Start with small, real decisions and build from there: preschoolers can count and sort, school-age children can practice saving toward a goal, and teens can compare costs and manage increasingly real financial choices. These are flexible stages, not deadlines. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) groups development into ages 3–5, 6–12, and 13–21, while recognizing that children mature at different rates and have different chances to make money decisions.

This guide is U.S.-oriented. Use the activities that fit your child’s age, experience, and family circumstances; no particular allowance or account is required.

What should kids learn about money at each age?

Children learn money skills through both explanation and observation. The aim is to move from concrete ideas to supported practice, then to more independent decisions as a child is ready. The CFPB describes three broad stages in its financial capability building blocks. Treat them as guideposts rather than a checklist: readiness and opportunity vary from child to child.

Ages 3–5: make money visible and concrete

Young children can begin with counting, sorting, and simple ideas about money and trading. They do not need to manage a budget; they need chances to connect money with everyday choices and to begin noticing that using or keeping resources involves decisions. The CFPB’s guidance on financial knowledge and decision-making and financial habits and norms places these foundations in early childhood.

Stories can open a conversation without making it feel like a lesson. The CFPB’s Money as You Grow Bookshelf lists books by suggested age and key idea. For example, Alexander, Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday by Judith Viorst is listed for ages 4+ and explores prioritizing and saving. A library may have it available at no cost.

Ages 6–12: practice goals, choices, and routines

Middle childhood is a useful time to turn money words into habits. Help a child choose a savings goal, decide how much to set aside, and track progress. Talk through the trade-off between spending now and saving for later, and invite the child to consider whether a purchase is a want or a need. These activities support planning and choices that reflect priorities, capabilities highlighted in the CFPB’s financial habits and norms guidance.

Make a savings goal manageable

Choose a goal the child understands, then break it into steps: how much it costs, what money might be saved, and how to keep track. An allowance or a small earning opportunity can provide practice, but neither is essential; the learning comes from making choices and seeing their consequences.

The CFPB’s School-age children and saving page offers optional ideas such as encouraging a child to save 10 percent of money received, making occasional deposits together, or matching some savings. These are activity suggestions, not a required savings rate or a universal formula. The page also offers this conversation starter: “Lots of people put money in a savings account to protect it and receive interest on their saving.”

Use ordinary errands as practice

Invite children to compare prices on a grocery trip, help plan within a spending limit, or talk about bills and larger purchases in age-appropriate terms. A visit to a bank or credit union can make saving more tangible. The FDIC’s Teaching Young People About Money recommends involving young people in conversations about work and income, bills, purchases, and budgeting, along with using books and games.

Ages 13–21: connect money concepts to real decisions

As teens and young adults begin earning, buying independently, managing an account, or considering education borrowing, connect lessons to the choices they actually face. The CFPB identifies comparing product features and costs, setting goals, resisting peer pressure, and managing credit and debt as relevant capabilities for adolescence and young adulthood. Its resources on financial knowledge and decision-making and financial habits and norms can help frame those conversations.

  • Compare the total cost and features of products or services rather than focusing only on an advertised price.
  • Discuss the differences between debit and credit and what borrowing means before a young person takes on debt.
  • Look at persuasive advertising, “special offers,” unsolicited inquiries, and possible scams with a skeptical eye.
  • Talk through goals and peer pressure without assuming every teen has an income, bank account, or the same financial responsibilities.

The FDIC also recommends teaching young people to watch for scams and rip-offs. Make it practical: ask what an offer promises, what it costs, and whether the source can be trusted before sharing information or agreeing to anything.

How do I teach my child about money in everyday life?

Children learn by watching as well as by being taught. The FDIC recommends age-appropriate conversations about work, income, bills, and major purchases, and suggests involving children in budgeted shopping trips, savings activities, books, and games. Instead of presenting a decision as a rule with no context, briefly explain your thinking: why you compare prices, save for a purchase, or choose one expense over another.

How do I choose an activity or book?

Choose something the child can actively take part in, and match it to the skill you want to practice: earning, spending, saving, prioritizing, or borrowing. Consider the child’s age and readiness, as well as what fits your family’s circumstances. The CFPB bookshelf’s suggested ages and key-idea labels can help you choose a story that gives you a natural opening for discussion.
