Tesla has ended Model S and Model X production, but the available information does not show that either car’s resale prices have risen because of it—or that collector demand has emerged. One 2026 report gives a dated asking-price reference for used Model S vehicles, not evidence of completed-sale gains or a forecast.
What happened to Model S and Model X production?
On Tesla’s January 28, 2026 earnings call, CEO Elon Musk said production would end in the following quarter. TechCrunch reported his explanation: “It’s time to basically bring the Model S and X programs to an end with an honorable discharge, because we’re really moving into a future that is based on autonomy.” (TechCrunch, January 28, 2026)
That announcement was not the same as the final production date. Car and Driver reported on May 12, 2026, that the last Model S and Model X had rolled off Tesla’s Fremont, California, production line. (Car and Driver, May 12, 2026)
The Model S launched in 2012 and the Model X in 2015, according to TechCrunch. Those dates mark their place in Tesla’s history, but age and historical significance alone do not establish scarcity or future appreciation. (TechCrunch, April 3, 2026)

Does discontinuation mean prices will rise?
No such rise is established by the available evidence. The cited sources do not provide a before-and-after series of Model S or Model X completed-sale prices, a measured discontinuation premium, or quantified evidence of collector demand. Ending new production may draw attention to a model, but it does not by itself show that fewer new cars have outweighed depreciation, changing technology, repair costs, or the supply of used cars offered by existing owners.
It also matters what “price” means. An asking price is what a seller requests; a completed sale records what a buyer paid. A trade-in offer and an auction result are different measures again. Without comparable transactions over time, a high listing cannot establish that the market has appreciated.

What does the available used-price reference tell you?
An Associated Press article contributed by Edmunds reported in September 2026 that used 2026 Model S pricing started around $110,000 at publication, and that used versions remained available after Tesla stopped selling new Model S sedans from its website. This is a dated U.S.-market asking-price reference—not an average, verified sale price, current quote, or prediction. (Associated Press, via Edmunds, September 2026)
It does not establish a comparable price trend for the Model X, nor does it show whether the Model S price changed because production ended. The two models have different body styles and buyer propositions; the available sources do not supply separate resale or collector-demand series for either one.

How to assess a specific Model S or Model X
For a purchase or sale, compare like with like rather than relying on the discontinued label. Check current local listings and completed transactions where available, and keep asking prices separate from sale prices. Useful comparison dimensions include:
- Model year and configuration or trim
- Mileage and condition
- Geography and the local market
- Ownership, battery, and repair history
- Software and feature entitlements attached to that vehicle
- Whether a comparable figure is a listing, trade-in offer, auction result, or completed sale
These are practical checks for comparing examples, not a measured ranking of what drives value. A model-specific transaction history is more informative than assuming discontinuation creates a premium.

What does discontinuation mean for support and software?
TechCrunch reported Musk’s statement that Tesla would support current Model S and Model X owners “for as long as people have the vehicles.” That is a broad statement of intent, not a specific warranty, service-level, or parts-supply guarantee. (TechCrunch, January 28, 2026)
Software entitlements also need vehicle-specific checking. Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) transfers page says its program for customers taking delivery of a new Tesla by March 31, 2026 is no longer available; a completed transfer stays with the receiving vehicle and cannot be reversed. Confirm current terms and the status of any feature directly with Tesla before treating it as part of a car’s value. (Tesla Support, Full Self-Driving (Supervised) Transfers)
Why sales data may not settle the question
TechCrunch reported in April 2026 that Tesla groups Model S and Model X with Cybertruck under “other models.” Because that category combines vehicles, it does not provide a clear S- or X-specific sales trend that could demonstrate growing scarcity or collector interest. (TechCrunch, April 3, 2026)
