The U.S. tech labor market is neither in a uniform collapse nor broadly recovered. As of August 16, 2026, the better description is frozen, selective, and uneven: overall job postings are near their pre-pandemic level, but software-development postings remain well below it, layoffs continue, and employers are concentrating hiring on narrower combinations of technical expertise, artificial intelligence, infrastructure, security, and business impact.
That combination is creating an especially difficult financial situation for experienced workers. A strong résumé may still lead to months of searching, lower compensation, a move from management to individual contribution, or a transition from permanent employment to contract work.

The market is hiring—but not moving normally
Indeed’s June 2026 labor-market snapshot put overall U.S. job postings at approximately 101.0, using February 1, 2020, as a baseline of 100. Postings were about 1.0% higher than the previous month but 3.7% lower year over year. The broad market was therefore close to its pre-pandemic posting level, not devoid of work.
Technology-specific demand looked weaker. Software-development postings were roughly 30% below the February 2020 baseline, while AI-related postings reached 5.9% of all Indeed postings—above their previous peak. The same data showed unemployment at 4.2% and approximately one job opening per unemployed worker, below the roughly 1.2 openings-per-worker level reported for 2019.

These figures describe a low-hire, low-fire market: employers are cautious about adding staff, workers are reluctant to leave jobs, and the number of available opportunities is not large enough to support easy movement between companies.
For a job seeker, stable aggregate postings can feel very different from a healthy market. A posting may be a backfill, a duplicate listing, an evergreen requisition, or a role that is later frozen. It may also attract applicants from across the country if it is remote. A national posting count is not the same thing as a realistic opportunity for a particular person in a particular city, salary range, specialty, or employment category.
Are tech layoffs still continuing?
Yes, but “tech layoffs” can describe several different things. A company may cut employees at a technology company while technology occupations continue to grow in hospitals, banks, manufacturers, government contractors, and other industries. Announced cuts are also different from actual separations, and neither measure is the same as net employment in a specific occupation.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Secondary reporting based on Challenger data said U.S. technology companies announced 38,242 cuts in May 2026, the sector’s heaviest monthly reduction in nearly two years, bringing the year-to-date total above 123,000. These are announced cuts, not a complete accounting of realized job losses. Some employees may remain on payroll during a notice period, transfer internally, leave through attrition, or find work elsewhere.
The figures nevertheless show that companies are still reallocating labor after the pandemic-era hiring surge. A business can eliminate positions in a mature product line while hiring for cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, data centers, or an AI platform. Layoffs and hiring can therefore occur at the same company—or even within the same department—without contradicting each other.
Why layoffs and selective hiring coexist
Employers are prioritizing work that is easier to connect to revenue, cost reduction, risk management, or strategic infrastructure. Relatively stronger areas include:
- Cybersecurity, security engineering, governance, risk, and compliance.
- Cloud infrastructure, platform engineering, site reliability, and production operations.
- Data engineering and machine-learning infrastructure.
- Networking, data-center construction, installation, and maintenance.
- Enterprise-systems modernization and migration.
- Technology roles serving regulated industries.
- Specialized hardware, semiconductor, energy, and industrial technology.
- Technical sales and implementation roles with direct customer responsibility.
Indeed reported that senior-level postings rose almost 15% between May 2025 and May 2026, with growth concentrated in technology, engineering, and other professional services. That is a positive signal, but it does not mean every experienced candidate is finding work quickly. Rising postings do not show how many applicants compete for each role, whether jobs are filled, what they pay, or whether one senior hire replaces several eliminated positions.

Robert Half’s 2026 technology research, citing Bureau of Labor Statistics measures, identified low unemployment rates in selected occupations including network and systems administration, information security analysis, software development, and systems management. Such occupation-level figures are broad indicators. They can conceal differences by location, seniority, work authorization, compensation, specialization, and employer type.
Why experienced workers can still struggle
Experience is not the same as current market fit
Employers are increasingly asking for combinations rather than isolated skills: cloud infrastructure plus cost optimization; software development plus AI-assisted workflows; security plus compliance; data engineering plus production machine learning; or product management plus measurable revenue ownership.
A person with 15 years of experience may be screened out if the résumé does not show recent work in the employer’s preferred stack, industry, or business model. Total years can also work against a candidate when the company wants a narrower role, a lower compensation level, or someone comfortable with a smaller scope.
There may be fewer management layers
Organizations that flattened during restructuring may be hiring fewer directors, managers, senior program leaders, and staff-plus employees than they did during expansion. A laid-off manager can end up competing for individual-contributor roles while appearing overqualified for midlevel positions.

