Tesla’s latest reported quarter shows a split result: revenue climbed 26% year over year to $28.236 billion, while net income attributable to common stockholders slipped to $1.114 billion and operating income fell to $398 million. The company also reported higher AI-related research and development costs and forecast 2026 capital expenditures above $25 billion. Tesla released its Q2 results on July 22, 2026; as of October 5, Q3 results are scheduled for October 21 and have not yet been reported.
What did Tesla report in Q2 2026?
Tesla’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q reports results for the three months ended June 30, 2026, with comparisons to the same period in 2025. The financial statements are in millions of U.S. dollars unless otherwise stated.
| Measure | Q2 2026 | Q2 2025 | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $28.236 billion | $22.496 billion | Up $5.74 billion, or 26% |
| Net income attributable to common stockholders | $1.114 billion | $1.172 billion | Down $58 million |
| Income from operations | $398 million | $923 million | Down $525 million |
| Research and development expense | $2.371 billion | Not stated here as an absolute amount; Tesla reports a 49% year-over-year increase | Up 49% |
These are Tesla-reported figures, not independent estimates. They show why revenue growth alone does not answer whether profits improved: sales were higher, but both operating income and net income attributable to common stockholders were lower than a year earlier.
Did Tesla’s profits rise or fall?
They fell on the two profit measures shown above. Net income attributable to common stockholders decreased by $58 million, a modest decline relative to its prior-year level. Operating income dropped more sharply, from $923 million to $398 million. Operating income reflects the business’s income before non-operating items and taxes, so it helps distinguish performance from the final net-income figure.

The earnings statement places that operating-income decline alongside higher operating expenses. It is therefore possible for revenue to expand while operating profit contracts: a larger top line does not guarantee that the company keeps more from each dollar of sales.
How much is Tesla spending on AI?
Reported research and development expense
Tesla reported $2.371 billion in research and development expense for Q2 2026, 49% more than in Q2 2025. The company said the increase was primarily due to higher costs for AI and other programs and stock-based compensation. The filing does not break out a standalone dollar amount for AI spending, so the full R&D figure should not be treated as an AI-only budget.

Capital spending is a forecast, not a Q2 expense total
Tesla said it expected 2026 capital expenditures to exceed $25 billion. The company cited investment in AI compute infrastructure and data centers, production and R&D facilities, and its fleet of company-operated AI-enabled assets as drivers. This is management’s full-year outlook, not the amount already spent in Q2 or a realized full-year total.
What is Tesla’s AI strategy—and what do the figures establish?
In its Q2 2026 Form 10-Q, Tesla said it is focused on bringing AI into products and services including FSD (Supervised) and Robotaxi, while developing and commercializing AI robots including Optimus. It also said it is investing heavily in research and development to accelerate AI, software and fleet-based profits, adding that this investment will negatively affect profitability “during this phase.”

That language describes the company’s strategy and its view of current costs. The reported quarter confirms that R&D expense increased and operating income declined; it does not establish that FSD (Supervised), Robotaxi or Optimus has become a major source of profit, or that these programs will deliver future profits. Investors assessing the AI story should keep the company’s ambitions and spending plans separate from results already reported.
Why is Elon Musk part of the earnings-day conversation?
Tesla identifies Elon Musk as its CEO in the Q2 filing, and its July 22 results announcement said management would host a results and outlook Q&A webcast. Those materials establish Musk’s executive role, but they do not support attributing a specific forecast or earnings-call statement to him. The financial figures above are company-reported results, not a personal forecast by Musk.
