Tesla vs. BYD: How to Compare EV Sales and Market Share in 2025

BYD’s 2025 sales include both BEVs and PHEVs, while Tesla’s cited filing reports a delivery decline rather than a matched BEV count. Here’s how to compare them without conflating market definitions.

There is no defensible single 2025 Tesla-versus-BYD market-share percentage in the figures cited here: BYD reports passenger-vehicle sales for both battery-electric and plug-in-hybrid cars, while the cited Tesla filing reports an approximately 8% year-over-year decline in cash deliveries but not a matched full-year BEV count. A fair comparison must use the same period, geography, vehicle type, and sales basis—and state what the market-share denominator includes.

What the 2025 sales figures show

BYD’s December 2025 results announcement reports 4,602,436 new-energy-vehicle sales for the year. Within that total, it reports 2,256,714 battery-electric passenger vehicles (BEVs) and 2,288,709 plug-in-hybrid passenger vehicles (PHEVs). These are company-reported figures marked unaudited; the total is not a BEV-only count. See BYD’s December 2025 production and sales announcement.

Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K says cash deliveries decreased approximately 8% year over year. Automotive sales revenue decreased 9%, with lower average selling prices also contributing. Neither percentage is a unit-sales total or a market-share figure. The cited filing passage does not provide a corresponding full-year BEV sales count for a matched comparison. These company disclosures answer different questions: BYD provides sales volumes by powertrain, while Tesla’s cited passage gives year-over-year changes. They should not be converted into a direct ranking or market-share calculation.

How large was the electric-car market?

The International Energy Agency (IEA) says global electric-car sales exceeded 20 million in 2025, up 20% year over year, and reached 25% of all new-car sales. In this IEA measure, “electric cars” includes BEVs and PHEVs. A separate IEA Global Energy Review rounds the 2025 total to 21 million and describes it as one in four new cars sold. The rounded figure is consistent with the broader scale, not a separate BEV-only tally.

Those global market totals provide context, but they do not establish either automaker’s share. The 25% figure is the share of all new cars that were electric under the IEA’s BEV-plus-PHEV definition. It is not BYD’s or Tesla’s company share. See the IEA’s electric-car market trends and Global Energy Review 2026 electric-vehicle data.

Choose the comparison before calculating market share

“Tesla vs. BYD EV sales” can describe several different comparisons. Before using a percentage, define each of these elements:

  • Period: Use the same calendar or fiscal period for both companies. Mark monthly or quarterly figures as provisional where relevant and account for revisions.
  • Geography: Global sales, China sales, European registrations, and sales in an individual country have different denominators. Put the region beside every share.
  • Vehicle scope: BEV-only is narrower than BEV-plus-PHEV. BYD reports both powertrains separately; the IEA’s electric-car totals include both. Do not treat a broad electric-car total as a BEV count.
  • Numerator and denominator: For example, global BEV share is a brand’s BEV sales divided by all brands’ BEV sales in the same period and geography. Share of all electric cars needs a BEV-plus-PHEV denominator; share of all new cars needs all new-car sales.
  • Sales basis: Company-reported deliveries or sales, wholesales, and vehicle registrations can differ in timing and geography. Do not combine them without explaining the difference.
  • Level of comparison: A model’s share of BEV sales is not its manufacturer’s share of all EV sales.

If any of these choices differs between the two brands, the resulting percentages do not make a like-for-like comparison.

What China and model-level data can—and cannot—tell you

BYD’s share of China’s domestic EV sales

The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) reports that BYD represented 26% of domestic EV sales in China in 2025, and that PHEVs made up 54% of BYD’s domestic EV sales. This is a China-specific, EV-sales comparison in which the PHEV contribution matters; it is not a global BEV-only share. See the ICCT’s 2025 global electric-vehicle market monitor.

For a different year and denominator, the IEA attributed about 15% of all car sales in China to BYD in 2024. That is an all-car share, not the 2025 domestic EV-only share reported by the ICCT, so the two percentages should not be compared as a trend. The IEA describes the 2024 figure in its Global EV Outlook 2025 electric-mobility outlook.

Popular models are not company-wide market shares

In 2025, the Tesla Model Y accounted for nearly 8% of global BEV sales, the Tesla Model 3 for 3.6%, and the BYD Seagull for 3.0%. The IEA says the top five models together represented about 20% of global BEV sales. These are model-level shares of global BEV sales—not shares for Tesla or BYD across every model, and not shares of the broader BEV-plus-PHEV electric-car market. The figures appear in the IEA’s 2026 electric-car trends analysis.

Do not confuse adoption with a brand’s market share

The IEA reported that electric cars made up nearly 55% of all car sales in China in 2025. That is the adoption share of electric cars among all cars sold in China, using the IEA’s BEV-and-PHEV scope. It does not say what percentage of China’s market belonged to BYD or Tesla. A country’s electric-car adoption rate and an automaker’s share are different metrics because their numerators and denominators differ.