Experienced workers often have higher prior salaries, equity expectations, benefit needs, or location requirements. Employers may choose a less expensive candidate who can perform much of the same work with modern tools or offshore support. Remote-only candidates also compete with a national or international applicant pool, while hybrid and on-site candidates may have access to more openings.
A candidate can be statistically “in demand” and still struggle because of salary, work authorization, relocation limits, a lack of a degree, or a specialization that is concentrated in only a few cities.
Hiring systems create additional friction
Automated résumé screening and keyword-heavy job descriptions can reject candidates whose experience is transferable but not phrased in the employer’s preferred vocabulary. Long interview loops may end with an internal hire, a delayed approval, or a budget freeze. Repeated rejection is therefore not always a precise measure of a candidate’s ability, but it is a signal that the current positioning, target market, or search assumptions may need to change.

Age bias is possible, but not an explanation for every rejection
Older workers may encounter assumptions about compensation, adaptability, proximity to retirement, cultural fit, or willingness to report to a younger manager. Those concerns should not be presented as proof that age explains every unsuccessful search. Candidates should separate documented discrimination from plausible explanations such as title compression, skills recency, industry concentration, and salary expectations. In the United States, workers should not be advised to falsify dates, credentials, or employment history.
What artificial intelligence is changing
There is not enough evidence to conclude that AI has already replaced most technology workers. Its effects are occurring through several channels:
- Direct substitution: Some repetitive coding, documentation, testing, support, and analysis can be automated.
- Productivity leverage: Existing teams may deliver more work without proportional hiring.
- Reorganization: Companies may cut roles while rebuilding workflows around AI-enabled systems.
- Higher skill thresholds: Employers may expect candidates to use AI tools productively, safely, and with human review.
- Investment shifts: Spending may move from discretionary application projects toward AI infrastructure, data centers, security, and data quality.
- Reduced entry-level hiring: Firms may hire fewer juniors if routine tasks that once provided training opportunities can be automated.
Indeed’s April 2026 snapshot reported that the information-sector layoff rate had doubled over the prior year to 2.4%, identifying AI as one contributing factor. That source does not establish that AI alone caused those layoffs. Over-hiring, weaker demand, restructuring, outsourcing, acquisitions, interest rates, and shareholder pressure can overlap with AI investment.
A 2026 U.S. Census working paper found changes in early-career hiring in occupations more exposed to AI, while reporting that hiring rates had largely recovered by early 2025 after a smaller employment base. The finding is emerging research, not a final verdict that AI either destroyed or created a particular number of jobs.
For experienced workers, “AI-ready” usually means more than completing a prompt-engineering course. It can mean using coding assistants with review, automating testing or internal workflows, evaluating model reliability, protecting data, integrating AI into an existing business process, or measuring accuracy, cost, latency, productivity, and risk. A shipped project or credible work sample is generally stronger evidence than a list of generic certificates.

Which technology roles look healthier?
The following is a relative market map, not a guarantee of employment:
| Relatively stronger signals | More exposed or competitive areas |
|---|---|
| Cybersecurity and security governance | Generic software development |
| Cloud, platform, and reliability engineering | Entry-level coding roles |
| AI and machine-learning infrastructure | Routine QA and repetitive implementation |
| Data engineering and production systems | Some generalist product roles |
| Data-center and networking operations | Remote-only roles with broad applicant pools |
| Regulated-industry technology | Projects dependent on discretionary spending |
| Systems modernization | Some middle-management layers |
A role’s outlook depends on more than its title. Compare postings with actual employment growth, layoff rates, wages, time-to-fill, applicant competition, geography, and whether openings represent new headcount or replacement hiring.

