No: the often-cited 94% figure does not mean 94% of Germans rejected Tesla. It was the result of a non-representative, self-selected t-online poll on March 11, 2025—and the poll’s results later shifted sharply before the publisher stopped it amid irregular voting. Separate evidence points to low Tesla purchase consideration and a substantial fall in German registrations, but those are distinct findings.
What did the 94% figure measure?
t-online asked readers, “Würden Sie noch einen Tesla kaufen?”—“Would you still buy a Tesla?” On March 11, 2025, about 94% of participating users selected “Auf gar keinen Fall” (“Under no circumstances”), while about 3% selected “Ja, kein Problem” (“Yes, no problem”). The poll was explicitly non-representative: participants chose whether to take part, so its result cannot be treated as an estimate of German public opinion. t-online’s account of the poll describes what happened, but not a representative national survey.
Why did t-online stop the poll?
By March 18, when the poll had recorded 467,500 votes, the reported result had swung to about 70% willing to buy a Tesla and 29.2% opposed. t-online said an internal review found 253,000 votes associated with two IP addresses in the United States. The publisher said the origin was unclear and manipulation was possible; it stopped the poll and removed it from related articles. It also reported that the link had been widely shared on X and other social networks. The available account does not identify who was responsible for the votes or establish a motive, so the episode is best described as suspected manipulation or irregular voting—not proof of who acted.
What does a later survey say about German buyers?
A separate survey by the German Economic Institute (Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft, IW), conducted online in summer 2025 and reported in 2026, found that nearly 60% of respondents ruled out buying a Tesla entirely and a further 16% were inclined against it. Around 13% said they could imagine buying one. The results indicate limited purchase consideration in that survey; they do not validate t-online’s earlier 94% figure, because the surveys used different methods and populations.

- Hot Wheels Tesla Model Y, HW Green Speed 1/10 [Gray] 37/250
IW’s press release says 5,392 adults in Germany were surveyed online from June 25 to July 3, 2025, using the Bilendi & respondi access panel, with quotas for income, state of residence, and sex/age. The institute’s study page reports different sample figures: 5,425 respondents, a valid net sample of 5,293, and a random subsample of 1,781 used for much of the analysis. These counts describe different reporting details and should not be combined into a single sample-size claim. See the IW survey and press release for its account of the findings.
Are Tesla registrations actually falling in Germany?
Yes. KBA registration figures reported by IW show 19,390 new Tesla registrations in Germany in 2025, 48% fewer than in 2024. The Model Y moved from first place among the country’s EV models in 2024 to 12th in 2025. Registrations record vehicles registered, while surveys measure stated intentions; neither alone explains the other. t-online’s January 2026 coverage summarizes the registration figures and IW analysis.

Did Elon Musk’s politics cause the decline?
The IW analysis finds a strong association between political preferences and respondents’ intentions to buy electric vehicles and Teslas. Its authors suggest Musk’s political role may have alienated some prospective customers. That is an interpretation of survey patterns, not proof that his politics caused the registration decline. The figures cited here do not isolate a single cause or rule out other market and commercial factors.
