Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl set major first-week records after its October 3, 2025 release. In the United States, it earned 4.002 million album-equivalent units for the October 3–9 tracking week and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 dated October 18. It also sold 3,479,500 albums through traditional formats and digital downloads. Those are different measures: the larger total includes streaming-equivalent albums.
What record did The Life of a Showgirl set in the United States?
For the U.S. tracking week of October 3–9, 2025, The Life of a Showgirl earned 4.002 million album-equivalent units, according to Luminate figures reported by Guinness World Records and the Associated Press. Guinness calls it the fastest-selling U.S. album and the largest first-week total in the Luminate tracking era, which began in 1991.
That 4.002 million figure is not a count of copies purchased. Album-equivalent units combine traditional album sales with streaming-equivalent albums. For this week, the total included 3,479,500 traditional U.S. sales and 522,600 streaming-equivalent albums, corresponding to 680.9 million on-demand official streams.
Did Taylor Swift beat Adele’s first-week sales record?
Yes, by both measures cited by Guinness, but the distinction between them matters. Adele’s 25 had held the respective records with 3.482 million U.S. equivalent units and 3.378 million traditional U.S. sales. The Life of a Showgirl exceeded each comparator, according to Guinness’s equivalent-unit record entry and its traditional-sales record entry.

- Taylor Swift's 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, will be released worldwide October 3, 2025
Traditional sales count purchases across formats including CDs, vinyl, cassettes and digital downloads; they are not a physical-copy-only total. The 3,479,500 traditional sales therefore should not be described as vinyl sales or as total copies including streams.
How did the album perform in the UK and worldwide?
United Kingdom
The UK’s Official Charts reported 423,000 combined chart units in the opening week, the biggest UK album week since Ed Sheeran’s Divide recorded 672,000 in 2017. The total included 126,000 vinyl sales and 84,000 streaming-equivalent sales. These are UK chart measures and should not be directly added to or compared as if they used the same system as U.S. album-equivalent units. Official Charts also quoted its chief executive, Martin Talbot, calling it the biggest first week of Swift’s UK career.

Worldwide claim
Republic Records announced more than 5.5 million global album-equivalent units and more than 1.5 billion global streams for the first week. Those worldwide figures are the label’s announcement, not an independently stated Guinness or national chart total; see Republic Records’ release via PR Newswire.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What do the vinyl numbers mean?
For the UK opening week, Official Charts counted 126,000 vinyl sales. A separate later figure measures a different period and geography: Luminate reported that Swift sold 1.6 million U.S. vinyl copies during all of 2025, as reported by Axios in 2026. That is a full-year U.S. figure, not the first-week vinyl total. The U.S. first-week figure of 3,479,500 covers traditional sales in multiple formats, so it cannot be used to infer first-week vinyl copies.
