The “50% since December” drop refers to Tesla’s historical decline from mid-December 2024 to early March 2025, when shares fell from about $480 to approximately $220; it is not a current August 2026 performance claim. For investors, the practical question is whether their portfolio can withstand the volatility of a single stock—not whether a sharp decline automatically makes TSLA cheap.
What happened to Tesla stock?
TSLA reached a mid-December 2024 high near $480 before losing more than half its value by early March 2025. The decline included a 15% one-day drop on March 10, 2025. Reporting described a combination of concerns, not one confirmed cause: weaker delivery expectations, questions about vehicle demand and valuation, investor unease about Elon Musk’s political involvement, and broader market worries. Forbes reported on the episode.
Tesla’s value reflects expectations not only for current vehicle sales but also for margins, energy storage, software, robotaxis, AI infrastructure and other future growth. When expectations change, a stock priced for exceptional growth can fall faster than a more mature company’s shares. Tesla’s filings also identify risks including competition, demand and product acceptance, supply chains, production capacity, profitability, regulation, management strategy and macroeconomic conditions. Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K discusses these risks.
Put the “50% drop” in the right time frame
Using the approximate prices reported for the 2024–2025 episode, a move from $480 to $220 represents a decline of about 54%:

($220 − $480) ÷ $480 = −54.2%
That is different from measuring TSLA against a later December peak. Tesla closed at $489.88 on December 16, 2025. At a quoted price of $328.58 on August 8, 2026, the decline from that high was approximately 32.9%, not 50%. StatMuse provides historical price data.
Before drawing conclusions from a percentage decline, identify the starting date, ending date and price type—closing, intraday or adjusted. A headline can be accurate for one period and misleading when reused months later.
Why a large price decline does not automatically mean “buy”
A lower share price changes the entry price; it does not establish that Tesla is undervalued. Consider whether the company is executing against the expectations built into its market value:
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Are vehicle deliveries growing? | Growth supports the case for Tesla’s core business, but deliveries alone do not show revenue, margins or cash flow. |
| What is happening to average selling prices? | Discounting can increase volume while reducing revenue per vehicle and potentially pressuring margins. |
| Are automotive margins stabilizing? | Lower margins can weaken the earnings justification for a high-growth valuation. |
| Can new businesses scale profitably? | Energy storage, autonomy and AI may offer future growth, but forecasts are not delivered results. |
| How much capital will expansion require? | Investment can build future capacity while consuming cash in the near term. |
Tesla reported 480,126 vehicle deliveries in the second quarter of 2026, including 467,762 Model 3/Y vehicles, and deployed 13.5 gigawatt-hours of energy storage. Tesla cautions that deliveries and deployments are not substitutes for analyzing quarterly revenue or profitability; average selling prices, costs, foreign exchange and other factors also affect results. Tesla’s second-quarter 2026 release gives the figures and caveat.

Check how much Tesla exposure you really have
Review exposure across your entire portfolio, including:
- Individual TSLA shares in taxable and retirement accounts.
- Tesla shares held through an employer plan or stock-compensation account.
- Options, restricted stock or other instruments linked directly to Tesla.
- Tesla-heavy technology, growth or electric-vehicle funds.
- Any margin balance that could force a sale during a sharp decline.
For example, someone with $20,000 of Tesla stock and $80,000 in other investments has a 20% direct allocation. If a fund in the other $80,000 also holds Tesla, economic exposure is higher than 20%. FINRA describes overlapping holdings as a potential concentration risk: losses in one company or sector can have an outsized effect on a portfolio. FINRA explains concentration risk.
There is no universally safe Tesla percentage. The appropriate allocation depends on your time horizon, income stability, emergency savings, other assets and ability to tolerate a prolonged loss. Investor.gov says asset allocation should reflect time horizon and risk tolerance.
A practical volatility plan
- Write down the purpose of the holding. Decide whether Tesla is a speculative position, a long-term growth allocation or money for a specific goal. If the goal and holding do not match, the decline may have exposed a planning problem—not necessarily a trading opportunity.
- Set a maximum allocation before acting. Choose a limit based on your own risk capacity. Include indirect exposure through funds and compensation. Do not borrow to maintain an allocation after a decline.
- Choose a rebalancing rule. Review on a calendar schedule or act when a holding moves beyond a preset percentage band. Decide the rule before the next headline rather than reacting to a dramatic daily move. Investor.gov describes rebalancing.
- Separate investment conviction from company loyalty. Ask what evidence would change your thesis. Possible markers include sustained delivery weakness, margin deterioration, rising capital needs, regulatory developments or failure to commercialize expected products.
- Protect near-term cash needs. Money required for rent, tuition, taxes, a home purchase or retirement withdrawals should not depend on Tesla recovering by a particular date.
- Review taxes before selling. In a taxable account, consider cost basis, holding period and potential capital gain or loss. A tax professional can explain rules affecting loss harvesting, wash sales and state taxes.
Should you use dollar-cost averaging?
Dollar-cost averaging means investing equal amounts at regular intervals regardless of market movements. It can reduce the risk of committing all planned capital at once: you buy more shares at lower prices and fewer at higher prices. Investor.gov defines dollar-cost averaging.

