Tesla delivered 1,636,129 vehicles in 2025, an 8.6% decline from the prior year. Its 418,227 deliveries in Q4 were its lowest fourth-quarter total since 2022, according to Axios. The decline came amid reported backlash over Elon Musk’s political activity, but available reporting also points to the end of the U.S. federal EV tax credit and aging vehicle designs; it does not establish how much each factor contributed. Deliveries later rose year over year in Q2 2026 and reached 486,532 in Q3.
What “worst deliveries in two years” meant
The historical comparison refers to Tesla’s fourth quarter of 2025, not its full-year total. Tesla reported 418,227 deliveries in Q4 2025, which Axios described as its weakest fourth-quarter showing since 2022. For all of 2025, Tesla reported 1,636,129 deliveries, down 8.6% year over year, according to Axios. Tesla’s release provides the underlying annual and quarterly totals: Tesla Investor Relations; Axios reported the annual decline and historical comparison.
These are delivery figures: vehicles handed over to customers during the stated period. They should not be confused with production, which counts vehicles manufactured, or with financial results such as revenue and profit.
What was reported about the Musk backlash
Axios reported that backlash related to Musk’s political activity was one factor in Tesla’s 2025 sales decline. The same coverage also pointed to the expiration of the U.S. federal EV tax credit later in the year and aging vehicle designs as possible headwinds. The reporting does not quantify the contribution of any one factor, so it does not support saying that backlash alone caused the decline or assigning it a specific number of lost deliveries.

Those explanations are reported context, not a measured causal breakdown. A later increase in deliveries cannot by itself show whether public attitudes changed: sales can move for multiple reasons, including product offerings, incentives and broader demand.
How deliveries changed in 2026

Tesla’s Q3 release also reported production of 464,391 vehicles, fewer than deliveries that quarter. Deliveries and production measure different activity, so the two figures should not be treated as interchangeable. Tesla reported the Q3 totals in its October 2, 2026 release.
What may have helped the Q2 improvement
AP’s July 2026 coverage pointed to lower-priced Model Y and Model 3 variants, European sales incentives and a continent-wide rise in EV buying as possible contributors to the Q2 increase. It suggested the figures might mean the worst of the backlash had passed, but that was an interpretation—not proof that backlash had ended or that it no longer affected demand.

Tesla’s deliveries compared with BYD
Tesla also lost the annual EV sales lead in 2025. The Associated Press reported that BYD sold 2.26 million vehicles that year, compared with Tesla’s 1.64 million deliveries. These are annual totals, and the comparison is between BYD vehicle sales as reported by AP and Tesla deliveries; it is not a comparison of quarterly results or financial performance.

Q2 and Q3 2026 deliveries were higher than Q4 2025, and Q2 deliveries were 25% above the same quarter a year earlier. That is evidence of a recovery in reported delivery volume, not proof of stronger profits, improved cash flow or the end of the backlash.

Tesla cautions that deliveries are only one measure of financial performance. In its October 2, 2026 release, the company said: “Tesla vehicle deliveries and storage deployments represent only two measures of the Company’s financial performance and should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results, which depend on a variety of factors, including average selling price, cost of sales, foreign exchange movements and others as to be disclosed in the 10-Q for the quarter ended on September 30, 2026.”
As of October 8, 2026, Tesla had not yet reported its Q3 financial results; it scheduled their release for October 21, 2026. The delivery count alone cannot answer how revenue, profit or cash flow performed.
