What did Taylor Swift buy?
Swift’s May 30, 2025, letter said that the masters for her first six albums now belong to her, along with the related visual and unreleased materials she named. The albums are Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989 and Reputation. Her announcement describes the assets she acquired; without the purchase contract, the complete legal scope of the transfer cannot be confirmed. Swift’s official site published her letter.

A master recording is the original sound recording used to make copies and distribute a song. Ownership can affect who may license or authorize uses of that recording in films, commercials and other media. It is distinct from songwriting and publishing rights, which are separate rights and are not addressed by the master-recording announcement. The Washington Post explains the distinction and the licensing implications.
Who owned the masters before the sale?
The ownership path began with Swift’s 2005 record deal, when she was 15. Her original masters stayed with Big Machine, the label she signed with. In 2019, Scooter Braun’s Ithaca Holdings acquired Big Machine and its rights to those recordings. Braun sold the recordings to Shamrock Capital in 2020; Swift said she bought them from Shamrock in 2025. The Guardian’s account of the timeline was corrected on June 3, 2025, to clarify that Swift had not previously owned the original masters.

- Taylor Swift's 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, will be released worldwide October 3, 2025
That distinction matters: “bought back” is the familiar shorthand for Swift’s purchase, but “purchased for the first time” is more precise about her ownership of the original recordings. The Washington Post reported that Ithaca’s 2019 Big Machine purchase was valued at $300 million; that figure refers to the label acquisition, not the price Swift paid in 2025. The Washington Post reported the 2019 figure.
What happened between Swift and Scooter Braun?
The dispute became public after Braun’s company acquired Big Machine and its catalog. In 2020, Swift said she had not been offered the chance to buy her masters from Braun unless she signed a nondisclosure agreement that she said restricted negative comments. Braun later disputed aspects of her account. The accounts differ, and the available reporting does not settle that disagreement as an established fact. The Washington Post summarizes the competing accounts.

- The 1989 album changed my life in countless ways, and it fills me with such excitement to announce that my version of it will be out October 27th
When Shamrock later owned the recordings, Swift said she contacted the company and ultimately completed the purchase. Shamrock said it was “thrilled with this outcome and are so happy for Taylor,” according to the Associated Press. Braun also said, “I am happy for her.” The Associated Press reported both statements.
How Taylor’s Version fits into the buyback
Before buying the originals, Swift rerecorded four albums and released them as Taylor’s Version: Fearless, Red, Speak Now and 1989. A rerecording is a new sound recording, not a transfer of ownership in the original master. Swift said the rerecordings and the success of the Eras Tour, along with fan support, helped make the purchase possible. The Guardian identifies the four released rerecordings.

- Taylor Swift has announced her ninth studio album, evermore; folklore's sister record
In her May 2025 letter, Swift said the debut album had been completely rerecorded, while she had recorded less than a quarter of Reputation. She said both projects could re-emerge in the future, but did not announce release dates or commit to releasing either one. These remarks describe the status she gave at the time, not a current release schedule. Read Swift’s letter on her official site.
What was the purchase price?
Swift did not disclose the 2025 sale price. The Washington Post reported that a source close to negotiations called a rumored $600 million-to-$1 billion range “highly inaccurate”; it also cited a Variety report that the price was closer to Shamrock’s original $300 million purchase price. Neither report establishes the final amount Swift paid. The Washington Post reported the competing claims.

What does owning the originals mean for Taylor’s Version?
The purchase gives Swift ownership of the original masters described in her announcement, while the four Taylor’s Version releases remain new recordings with their own masters. The rerecordings therefore do not become unnecessary or disappear because she bought the originals; they are distinct recordings. Which version a listener prefers is a matter of taste, while the ownership and licensing implications depend on which recording is used.
