Tesla did not report broad customer availability of its unnamed “more affordable model” by the early-2025 target. In its Q2 2025 update, the company said it had completed first builds in June and planned volume production for the second half of the year. Later, Tesla reported U.S. launches of lower-priced Model 3 and Model Y Standard trims in October 2025, but its cited statements do not establish that either was the exact vehicle originally promised.
What did Tesla promise, and when?
The timing changed as Tesla updated its plans. On its April 23, 2024, Q1 earnings call, CEO Elon Musk said the company expected its next vehicles earlier than a previously communicated second-half-2025 production target: “So, we expect it to be more like the early 2025, if not late this year.” That was an estimate, not a guaranteed date. Tesla’s Q1 2024 shareholder update said the vehicles would combine aspects of its next-generation and current platforms and could be built on existing vehicle production lines.
On January 29, 2025, Tesla management gave a later, more specific target in its Q4 2024 earnings-call prepared remarks: “We are still on track to launch a more affordable model in the first half of 2025 and will continue to expand our lineup from there.” The statement did not name the model or give a price or specification.
What milestones did Tesla report in 2025?
- Q1 2025: Tesla’s SEC filing identified the New Model Y as a first-quarter launch and also discussed broader plans for new and more affordable products. It did not explicitly identify the New Model Y as the unnamed model from the earlier promise.
- June 2025: In its Q2 update, Tesla said it had completed first builds of a more affordable model in June and planned volume production for the second half of the year. First builds are an early production milestone; the update did not say that volume production or customer deliveries had begun.
- October 2025: Tesla’s Q3 update reported U.S. launches of Model 3 Standard and Model Y Standard. These are named trims of existing model lines, but the update did not say they were the exact vehicle discussed in the 2024 call.
Are the Standard trims the cheaper car Tesla promised?
The company’s reported launches show that Tesla later expanded its more-affordable offerings, but they do not resolve whether those trims were the same product as the unnamed model in the 2024 and January 2025 statements. Tesla’s Q2 2026 SEC filing described continued global rollout of more affordable Model 3 and Model Y trims. That documents an ongoing affordability effort, not a retrospective identification of the original promised model.

Tesla’s Q3 2025 investor update reported the following figures for the October U.S. launches. They are figures reported at that time, not current quotes or worldwide terms.
| Trim | U.S. starting price reported in October 2025 | Range reported by Tesla |
|---|---|---|
| Model 3 Standard | $36,990 | Over 300 miles |
| Model Y Standard | $39,990 | Over 300 miles |
What to conclude about Tesla’s early-2025 timeline
The April 2024 “early 2025” remark was an early estimate; Tesla’s January 2025 statement put the target in the first half of that year. The company later reported June first builds and second-half volume-production plans, followed by October U.S. launches of two Standard trims. Those updates establish meaningful milestones in Tesla’s affordability plans, but they do not prove that the unnamed model reached broad customer availability in the first half of 2025 or that the October trims were that exact model.
