It does show why the claims should not be treated as interchangeable: likes measure engagement with posts, a follower total is a dated snapshot, and follower growth is the change between two snapshots.
What can be verified about Instagram in 2023
Comscore documented a February 2023 milestone for Selena Gomez and Kylie Jenner: Gomez was a little over 42,000 followers ahead of Jenner on February 23, then gained nearly one million followers the following day. Those figures describe a short interval, not an annual growth ranking. Comscore’s account also compares the pair’s most-liked posts in its analysis: Gomez’s had 19.2 million likes and Jenner’s had 12.4 million. These are post-like counts for those accounts and that comparison, not proof that Swift was Instagram’s most-liked celebrity.

A separate January 2024 report attributed 2023 Instagram gains of 5.33 million followers for Shohei Ohtani and more than three million for Travis Kelce to Sportico data. The figures appear in a secondary report and concern athletes; they do not establish that Ohtani and Kelce are the two people intended by the title’s comparison. Taylor Alert’s report is the available source for that attribution.
Likes, follower totals and follower growth are different measures
- Likes count reactions to a particular post. They do not show how many followers an account added over a year.
- Follower total is the account’s audience at a particular moment. It is not the number gained during a period.
- Follower growth requires comparable counts at the start and end of a stated interval, measured for the same accounts using the same method.
For example, Gomez’s lead over Jenner on February 23 and her gain the next day cannot be used to rank either account’s full-year growth. Likewise, the millions of likes on their compared posts cannot establish annual follower gains.

Why an annual ranking needs clear dates and a defined cohort
A defensible claim about who gained the most followers in 2023 needs a named account group and start and end dates. It should also clarify whether growth means net followers added, percentage growth, or another measure. A list of the most-followed accounts at year-end answers a different question from a ranking of accounts that gained the most during the year.
Snapshot counts also have measurement limits. Meltwater’s Digital 2023 Global Overview says its Instagram account figures are based on data published by Instagram, rounded to the nearest 100,000, and liable to change. Those rounded snapshots are useful for broad context, but they should not be treated as exact counts or as a substitute for consistently dated start-and-end measurements.

What the available evidence cannot establish about Swift
The sources available here do not define “The Most Liked” or provide a verified ranking showing Taylor Swift as the most-liked celebrity on Instagram. Nor do they establish which two celebrities the title’s follower-growth comparison meant. A separate South China Morning Post result concerns the most-followed celebrities in 2023, not necessarily those who gained the most followers during that year; the page could not be accessed to verify further details.
Without the original ranking or dataset, naming a pair as the answer would be speculation. The verified figures offer useful examples of how Instagram metrics differ, but they do not settle the title’s specific comparison.
