What changed with Tesla’s FSD transfer offer?
Tesla’s U.S. support page states that the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) Transfer Program ended on March 31, 2026. Under the current terms, FSD cannot be transferred to another account or another Tesla vehicle. That means buyers should not count on moving an existing FSD entitlement to a replacement car under the ended program.
Tesla’s Q4 and FY 2025 investor update says the company began transitioning access to monthly-only subscriptions during Q1 2026. A secondary report named February 14, 2026, as the last day to buy FSD outright, but the reviewed Tesla sources do not confirm that specific date. The official materials do establish the current position: outright purchase is unavailable in the United States.
What does FSD (Supervised) cost now?
Tesla’s U.S. support page lists FSD (Supervised) at $99 USD per month, subject to terms and change. It lists a single price, not separate rates for HW3 and AI4 vehicles. Eligible owners can subscribe through the Tesla app or the vehicle touchscreen; an over-the-air software update may be needed.

- Existing outright-purchased FSD: Tesla says a used vehicle may retain FSD if its previous owner bought it outright and did not transfer it. If that owner subscribed instead, the new owner needs their own subscription.
Whether paying monthly makes financial sense depends on the owner’s actual alternatives and how long they expect to keep the vehicle. A break-even comparison would require the relevant purchase price or local offer, expected subscription duration, taxes, and any applicable terms; the current U.S. support page does not offer an outright-purchase price for comparison.
Are HW3 and AI4 subscription tiers confirmed?
No. Tesla has not announced separate HW3 and AI4 subscription tiers in the official sources reviewed. Its U.S. support page lists one $99-per-month price for FSD (Supervised). Notebookcheck’s October 5, 2026 update describes tiered pricing as an open possibility, including the idea of lower-priced supervised access on HW3 or higher-priced access for newer hardware or unsupervised service. Those are scenarios, not announced Tesla plans.

Tesla reported that monthly FSD subscriptions more than doubled in 2025 in its Q4 and FY 2025 investor update, published January 28, 2026. That is a company-reported growth figure; it does not establish that Tesla will introduce hardware-specific pricing or explain why the transfer program ended.
Does HW3 guarantee the same FSD features as AI4?
No universal hardware promise follows from the available information. Tesla’s New Zealand support page says its FSD package is available for HW3 and HW4 vehicles, while also qualifying feature availability by vehicle configuration, hardware, software version, region, model, trim, model year, and regulatory approval. It says rollout of a referenced feature will begin with HW4 and gives no confirmed timing for HW3. That is a New Zealand-specific statement and should not be treated as a U.S. rollout commitment or as proof that every HW3 and AI4 vehicle has identical features.

Before subscribing or changing vehicles, check the specific car’s available features and eligibility in the Tesla app or vehicle interface, and confirm the terms that apply in your region. Hardware generation alone does not settle regional availability or feature access.
What should Tesla owners check before switching cars?
- Identify how FSD is attached to the current vehicle. Check whether the vehicle has an outright-purchased entitlement or whether its access comes from a subscription. Tesla says these can have different outcomes after resale.
- Do not assume the old transfer offer applies. Tesla says the transfer program ended March 31, 2026, and current terms do not allow transfer to another account or vehicle.
- Confirm eligibility and features for the replacement car. Review its configuration and hardware alongside local software and regulatory availability; do not infer feature parity from the HW3 or AI4 label alone.
- Compare the actual costs over your ownership period. Use the applicable subscription terms, taxes, and any verified local offer rather than an unannounced tier or an assumed payback period.
FSD (Supervised) still requires driver attention
Tesla describes FSD (Supervised) as an advanced driver-assistance system intended for use only with a fully attentive driver and says it does not make a Tesla fully autonomous. The subscription is access to supervised driver assistance, not a replacement for the driver’s responsibility.
