Elon Musk initially described June 22, 2025, as a tentative start date for Tesla’s Robotaxi service in Austin. Tesla began giving rides that day, but the first rollout was small and restricted to a geofenced part of South Austin—not a citywide, unsupervised service. The launch-era $4.20 fare and operating hours are historical; Tesla now directs riders to its app for current availability, estimated fare, and wait time.
What Musk announced—and what happened on June 22
On June 11, 2025, Musk said the Austin service was tentatively scheduled to begin on June 22 and could be delayed because Tesla was “being super paranoid about safety,” according to the Associated Press. The date was a target at the time, not a confirmed launch.
Tesla did begin offering rides in Austin on June 22. Contemporary reporting described early-access invitations, a small Model Y fleet, and service restricted to a defined area of South Austin. A Tesla employee rode in the front passenger seat as a safety monitor, and remote monitoring was also reported. Those details describe the initial rollout, not every aspect of Tesla’s current service. TechCrunch’s launch-day coverage and the Associated Press report both described the limited launch.
Launch-era fare and hours
The Associated Press and TechCrunch reported a flat launch fare of $4.20 per ride. TechCrunch also reported launch information stating service would run from 6 a.m. to midnight, subject to weather-related limits. These were terms reported for the June 2025 launch; they should not be treated as current pricing or hours.

Where Tesla Robotaxi operates now
Tesla’s current Robotaxi Support page lists limited service areas in Austin, Dallas, and Houston, Texas, and Miami, Orlando, and Tampa, Florida. A city’s appearance on the list does not mean rides are available throughout that city. Tesla says the app displays the service boundary.
Tesla’s Cybercab FAQ says Model Y Robotaxi service is operating in the listed Texas and Florida cities, while Cybercab rides are available in limited areas of Austin. Vehicle type and availability therefore depend on the service area; do not assume every trip or city offers a Cybercab.

How to check availability and book a ride
- Open the Tesla Robotaxi app. Tesla says booking requires the app and a mobile device; riders must book for themselves.
- Choose a destination within the displayed service area. The app shows the boundary for available trips.
- Review the estimate before confirming. Tesla says the app provides an estimated fare and wait time. Hours vary by area, and pricing can change.
- Confirm the booking. During a trip, riders can contact support or request that the vehicle pull over.
For a current quote or operating schedule, use the app or Tesla’s support page rather than relying on launch-day figures.

The city also cautions that its documented incident reports are not validated, include only reports it receives, and may not capture every event. Austin points readers separately to NHTSA collision reporting. The city’s incident list should not be treated as a complete or verified safety dataset. The presence of a safety monitor during the initial launch is a reported operational detail, not proof by itself that the service was fully driverless in every operational sense or that its safety performance had been established.