- High-Resilience Molded Foam Seat – Won’t Flatten After 1 Year – Instead of budget foam that hardens and sags within months, the seat is built with high-density, high-resilience molded foam that bounces back day after day. It maintains its shape and cushioning far longer, preventing the “bottoming out” discomfort common at this price point
- Adjustable Lumbar, Not a Fixed Afterthought – Unlike flimsy plastic supports that crack or lose tension, this chair features a durable lumbar mechanism that adjusts depth to match your spine’s natural curve. Genuinely relieves lower back pressure during long sitting sessions
- Breathable Mesh Backrest – No Peeling, No Heat Buildup – Say goodbye to flaking faux leather. The high-tension mesh back promotes continuous airflow, keeping you cool in warm environments and eliminating the mess of peeling upholstery. Mesh holds up significantly better over time and looks professional years later
- Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
- Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching
What this means for personal finances
A long search changes the financial problem from “How do I get the perfect job?” to “How do I preserve flexibility while improving my odds?” Job seekers should calculate a realistic runway using liquid savings, severance, unemployment benefits, health-insurance costs, debt payments, taxes, and the time needed to replace benefits or equity.
It is useful to run two searches in parallel:
- Same-level search: The preferred title, industry, pay range, location, and employment type.
- Bridge-role search: A role, contract, consulting engagement, implementation position, or adjacent industry that protects cash flow and may lead to a later move.
Keeping these searches separate prevents a common mistake: treating a bridge role as a permanent surrender of career level, or rejecting viable income because it does not match the previous title immediately.

A rational search strategy for experienced candidates
- Choose a specific problem to solve. Target outcomes such as reducing cloud costs, improving reliability, meeting compliance requirements, modernizing an enterprise system, or deploying an AI workflow safely.
- Rewrite around evidence. Emphasize scale, revenue, cost savings, uptime, delivery speed, risk reduction, users, and production results rather than a long inventory of technologies.
- Show current fluency. Add recent tools and methods only when they support the target role. Do not pretend to be junior or claim expertise you cannot demonstrate.
- Create one or two relevant work samples. An AI-assisted automation, architecture example, security assessment, or modernization plan should be tied to a realistic business context.
- Search beyond technology companies. Banks, manufacturers, health systems, public agencies, utilities, and regulated businesses may need durable technical capabilities even when venture-backed firms are cutting staff.
- Expand selectively. Consider hybrid, on-site, contract-to-hire, consulting, implementation, and customer-facing technical roles where financially and personally feasible.
- Use targeted outreach. Referrals, former colleagues, specialist recruiters, and direct contact with hiring managers can be more useful than indiscriminate application volume.
- Track conversion rates. Measure applications to screens, screens to interviews, interviews to final rounds, and final rounds to offers. Zero screens suggests a positioning or targeting issue; late-stage losses suggest interview, compensation, or internal-approval issues.
Certifications can help when a target employer actually requests them and the candidate can connect the credential to practical work. They are unlikely to solve a role-fit problem by themselves. The same caution applies to paid résumé services, job-board subscriptions, and interview tools: use them to remove a specific bottleneck, not simply to create more activity.
What employers risk by filtering too narrowly
Companies may save near-term payroll by reducing headcount, but overly narrow hiring can create longer-term costs. Keyword filters can exclude people with transferable experience. Repeated layoffs can remove institutional knowledge. Hiring one person with a fashionable keyword set may be less valuable than hiring someone who understands production systems, customers, compliance, and the consequences of failure.
The most useful hiring process distinguishes between skills that must be current on day one and skills that a strong experienced employee can learn. It also measures whether a role is genuinely funded and approved before asking candidates to complete a lengthy interview process.
How to read the next market headline
Ask five questions before drawing a conclusion:
- Does the number describe announced cuts, actual separations, postings, hires, or net employment?
- Is it about technology companies, technology occupations, or the information sector?
- What seniority, geography, work arrangement, and specialty does it cover?
- Does it measure new jobs or replacement hiring?
- Does it show applicant competition, pay, and completed hires—or only employer intent?
This distinction matters because a rising posting count can coexist with longer searches if applicant supply rises faster. Similarly, a large layoff announcement can coexist with growth in a specialized occupation elsewhere.
