What happened to the Tesla interns in 2024?
On May 1, 2024, Bloomberg reported that Tesla was rescinding summer internship offers just weeks before the internships were scheduled to begin. The report said prospective interns turned to LinkedIn to appeal to other employers for opportunities. Bloomberg’s May 1 report is subscriber-only.
Futurism’s May 2 account described two students’ experiences. Miami University student Joshua Schreiber said he opened an email with flight information and then learned his offer had disappeared: “At 8:46am, I opened a Tesla email for flight info,” followed by, “By 11:25am, my internship offer was gone.” University of Texas at Austin student Brook Gura said she received a call rescinding her offer three weeks before her planned start date. These are accounts attributed to the students, not a complete record of all affected interns. Futurism’s account recounts their posts.
How many offers were rescinded?
The number is not established in the contemporaneous coverage. Futurism described the total as unknown, so the reported student examples should not be treated as a count of everyone affected.

Futurism also cited a 2022 Tesla report saying the company offered more than 3,000 internships to college students per year. That historical annual program figure is not the number of offers rescinded in 2024, and it should not be read as a current program size. Tesla’s 2022 impact report is the cited report; Futurism relayed the figure.
Were the cancellations caused by Tesla’s layoffs?
Fast Company’s May 8, 2024 report placed the internship offer rescissions in the context of Tesla’s layoffs. That timing provides context, but the coverage does not establish a comprehensive official reason from Tesla for every rescinded offer. It would be too strong to say the reports prove a specific cause in each student’s case. Fast Company’s report repeats the student examples alongside the layoff context.

What should a student do after an internship offer is rescinded?
The contemporaneous reports describe students seeking alternatives, including appeals to employers on LinkedIn. For anyone facing a similar disruption, the immediate priority is to clarify the change and protect practical arrangements while looking for another role.
- Get the decision in writing. Ask the recruiter or hiring contact to confirm that the offer has been rescinded, the effective date, and whether any alternative placement or later start date is available.
- Check expenses and commitments. Review any travel, housing, relocation, or other arrangements made in reliance on the offer. Ask the employer whether it will reimburse eligible costs; do not assume reimbursement is available.
- Contact your school. A career center, internship coordinator, or academic adviser may know of late openings and can help determine whether a replacement role will meet program or credit requirements.
- Apply selectively and quickly. When comparing alternatives, check role fit, location, start date, compensation, eligibility, and the employer’s application timeline. The 2024 reports did not assess particular job boards or employers.
- Update your network with a clear request. Explain that your scheduled internship was canceled and specify your skills, availability, location preferences, and the kinds of roles you can accept. Avoid presenting an individual account as proof of the total scale of the event.
What the 2024 reports do—and do not—say about Tesla now
These reports document an episode involving some summer offers in spring 2024. They do not establish whether Tesla currently rescinds internship offers, what its internship program looks like today, whether the program was terminated, or what openings are available now. A student considering an offer should rely on current, direct communication from the employer rather than treating this historical episode as a statement of present policy.
