As of October 4, 2026, Tesla’s latest posted results were for the second quarter of 2026, covering the three months ended June 30. Tesla had scheduled its third-quarter 2026 earnings for October 21, so those results were not yet available. Start with revenue, then see where it came from
Total revenue gives a sense of business scale, but segment revenue shows whether growth is concentrated in vehicles, energy generation and storage, or services and other. Tesla reported Q2 2026 revenue of $28.236 billion, compared with $22.496 billion in Q2 2025. Revenue for the first six months of 2026 was $50.623 billion, versus $41.831 billion in the same period of 2025.

Those increases should not be read as proof that vehicle volume alone drove growth. Automotive revenue can change with deliveries, prices, incentives and product mix. Services and other includes several different activities—not one uniform recurring software stream—including paid Supercharging, maintenance and collision work, used vehicles and insurance. For the first half of 2026, Tesla said services and other revenue rose 46% year over year, primarily reflecting used-vehicle volume and average selling price, non-warranty maintenance and collision revenue, and paid Supercharging sessions.

For the reported breakdown and management’s explanations, see Tesla’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q. Treat the filing’s explanations as management’s account of the drivers, not independent proof of causation.
Check vehicle profitability—and separate out regulatory credits
Automotive gross profit and gross margin help show how much revenue remains after costs assigned to the automotive segment. Tesla’s reported automotive gross margin, however, includes regulatory-credit revenue. Because credits can vary with regulation, production and sales, a margin change may not reflect vehicle pricing or manufacturing costs alone.
In Q2 2026, automotive regulatory-credit revenue was down $293 million, or 67%, year over year; for the first half, it was down $508 million, or 49%. For the full year 2025, it fell $770 million, or 28%. Tesla’s FY2025 filing reported automotive gross margin of 17.8%, down from 18.4% in 2024, and attributed the decrease primarily to lower regulatory-credit revenue and changes in automotive sales and cost of sales.

Use the reported margin and credit revenue as separate figures. Do not call a margin “excluding credits” unless the company provides that calculation; if you calculate an adjusted figure yourself, label it as your calculation and show the method. Tesla’s FY2025 Form 10-K discusses the annual margin and credit context.
Follow operating income before drawing conclusions from earnings
Operating income is what remains after operating expenses, including research and development (R&D) and selling, general and administrative costs. Operating margin—the share of revenue left as operating income—connects gross profit to the company’s spending on running and developing the business.
Track R&D and SG&A in dollars and as a share of revenue. Look for explanations of major changes in stock-based compensation, AI spending, restructuring or other disclosed costs rather than assuming that revenue growth automatically means better operating leverage. In FY2025, Tesla’s R&D expense rose 41% from 2024 to $6.411 billion; the company said the increase primarily reflected AI and other programs and higher stock-based compensation.
Use GAAP net income and diluted EPS for the bottom line
Net income attributable to common stockholders and diluted earnings per share (EPS) show bottom-line earnings and the per-share result. They can move differently from operating income because of items below operations, such as interest income, tax effects, foreign exchange and other income or expense.
Tesla reported Q2 2026 net income attributable to common stockholders of $1.11 billion, down $58 million year over year. For the first half of 2026, net income was $1.59 billion, up $10 million. Use GAAP figures as the baseline. If you compare a non-GAAP or adjusted result from an earnings release, label it clearly and consult the company’s reconciliation rather than treating it as interchangeable with GAAP net income or EPS.
Read energy as a separate business
Compare energy generation and storage revenue, gross profit, margin and reported storage deployments on their own. A growing energy business can coexist with weaker vehicle economics, and revenue growth by itself does not establish improved profitability.
For FY2025, energy revenue grew 27% year over year, primarily from increased Megapack and Powerwall deployments. Energy gross margin was 29.8% in 2025, up from 26.2% in 2024. In Q2 2026, energy generation and storage revenue was $3.139 billion, compared with $2.789 billion a year earlier, while margin decreased from 30.3% to 20.4%. Tesla attributed the quarterly margin decline primarily to changes in segment revenue and cost, including higher average cost per MWh associated mainly with sales mix and unfavorable warranty adjustments.
Deployment timing matters: Tesla cautions that Megapack deployments can vary meaningfully from quarter to quarter because of project milestones and logistics. Check the company’s stated context before treating a quarterly swing as a durable trend.

Operating cash flow indicates cash generated by operations. Compare it with capital expenditures (capex) to understand investment demands and free cash flow, while checking the company’s definitions and reconciliations for reported free-cash-flow figures. Liquidity adds context about the cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments available to fund the business.
Best Value
For the six months ended June 30, 2026, Tesla reported operating cash flow of $8.63 billion, compared with $4.70 billion in the first half of 2025. At June 30, 2026, it held $43.524 billion in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments, down $535 million from year-end 2025. Tesla said it expected 2026 capex to exceed $25 billion, citing AI initiatives, compute infrastructure and data centers, manufacturing and R&D facilities, and its company-operated asset and service footprint. That is company guidance, not capex already spent or a guaranteed outcome; cash on hand does not establish that each planned project will earn an adequate return.
Compare periods without confusing results and outlook
A quarter is a snapshot. Same-quarter year-over-year comparisons help reduce seasonal distortion; sequential comparisons can also show recent momentum. Make the periods and units explicit, then look for a pattern across several quarters rather than reading too much into one movement.
- Growth and profitability: Compare revenue growth with gross profit, segment gross margins and operating margin.
- Vehicle economics and credits: Read automotive sales revenue and margin alongside regulatory-credit revenue, and use Tesla’s filing commentary on pricing, mix and incentives.
- Business mix: Compare revenue and gross-profit contribution from automotive, energy, and services and other, adding deployment or activity context where Tesla reports it.
- Earnings and cash: Put GAAP net income and diluted EPS beside operating cash flow, capex, free cash flow and cash/investments.
- Actuals and outlook: Mark reported results separately from management expectations and any analyst consensus. Do not present a forecast as an achieved result.
Potential sources of quarter-to-quarter change include seasonality, product mix, project timing, credits, currency and accounting or one-off items. Use the company’s stated explanations, but do not infer that a factor caused a change merely because the two moved together.
