In September 2024, reports said managers at Tesla’s Grünheide factory in Brandenburg visited some employees at home after repeated sick leave. Tesla manufacturing director André Thierig defended the visits as an appeal to employees’ work ethic; union IG Metall called the approach misguided and pointed to heavy workloads. The reports document competing explanations, not an independent finding about why absences were high or whether the visits were lawful.
What happened at Tesla’s Grünheide factory
ARD Tagesschau reported on 26 September 2024 that leaders at Tesla’s factory in Grünheide, outside Berlin, had visited employees at home after repeated sick leave. Thierig said Tesla would continue to consider unannounced visits and described them as a way to appeal to employees’ work ethic. He also characterized such visits as common among companies. ARD Tagesschau’s report records his defense and IG Metall’s criticism.
The reports give different counts. Thierig told Tagesschau that Tesla had identified a little over 200 employees who, while receiving continued wage payments, had not worked that year and submitted new sick notes at least every six weeks; he said the company selected two dozen cases for visits. Ars Technica reported that managers visited 30 employees. The accounts do not reconcile these numbers, so they should not be treated as a single verified count. Ars Technica’s report gives its account of the number visited.
How Tesla and IG Metall explained the absences

Management presented attendance patterns and suspected abuse of the social system as reasons to address absences. IG Metall regional director Dirk Schulze instead emphasized workload and pressure across many areas of the factory. The reports do not independently establish either explanation as the cause. Ars Technica quoted Schulze saying that to reduce sickness, factory management should “break this vicious circle.”

What the reports establish—and what they do not
- The coverage concerns reported home visits to employees on sick leave at Tesla’s Grünheide factory in September 2024.
- The number of visits and the reported absence rates differ between outlets; the figures retain their respective attributions and were not reconciled.
- The accounts include management’s defense and the union’s criticism, but no independent determination of why sickness absence was high.
