self-Driving (FSD) revenue partly offset the increase, according to the filing.

Energy revenue grew, while regulatory credits fell
Energy generation and storage revenue rose to $3.415 billion from $2.376 billion in Q3 2024, an increase of about 44%. By contrast, automotive regulatory-credit revenue fell to $417 million from $739 million, a decline of about 44%. The figures show different trends within Tesla’s business: growth was not confined to vehicle sales, and credit revenue was lower than a year earlier.
Did the expiring tax credit cause consumers to buy sooner?
The timing makes the tax-credit deadline relevant context: it fell on the last day of the quarter, September 30, 2025. But timing alone does not establish why customers bought vehicles. Tesla’s filing identifies increased Model 3 and Model Y cash deliveries as a revenue driver; it does not say the credit deadline caused those deliveries. The available evidence here does not establish how many buyers accelerated a purchase for that reason.

The IRS said a vehicle had to be acquired on or before September 30, 2025, for the clean vehicle credit to apply, even if it was placed in service later. For a vehicle placed in service after the deadline, the buyer had to show acquisition by then with a binding written contract and payment. The IRS explains the rule in its clean vehicle credit guidance. The deadline has passed: this is not a credit available for a vehicle acquired now.

No. Tesla’s total gross margin was 18.0% in Q3 2025, compared with 19.8% in Q3 2024. Automotive gross margin fell to 17.0% from 20.1%. Gross margin is the share of revenue left after the cost of goods sold; it is not the same as net income, which also reflects other expenses and items. The quarter’s revenue rebound therefore should not be read by itself as evidence of improved profitability. Tesla’s 10-Q provides the reported margin figures.
