Tesla settled the wrongful-death lawsuit brought by Walter Huang’s family on April 8, 2024, one day before the case was scheduled to go to trial. The settlement amount and terms were not disclosed in contemporaneous reporting, and there was no jury verdict deciding Tesla’s liability.
What happened in the Walter Huang crash?
Walter Huang, a 38-year-old Apple engineer and father of two, died on March 23, 2018, when his Tesla Model X struck a concrete highway barrier near Mountain View, California, at the US 101 and State Route 85 interchange. Contemporaneous reporting said Autopilot was engaged and that Huang was using a phone. Those details do not, by themselves, resolve legal fault.
His family sued Tesla in 2019, alleging negligence and wrongful death and arguing, among other things, that Tesla had overstated Autopilot’s capabilities. Tesla’s defense, as reported at the time, was that it warns drivers to remain alert and responsible while Autopilot is active. These were opposing positions in the lawsuit, not findings reached at trial. The New York Times’ account of the crash and lawsuit describes the claims and Tesla’s position.
Why did Tesla settle, and how much did it pay?
The parties settled on April 8, 2024, the day before jury selection was scheduled to begin. The amount and terms were not made public in the court documents described by contemporaneous coverage. The Associated Press reported that a court filing seeking privacy quoted Tesla’s stated reason for settling as “end years of litigation.” That explanation is Tesla’s stated position, not proof of any further motive. Did a court find Tesla responsible?
No jury decided Tesla’s liability in this case. A settlement resolves the parties’ lawsuit without a verdict; it should not be described as Tesla losing at trial, admitting fault, or being found liable. The scheduled 2024 trial did not take place because the case settled before it began. Reuters’ report likewise described the agreement as a settlement reached before trial.
What did the NTSB say about the crash?
The National Transportation Safety Board investigated the crash separately from the civil lawsuit. Reporting on its investigation described contributing factors that included Huang’s distraction, limitations in Tesla’s Autopilot design and operation, and California’s failure to replace a damaged crash attenuator. These are safety-investigation findings, not a civil-court ruling on negligence in the settled case. The NTSB’s 2019 release summarizes its findings.

Then-NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt said the crash demonstrated the limitations of advanced driver-assistance systems and stressed that drivers must remain actively engaged even when such systems are operating. His warning concerned driver-assistance technology broadly; it was not a verdict in Huang’s lawsuit.
Why did the settlement draw attention?
The case was a high-profile wrongful-death lawsuit involving Autopilot, and the agreement prevented a jury trial that had been scheduled to start the next day. Ed Walters, a Georgetown Law instructor in autonomous-vehicle law, said he was surprised by the settlement and thought the crash facts seemed favorable to Tesla. He also observed: “You could win in court, but lose in the trial of public opinion.” Those were Walters’ assessments, not evidence of Tesla’s reason for settling.

Separately, a 2024 Washington Post analysis of NHTSA data reported that Autopilot had been linked to more than 700 crashes since 2019 and at least 19 fatalities. That is a dated analysis, not a current count, and “linked” does not mean each crash was caused by Autopilot. The Washington Post analysis provides that historical context.

Huang’s family also pursued a separate claim involving the State of California over highway markings and the damaged crash barrier. A contemporaneous 2024 report said it was unclear how the Tesla settlement would affect that claim; the available reporting cited here does not establish its later outcome. It was distinct from the settled lawsuit against Tesla.
