Tesla’s Q1 2025 Earnings: Why Revenue and Operating Income Fell

Tesla’s first-quarter 2025 results were sharply weaker than a year earlier: revenue fell 9% to $19.3 billion, operating income fell 66% to $0.4 billion, and operating margin was 2.1%. Tesla pointed to fewer vehicle deliveries, a lower average selling price, foreign-exchange pressure and higher operating expenses. These are historical results for the quarter ended March 31, 2025, not a description of Tesla’s latest financial condition.

What Tesla reported for Q1 2025

Tesla reported $19.3 billion in total revenue, down 9% year over year. Operating income was $0.4 billion, down 66%, and operating margin was 2.1%, according to the company’s Q1 2025 shareholder update.

Measure Q1 2025 result Year-over-year change
Total revenue $19.3 billion Down 9%
Operating income $0.4 billion Down 66%
Operating margin 2.1% Not stated as a year-over-year change in the cited figures
Vehicle deliveries 336,681 Not stated here as a percentage change
Energy storage deployments 10.4 GWh Not stated here as a percentage change

Tesla produced 362,615 vehicles during the quarter, according to its April 2, 2025 production, deliveries and deployments release. Production and deliveries are different measures; cars produced in a quarter are not necessarily all delivered in that quarter.

Why revenue declined

Fewer vehicle deliveries

Tesla identified lower vehicle deliveries as one contributor to lower revenue. The company said the Model Y update across its factories contributed to the decline. Its April delivery release said the line changeover across four factories led to several weeks of lost production.

Lower vehicle average selling price

Tesla also cited a lower vehicle average selling price, or ASP, reflecting vehicle mix and sales incentives. A lower ASP means less revenue per vehicle on average; therefore, vehicle revenue can weaken even beyond the effect of delivering fewer cars.

Foreign exchange and offsets

Tesla said foreign-exchange movements had a negative $0.3 billion impact. That pressure was partly offset by growth in energy generation and storage, services and other, and regulatory credit revenue. These offsets did not prevent total revenue from falling year over year.

Why operating income fell faster than revenue

Operating income fell 66%, substantially more than the 9% decline in revenue. Tesla listed lower deliveries, reduced vehicle ASP and higher operating expenses among the factors affecting operating income. It attributed higher expenses in part to AI and other research and development projects.

Revenue measures sales; operating income reflects what remains after operating costs. When revenue falls while expenses rise, or do not fall enough to match it, operating profit can decline much faster. Tesla also cited lower costs per vehicle as a countervailing factor, but that was not enough to offset the pressures it listed.

What deliveries do—and do not—tell you

The 336,681 deliveries and 10.4 GWh of energy storage deployments provide operating context, but neither number by itself explains the quarter’s financial performance. Tesla cautioned in its delivery release that deliveries and storage deployments “should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results,” because average selling price, cost of sales, foreign exchange and other factors also matter.

  • Deliveries count vehicles handed over, not revenue or profit per vehicle.
  • Average selling price and product mix affect how much revenue each delivery generates.
  • Costs, foreign exchange and the contribution from other businesses also affect financial results.

Futurism’s April 22, 2025 article separately reported that net income fell 71% year over year and automotive revenue fell 20%. Those figures are attributed here to Futurism’s account rather than presented as independently verified figures from Tesla’s primary tables.

How to read this as a personal-finance story

A company’s quarterly earnings are not a complete measure of its current health, and a single quarter does not establish what its future results will be. For a meaningful comparison, use the same quarter year over year and consider revenue, operating income and margin alongside deliveries, vehicle pricing and mix, energy and services, and cash flow. Do not use deliveries as a stand-in for profitability or cash generation.

This explanation concerns Tesla’s Q1 2025 results, the quarter ending March 31, 2025. It does not establish how those figures compare with a later quarter or describe Tesla’s current results.