It does not make Tesla safe, guarantee a profit or prevent a large loss. If the business underperforms for years, repeated purchases can increase the amount exposed to that weakness. A schedule is more defensible as part of a diversified allocation funded with money not needed soon—not as a reason to keep averaging into an oversized position.
Be cautious with inverse and leveraged Tesla products
Leveraged and inverse single-stock exchange-traded products are not simple insurance policies. Many reset exposure daily, so their results over weeks or months can differ substantially from the inverse or leveraged performance an investor expects. Volatility can magnify that difference.
These products can also introduce higher costs, tracking risk and the possibility of rapid losses. The SEC warns that single-stock leveraged and inverse ETFs can be riskier than holding the underlying stock, especially when held beyond their stated reset period. Read the SEC’s investor alert. To reduce exposure, consider straightforward actions such as trimming the stock, removing margin or diversifying future contributions. Any derivative or single-stock ETF strategy requires understanding its prospectus, reset frequency, fees and potential losses.
Keep an eye on the risks Tesla itself identifies
Tesla’s filings describe risks involving competition, product acceptance, supply chains, manufacturing capacity, profitability, regulation, management strategy and macroeconomic conditions. The company expects 2026 capital expenditures to exceed $20 billion, driven by AI initiatives, computing infrastructure, data centers, manufacturing and research expansion, and charging and service infrastructure. Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K reports the outlook.

Those investments could support future growth, but they make execution and capital allocation important. At December 31, 2025, Tesla reported $16.51 billion in cash and cash equivalents, $27.55 billion in short-term investments and $8.18 billion in aggregate debt. Liquidity does not remove operating or valuation risk. The filing provides these balance-sheet figures.
Tesla’s March 2026 quarterly filing disclosed an agreement intended to mitigate the potential market impact of significant share sales associated with Elon Musk’s exercise of the 2018 CEO Performance Award. The relevant restricted shares require continued service through January 19, 2028 to vest. Read the actual filing rather than assume a headline about potential dilution or selling predicts the stock’s next move. Tesla’s March 2026 filing describes the agreement.

| Weak conclusion | Better conclusion |
|---|---|
| “Tesla fell 50%, so it must be cheap.” | Compare valuation with realistic earnings, cash-flow and growth assumptions. |
| “The decline was caused entirely by Musk’s politics.” | Political concerns may have contributed alongside demand, valuation, market and operating factors. |
| “Record deliveries prove the business is healthy.” | Deliveries are one operating measure; margins, revenue, cash flow and capital needs also matter. |
| “An inverse ETF will protect me.” | Single-stock inverse products have reset, tracking and volatility risks and may not hedge as expected. |
| “I should sell immediately.” | Decide in light of your portfolio plan, tax position, time horizon and investment thesis. |
When a portfolio review is more urgent
Review the position promptly if a Tesla decline means you cannot meet a near-term financial goal, your portfolio is heavily concentrated, you are using margin, your employment income already depends on Tesla, or you are losing sleep and changing your plan daily. These may indicate that the position exceeds your financial or emotional risk capacity.
For long-term investors with a diversified portfolio, no leverage and a defined allocation, volatility may be uncomfortable without requiring an emergency trade. The goal is not to predict the next Tesla bounce. It is to ensure one company’s next 30% or 50% move cannot derail the rest of your financial plan.

FAQ
Is Tesla stock currently down 50% since December?
Not based on the December 16, 2025 closing high and the quoted August 8, 2026 price. The more-than-50% decline refers to the historical move from roughly mid-December 2024 to March 2025, when TSLA fell from about $480 to approximately $220.
Did Elon Musk’s politics cause the entire Tesla selloff?
There is no basis for assigning the entire decline to one factor. Contemporary reporting pointed to a combination of delivery concerns, valuation, vehicle demand, broader market weakness and investor reaction to Musk’s political involvement.
How much Tesla stock should I own?
There is no universally appropriate percentage. Consider your time horizon, ability to withstand losses, income, emergency fund, indirect exposure through funds and whether you need the money soon. A financial professional can help with an individualized allocation.
Is dollar-cost averaging Tesla a safe strategy?
No. Regular investing can reduce timing risk, but it does not prevent losses or make a single company diversified. Use it only within an allocation you can afford to hold through a prolonged decline.

The Tesla crash was real, but “50% since December” describes the December 2024–March 2025 period. For investors managing TSLA now, review direct and indirect exposure, remove leverage, protect near-term cash needs and use a preset allocation or rebalancing rule. Do not treat a dramatic fall as automatic proof that the stock is cheap or use leveraged or inverse products as a casual hedge.
